Hello: PWO QB Peyton Smith

Submitted by Magnus on February 2nd, 2020 at 7:29 AM

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet, but 2020 Travis City (MI) Central quarterback Peyton Smith (who previously played at Ithaca) committed to Michigan as a preferred walk-on yesterday. He was visiting Michigan over the weekend with a small list of visitors (LINK). 247 Sports has him as a 2-star, the #153 pro-style quarterback, and #3709 overall.

I'll post his highlights below.

Good luck to this kid. It’s huge for a kid to be added to a program with a name like Michigan. It’s the same as a kid being allowed to join Notre Dame with the exception being the Irish making the playoffs and natty a few years back. Good luck kid

I’ve avoided posting in here because of the rampant negativity consuming the board.  But, I felt compelled to comment and let you know that’s you’re a fucking, lame ass DBag!

Instead of being happy for the kid, you post this snarky crap, and it’s the same bullshit in nearly every fucking thread!  It’s beyond tiresome.

His oldest brother was a Wake Forest commit but transferred. His other brother starts at Harvard. Both bros were Ithaca QBs. Peyton was squeezed out of Ithaca by the coaches' son and played well at TC Central. He also played WR/CB.

I have a daughter.  I was asked once to take her to soccer practice.  Once there I saw her running sideways & crossing her feet, tripping over herself.  Unlike her "coaches" I pulled her aside & showed her how to shuffle.  Of course later I got a call from her mother, screaming at me about being critical of her daughter.

If there was one thing in her childhood that was constant, it is that I was only used as a backup to spend time with my daughter if nobody else at all was available (though I would drop everything to do it.)

It also gets old real fast when half of the time for scheduled visitation you get a call when she's late with your kid saying "Umm... I can't come today."  Why?  "Ummmm..." (muffled talk in the background "Because I can't."

Sometimes you have to let the mother play her games and not play them back.  Just be there for the kid as much as possible.

I have coached all 3 of my boys (One is now coaching at Ferris St, one is playing in college and the youngest is a junior). The one playing in college didn’t even start until his senior year because we had 3 kids ahead who were all-state type kids. He was in the rotation, but not a starter. It’s not easy, but I think I’ve done a good job of not showing favoritism. I think they would all say I was actually tougher on them than other kids haha. I guess the biggest issue is, regardless of their success, there will always be people who say they played because they were a coaches kid.

much the same here, though blessed with a couple more sons.  i did my best to not show favoritism (and still some time to go with the 4 youngest boys), and i think i've done okay at that.  i haven't gotten any guff from parents about it and i've been coaching a dozen years so hopefully that might speak to being reasonably objective.

I got squeezed off my Senior League all-star team because they went with a coach's kid instead. They missed my bat and didn't get far--the coach's kid was a fucking banjo hitter at short and I had scary power off a line drive stroke in a addition to being a pretty good defensive catcher. Still, it's been close to 40 years since that happened and I'm...still...fucking...bitter...

Competition isn't always great up that way, and it's a highlight film, but this kid looks athletic and throws some really nice balls, especially a few on the run. Congratulations to him

Congratulations to Peyton. A great opportunity to learn a lot about football and get a great degree. Go the three year route, and then transfer to a small school for a chance to start for a year or two.

That’s a nice PWO. I’m surprised he’s not getting some looks from some smaller d1 schools, granted all I’ve seen are these highlights.

His mechanics aren’t perfect, but that’s something that can improve. What I’m really impressed by his how he can throw on the run. There is a play in there that he is rolling right and launches it 50 yards down field with great accuracy while on the run, that isn’t something many high schoolers can do. He may never start for us, but having quality walk on guys like this in practice helps more than people realize.

Super Bowl 2020 rosters: How the Chiefs and 49ers starters rated as high school recruits

The average star rating of both teams' starters is like 2.5 stars. On either offense, there is only 1 4-star or above. Defense a different story. But pretty interesting.

He looks good!  There have been walk-ons that have gone on to be huge contributors, NFL players, even a Heisman winning quarterbacks.  It's great to have as many talented walk-ons in our program as possible.

The kid's name is "Peyton Smith?"

Does this mean that Peyton Manning and Alex Smith had a baby? Because if so, this kid REALLY has genetics on his side!

Congratulations, Mr. Smith. Go Blue!

Harbaugh has done a great job in establishing scouting specifically devoted to improving the PWO signings. You build up scout teams and depth that way, and if you do miss on that bluechipper, that depth can eventually provide good stopgap starting, if not an All-B1G kid. So... welcome Peyton!

Hell yeah.
