I love that Santa Ono is a wartime consigliere
because it seems like it's time to go to the mattresses.

Per usual, the University of Michigan is leading the world.
It's demonstrating not to rush to judgement (and be mindful of what you can / can not say).
The next generation needs to learn instant information access and rushing to judgment sometimes leads to peril. It's the lemming condition. Everyone over the cliff.
As time passes, the strategy to victory reveals itself.
Santa has demonstrated mindful leadership for the athletic department.
Go Blue.

I wonder how Tony "petty" Pettiti slept last night?

I'm curious what Santa's personal relationship is with the other Big10 university presidents. They all have much more in common than differences, including 99% common interests (e.g., advocating for govt research and medical center funding, visa policies etc.).

I'm curious about this as well. Just as one example, Illinois and Northwestern are part of a consortium trying to secure a national semiconductor research center in Illinois. Does Chancellor Robert Jones at Illinois really want to spend valuable time going after Jim Harbaugh just because of Bret Beilema's tender feelings?
I can understand Ohio and State acting as they do. But other school presidents in the conference?
I probably don't have to say that major research universities are complex and yet highly hierarchical organizations. I think that is an underlying point of Ono's letter to the conference and his peers: "do you really want your underlings to write a check that your ass will have to cash?"

Nice example Romulan. It's incredible that this has gotten to the university president level in a public way. That alone is a massive failure on Petitti's part. His job is to be the public "bad guy" for what the universities want behind the scenes, like Goodell and NFL owners.

Go to the “mattress”? What is he going to do, sleep with them? Interesting thought. But he’s not that hot.
I think he should go to the “mat,” like a wrestling mat, and grapple with them. That might work better.

From Mario Puzo's gangster novel The Godfather(1969). Those involved in such a conflict might be expected to stay in hideouts where they would sleep on mattresses rather than in beds.
This was also mentioned on the Sopranos when Tony went to war with Phil Leotardo’s crew.

Consigliere is an advisor. Ono is the capo dei capi aka boss of bosses.
When Michael says he needs a wartime consigliere he is as more talking about Tom’s ethnicity than his ruthlessness. Remember Tom is the one who had the horse head put into the film producer’s bed.
In war family is the only sure thing these people could count on. Tom wasn’t Italian so he couldn’t be fully trusted in war.
The Mafia was is an intensely ethnic organization. Only people of “pure” Italian or Sicilian descent could be a member. The rest could only be associates. Neither me or my dad could be made men because we are not 100% Italian.
This part of The Godfather is overlooked.

Michael wanted a Sicilian. Not just an Italian. As he explained to Kay at the wedding.

Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!

No, he's not a wartime consigliare. He's a wartime Don.

He's in charge, so not really a consigliere, right? He's the boss
Edit: ok a bunch of people already said this now that I look through the board lol
