I am sorry that depression has set in. Recently divorced? Having a difficult time finding employment, Shawn? I can suggest a good therapist.

You seem to have a lot of time on your hands, having 300 burner accounts and getting banned from every message board on the internet. A therapist may do you well.

good morning 1606.  thank you for not calling me a name that included an 'f'.  i consider that improvement.  what are you doing besides blogging these days?  life is for the living and your non-stop anger is going to eat you up inside for no good reason.  what are your hobbies?  do you go out much?  what about sports, are you still of an age that you might play in some type of league, maybe softball or golf, or even bowling?  i may be a dolt and all manner of other bad things, but i don't have that cancerous hyper-critical and angry spirit that you seem to.  maybe you should have a real change of perspective, it might be good for you.  if we're being candid, whatever you're doing now isn't working.   wishing you well, 1606.

p.s.  who is shawn?

Speaking from experience yes it can depending on how you process it.  But it also gives one the opportunity to grow and be a better person.  For some it's a choice.  For others depression is the mental condition that they are and can't get out on their own. Mental health is a lot more prevalent than we think.

Any time I hear someone say that people like this need help, it reminds me of an old Playboy cartoon. In it, a seriously pissed-off guy is lying on his therapist's couch, glaring at the doctor. The doctor casually removes his pipe and says with a smile,

"You know, my receptionist has an interesting theory about your case, Mr. Fenwick. She thinks you're just an asshole."

The fact is that this coaching staff has shown many times that their evaluation is more accurate than scouting services. It is not like we are just taking this kid because we have no other options. I am quite happy to rely on the expertise of our staff.

Thise are the facts as I see them...

I almost always agree with you but on this point i must challenge you a bit.

Basketball recruiting yes....all damn day long yes.  Coach Beilein has proven time after time that he can spot talent and develop that talent 10x better than all the recruiting services combined.  Praise be his glorious name.

But football?  Where do see evidence of that?  Where are the all B1G players who came into the program under the radar?  Our biggest stars came in generally the highest ranked.  Are there outliers...absolutely ..but most players have either played up to or down to their star rating expectations.

I think we're blurring the two programs relative success in recruiting together somewhat.

Devin Bush came into the program the #312 player in the country, #11 ILB.  He leaves an All American and a likely first-round NFL draft pick.  Karan Higdon came in as the 40th-best RB in the nation, just inside the top 500 in the country, and finished the year on the conference's first team.  Chase Winovich was a 3* OLB who turned into a dynamic edge rusher.  Farther down the line, Jon Runyan Jr was all-conference this year and was basically a 2*.  Yes, all of them looked "better" than their rankings, but when you're Michigan you don't recruit a ton of guys outside the top-500 or so so their aren't a ton of examples where guys who out-perform their rankings because they were all pretty highly regarded.

Are they finding a ton of All Americans in the Brandon Watson region of the rankings?  Not necessarily, but few programs do.  I'd say Watson being a solid corner as the #800 player in his class is pretty good, as is Josh Uche in the 700's looking like a future good defensive end.

Couple things: Winovich was a composite 4 star. Runyan was a disaster against anyone with a pulse this year, his all B1G inclusion was befuddling to say the least. It only took him 4 years but Higdon was finally a productive player as a senior but he was accurately ranked and his NFL draft position will show that. He wouldn't get major carries at a place like Bama or UGA IMO. I don't think I need to mention Watson and the OSU game.

It's funny seeing you move the goalposts when the facts get in your way, but whatever.

When he signed with Michigan Winovich was the 535th ranked player in the nation, a composite 3*.  The fact he got rated higher in the end only highlights the fact UM saw something with him before the services did.

While it may befuddle you why Jon Runyan Jr was regarded as a pretty good lineman by both the conference, the associated press, AND his teammates/coaches, that doesn't change the fact he was pretty good.  But I'm sure it's everyone else who is wrong.

Higdon led Michigan in rushing for the past 2 years, averaging about 5.5 yards per carry for his career.  The conference again recognized him as being one of the best backs in the conference.  And again, getting that level of production from a guy at that spot is pretty good.  Myles Gaskin was ranked in the same general vicinity and turned out to be a really good player for Washington, but otherwise you don't see a ton of guys getting starter reps there.

Watson struggled against OSU.  He also was the #116th CB in the country when he signed and finished his career with 3 picks for 2 TDs, 6 pass deflections, and a couple of defensive player of the week awards as an above-average third cornerback.  Not half bad in my book.

But again, please come back with some other rationalization for your wrong take.

Winovich was a high 3 star, closing in on the 4th.  I agree with your post in general but the the post claiming Winovich was under the radar is simply not accurate.

Winovich is placed just inside the top 30 outside linebackers in the class. Going by position rankings, Winovich is four spots away from a fourth star on Scout and ESPN, nine spots away on Rivals, and 21 on 247.

How guys developed once on campus is only one measure and not the most accurate for the comment made above. A better analysis would look at when a guy committed or was seriously being recruited, what their ranking was then and what it ended up in the final rankings. That is a better measure of how well the staff identifies talent and recruits it.

If only someone on this blog could do a whole post using data looking at player rankings over the course of a recruiting period. There would be no need for hot takes and disagreement. The data would have all the answers. If only. It’s like Seth does absolutely nothing as editor of this blog to not have something like that posted on the front page within the past 30 days.

Isaiah Wilson was also considered a project by many and a five star everyone wanted. Raw, but full of potential. He has the body to be special and thus scouts ranked him highly.

Kwity Paye on the other hand also has a great frame, but still lacked size in high school. Don Brown saw something he liked and assumed the physical maturity would come.

What I'm getting at, is that talent can be more easily apparent with certain body types and measurables. A good scout looks for more than current measurables and projects what kind of player they'll turn into.

Ronnie Bell is a great example of a player that was underscouted in high school by the recruiting sites, but the coaches thought was worth a scholarship at Michigan.

Obviously, no scout can be right all the time, but so far our coaches seem to be doing a pretty good job. You should be proud of them for getting a guy they see great potential in, especially because they have a good track record of identifying rising offensive linemen early.

I'm sure they're just as upset as you to lose players to schools like Georgia. That doesn't mean they aren't competing. Not every player values the Michigan experience as much as financial stability for themselves and their families.

There's no reason to shit on the players that want to play for Michigan; most of them had plenty of other options just as good. At some point, your desire to voice what you believe to be honest and fair criticisms of the program, has left you on a lonely hill, where you throw rocks from just to get attention. It's time to come down from that hill and remember what it feels like to be on the same team as the rest of us.

I’m actually impressed with how often you are wrong and then move the goalposts. Now, if I’m reading this correctly, overall rankings don’t matter, only one analyst saying he is a project is what matters? And that analyst didn’t even say he wasn’t a 4 star. Is that what you’re saying? Reranking him was wrong because you misread one guy’s evaluation that said he was a project?
