UofM is the 9th easiest school to recruit for. To me, that means if your recruiting classes are ~1-6, you exceeded expectations. If the class is ~7-11 you met expectations. Anything higher than a 15 is not good. Hoke's classes (per Scout):
- 2011: 29; 19 recruits (BH hired in January, 2011)
- 2012: 4; 22 recruits
- 2013: 2; 27 recruits
- 2014: 27; 16 recruits
- 2015: 35; (shared results with JH)
Here's what it looked like under RR:
- 2008: 6; 25 recruits (RR hired in January 2008
- 2009: 14; 22 recruits
- 2010: 11; 27 recruits
- 2011: 29; 19 recruits (RR fired in early 2011)
I think one has to also consider that RR was met with a lot of negativity when he arrived and had to deal with a lack of support while BH was welcomed with open arms. I'm sure that also had an effect on their ability to recruit. When the tide changed during BH's tenure, so did his recruiting results(see 2014 and 2015).

Yeah I agree with you 100%. If you look at the average of Carr's last four classes, the average of RR's classes, and the average of Hoke's classes, they all average out to about #10 in the country. When we look back at Harbaugh's classes, they will also probably average out to #10.
Point is, Michigan sells itself in a lot of ways. If Hoke was truly an elite recruiter his classes at Ball State and San Diego State would have been ranked much higher than they were. Here are the rankings of his classes at BSU and SDSU:
20013 - #112
2004 - #98
2005 - #100
2006 - #86
2007 - #92
2008 - #104
2009 - #96
2010 - #74
Compare Hoke's recruiting at BSU and SDSU to PJ Fleck at Western Michigan for example. I consider him an elite recruiter since his classes at WMU are bettter than several Power 5 teams' classes. Here are the rankings of Fleck's classes at WMU:
2013 - #112
2014 - #71
2015 - #76
2016 - #55
His 2014, 2015 and 2016 classes were/are ranked #1 in the MAC. Hoke has never reeled in the conference's best class. He came closest in 2010 finishing 2nd in the Mountain West. (He also finised 2nd twice at Michigan).

I have a hard time with recruiting rankings for lower level D1 programs. Once you get by the four and five stars, there's not much difference between recruits. The elite is easy, but after that it gets a lot more even as far as talent. Plus those lower guys aren't covered as much due to their lower rankings and less times at camps.

...an OP on MGoBlog very recently that discussed these ratings. I remember Georgia was #1 while ND, Alabama, and Ohio State were in the top 10. It included factors such as how good the high school football players were in that state, what in-state schools competed for them etc. No deep-thinking, but it seemed logical.

with those of you with similar sentiments. Just like alot of us, I suspect Hoke has learned alot from his UM experience and failures, and will be a better coach and person for it. I do think he belongs somewhere as a DC vs. a HC - seems to me a better fit for him to restart his career. Is there really anyone out there that would deny that he at least deserves a second chance somewhere, especially as a guy who loved/loves Michigan - including you, Olaf? Come on, let's save this kind of disdain for the OSU's and ND's of the world.

I hope Hoke gets a DC job. I want to see what his defense would look like. He'd develop a hell of a DL.

With a new QB starting next year, the Oregon 1st string offense needs to build confidence during practice, and Hoke's defenses will definitely provide that.
As for in-game coaching, Oregon plans to station Hoke in the press box, and Hoke will not wear a headset.

1. Read John U Bacon's latest book "Endzone" - you'll see Brady Hoke is really a decent person.
2. I was lucky enough to hear Greg Harden speak recently. He is the person responsbile for dealing with a lot of the sports psychology issues for the Athletic Department. When asked about the whole situation in the past he had an excellent comment: "If you claim Brady Hoke is a bad person, we'll have to fight."
His coaching tenure didn't turn out well but as definitely a "good guy" member of the Michigan football community he deserves our support.

than a decent mid-major for his next job.
Hoke is not without his qualities as a coach but he is extremely limited and most P5 schools at least fancy themselves to be able to aim higher.
