How bad will football attendance be in 2021?

That’s what will dictate whether Harbaugh stays.

Living about 3.5 hours away it’s getting harder to justify all the time in the car, so many tv timeouts and sitting there, weekend gone for the event.
I imagine I’ll still end up at a game since it’s a tradition my dad and I’ve had since Rich Rods first year. This year the streak broke but I still drove up to watch on the tv with my dad. If I didn’t have that at this point I’d probably let the streak end.

My family had season tickets from 1956 until Hoke's last year.  I gave them up because it was just unwatchable.  And here we are 6 years later and just as unwatchable if not worse.

Just sad how far this program has fallen

I would imagine there will be empty seats next year if Harbaugh stays.  Guaranteed the student section will be half full or less next year if JH returns.

If Campbell is hired which should happen, then there might be some optimism to keep the stadium full

Well assuming we have completed our strategy of infecting half the population with COVID and then vaccinating most of who remains by August we should be good to go for full attendance by the season opener. People will be looking to get out so attendance will be strong. The loss of some of our more senior season ticket holders will also allow for better seats for many.

I’m genuinely curious to hear from someone who has had season tickets for a long time that intends to renew next year. Is there a football-related reason, or is it just tradition with friends/family that you want to maintain? I can’t imagine the football is enough of a pull especially at current prices, but if someone can make that case I’d love to hear it.

20 year season ticket holder but been going to games since my first year in the Michigan Marching Band which was 1995.  I let my payment for this year's season tickets roll over to next year's, so at this point I have no choice but to renew.  But this may be it for me.  I am sentimentally attached to my seats but so many things have made the game day experience more trouble than it's worth lately.  Cost, covid, and Ann Arbor making some streets two-way that used to be one way which will directly impact our usual escape plan from the city will all play into the decision for me.  Plus, the team just not getting any better doesn't help.

At this point in my life, I go for the family experience.  Everyone is always busy and the home games give us an event to plan for.  Since 2008, I don’t get deeply attached to wins and losses.  I think of it as time with my family and money I give to the university that helped me grow up and have some limited success in life.  Maybe that money helps student athletes achieve something they could not have otherwise.

The kids start graduating high school in 2022.  Depending on where they move for school, we may dump the tickets in 2023.  Retirement likely in 2024 and we will switch over the spending to visit the kids wherever they live and hopefully travel.

If season tickets was based on the quality of the product and wins and losses, I would not keep purchasing but my rationale is planned family time.  We could certainly try to plan something else as a family but I suspect we would get busy with other things and miss out on the time together.

I have had tickets since 1984. I would never give them up for any reason, because I love college football in general and Michigan football in particular. I miss a home game, only if there is a death in the family, my own. I travel to most road games as well. I have seen more road wins under JH than in the previous 10 years combined. I don’t get all the hysteria about one bad year. It is a pretend, contrived BS season and it sucks. The team was hurt by opt outs and injuries. JH knows more football than Fickell and Campbell combined. Until this season JH has held his own against every team in the BTN except OSU. Nobody else has beaten them either on s consistent basis. We have lacked a young stud QB and if Cade is not the guy, maybe JJ will be. Those of you who have given up on Michigan can feel free to leave and don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out. Don’t come back when things are better either.

I was with you until the “bad luck COVID year” excuse. It’s garbage. Look at the product in the field!  The missed assignments (not just by freshman), the extremely poor tackling, that Harbaugh chased off the one definitely good QB on the roster (we didn’t know McNamara would be any good), the fact that we only had one good QB on the roster(!), the defense giving up 256 yards rushing to penn state, losing to this pathetic Michigan state team, cornerbacks that are unable to keep up with receivers, and just generally looking uninspired. There is no fire in this team. He has to go.

I remember seeing posts about people not renewing their tickets during the RR and Hoke eras. I thought, how could you ever even think about doing that. You should be lucky you have them. Fast forward 6 years and I’m not even sure I want to spend 4 hours watching them on TV. Forget loyalty and that Harbaugh and Warde are friends. At some point you have to look at this from a financial standpoint point. Attendance will suffer going forward with Harbaugh as coach. The athletic department depends on football revenue and we are a deflated ballon right now. Take some advice from the lions.....

i think ppl will still go to the game, especially if ppl are allowed to go back.

ppl miss this, the spectacle, the comradery...

now, that isn't to say that attendance wouldn't go down during the year, but i think initially, people will just be excited to be in the Big House again.

After that it depends on how the team performs on the field.

Gave up our season tickets this fall after almost 30 years. The tailgate wasn’t as much fun and the price kept going up up up. Six other families in our group also gave their tickets up. If we want to go to a game we’ll pick up what we need. Last year you couldn’t give tickets away free for the less than marquee games, just not worth it any more. I think there may be a big surge in attendance once games can be attended, but then it will fall back to Hoke levels. Been there, done that.
