Hello: PWO DE Joey Klunder

Grosse Pointe (MI) South defensive end Joey Klunder committed to Michigan as a preferred walk-on for the 2022 class. Listed at 6'4" and 235 lbs., he claims a 375 lb. bench and a a 520 lb. squat.

I'm a little surprised at this development, since he has some FCS and Division II offers, plus some service academies. But if Michigan is his dream school, then so be it.

Having grown up in Grosse Pointe myself, I feel comfortable in guessing that Klunder doesn't need a full-ride in order to financially afford attending college, whether at U-M or any place else.

Or maybe his Blue Devil teammate Will Johnson persuaded him to commit.

Don, I'm guessing you were a Grosse Pointe Shores guy from a long time ago. I'd also guess that, these days, there are a few people in the blocks near Alter Road that can't afford to pay for just any college out-of-pocket. The demographics have shifted a little bit.

LOL. I grew up in the Park, and spent all of my teenage years living in an upper flat on Nottingham, just a few blocks from Alter. I was only able to attend U-M on scholarship and financial aid, given that my divorced working mom had very little money to spare. Thankfully, the tuition/fees/room and board costs of UM back in the early '70s made it far more affordable for those with modest family incomes than it is today.

Economically, we were very similar to most of the people I knew on Nottingham and Beaconsfield south of Jefferson who also lived in the duplexes that made up most of those streets—we weren't poor, but we sure as hell weren't in the same tax bracket as the people that lived in the large detached houses on Westchester and Balfour to the immediate north or Lakepointe or Pemberton or Barrington to the immediate south.

More to the point, the economic resources of my family paled in comparison to the vast majority of my classmates. They typically were the sons and daughters of doctors and GM and Chrysler execs and grew up with Cadillacs, memberships in the Lochmoor Club, cottages up north, sports cars in high school, skiing trips every winter, and sailing in the summer out of Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. The only way I could have gotten in the door at GPYC was if I was delivering pizza at the back.

Is it possible that Joey Klunder comes from similar circumstances to mine? Yes, but I'd bet not, especially because he apparently passed up scholarships in order to attend Michigan on his parents' dime.

TMI, Don! Interesting, though. Your regal bearing and sentence construction just seemed like "Shores" to me. :)

I get your point. I see so many crazy parent decisions with colleges, though, that aren't driven by common-sense financial thinking.
