The hits keep coming: Boise St passes Michigan in all time Win %

Submitted by Ezekiels Creatures on September 22nd, 2019 at 5:19 PM

With Michigan's loss yesterday and Boise St's win, Boise St is now the all time leader in win percentage in college football history:

Boise St's football program began in 1933.

Yup. I don't know why anybody should give one shit about all time winning percentage or all time total wins. The teams of the past don't win you games on Saturday. Bo Schembechler and Field Yost don't win you games on Saturday. Live in the present and focus on the current state of the program. The rest is bullshit.

If you think that the program's history is more important than the present then you should stop watching and just read history books. History is nice trivia, but you can't shape your future around it.

The ironic thing about Michigan football is that for 50 years its been constantly talked about and shaped around Bo, the man whose words were "No man is more important than the team."

also literally everyone has sepia tinged memories of the Bo glory years that do not in any way comport with reading the history books.

like in Bo's entire tenure he never had a 1 loss season wherein more than three Big Ten teams won 6 conference games. He never coached a team to a top 5 ranking when competing against more than 4 conference teams with winning records overall. This is not meant to be a pro-Harbaugh sentiment, but you could probably compile an amazingly disappointing statline on Bo's record vs ranked teams.

Untrue...Alabama fans care about tradition and history, as do Ohio State fans.  Some people are sour so the narrative for them is "I live in the present, who cares about those stats?"  Fine, don't care about the stats; but don't act like these things don't matter for college football.  Otherwise, let's just get rid of the band, the M-Club banner, etc. and fully turn it into the NFL minor league.

Maybe clinging to these sorts of things is a symptom of the underlying problem that has us in the current position we are in right now.

What? How? This is a ridiculous statement. Provide an actual tangible action that supports this ridiculous statement.

How do fans (FANS) boasting about the all-time win percentage literally effect the on-field product. People still give a boat load of money. People still fill the stadium. We still have top-notch facilities. We are willing to pay for a top-level coaching staff. Our history allows us to recruit at a level not commensurate with our recent success.

So what is "clinging to these things" and what is the literal effect of that clinging?

I chose my words carefully. I didn't say the clinging was the problem. I said it's a symptom of the underlying problem.

It's okay to have those things and use them as a recruiting tool. But this institution seems to rely too heavily on its past. Sure, the fans have no impact on the games, but the culture is driving this mentality.

Spencer Hall once described Michigan as being a very traditional program that was entirely about blue haired old people bragging that they've been in the same section of Michigan Stadium for 75 years. It was an incredibly true statement

Our entire program is built on old upper middle class people driving to Ann Arbor from suburban Chicago every weekend to mindlessly 50 year old Bo Schembechler quotes to one another. We have the only fan base of any major team in the country where there are a plurality of people who prefer playing at 12 p.m. to playing at night largely because it's either more traditional or more efficient for doing things other than watching football depending on who you talk to. This blog, which used to advocate for esoteric playoff proposals and radical spread offenses, eventually aged into a decade-long crusade against piped in rap music at our hallowed stadium. Our elderly fans have refused to adopt student-led chants and dances even after decades, in spite of almost 15 years of university encouragement we can't get anyone outside the student section to commit to a maize out.

Michigan football is an heirloom. It's like one of those legacy railroads. You come to a game and think "wow, so this is what football was like before anyone cared about winning national championships". If you think Michigan being a Wisconsin level program is a bad thing, and I don't necessarily think that, then yes part of the problem is the obsessive focus on meaningless things like all-time winning percentage and having the largest stadium.

Nobody gives a flying fuck about Group of 5 schools.

They've played a fraction of the amount of games that we have and play against the likes of Fresno State and Wyoming. Fuck off with this shit. Pick Six previews has a hard on for bashing us.
