Submitted by ThatFatMan42 on

Just caught a program alert on BTN saying there was a press conference coming up at 2:25pm

Mod edit: Update via Mocha Cub. Posbang him here:

**I took some notes to post here for those that couldn't watch the news conference. Picked a random response on the first page so they wouldn't get buried on one of the later pages of this thread. This isn't all quotes, had to do some short-hand notes/paraphrasing to keep up...apologize in advance for any typos or names incorrectly spelled**
QB competition?
Been very good from day 1. Play/competition very good, been improving daily/weekly. All QBs playing at very high level
Do you know starting QB? Will you say before game on Saturday?
Yes they know, they will say before Saturday. I didn’t say I was going to say it before YOU on Saturday.
Jake/Chris on being captains:
2 of the hardest workers, both have great way of being good teammates. Build up other guys around them and make themselves smaller, which makes them big in the eyes of their teammates. Talk/Coach the young players well. Caught Jake helping the young TE’s on several occasions. Chris gives advice to the young defensive lineman (specifically mentioned Ron and Rashan). Captains were voted on by the players. Coach’s votes/freshman votes did not count. That’s why it’s a great honor and means so much.
When you have several worthy candidates for QB, what helps make decision?
All the guys haven’t played in the games in terms of experience. Each has game experience, but here, game experience, want to see the things that will really translate to the games in terms of moving the offense, converting 3rd downs, getting team in end zone, avoiding mistakes that hurt drives and avoid turnovers. Those above all on the list have been what’s been evaluated.
With the addition of Biff Poggi, what do you anticipate his role to be?
No little people, everyone has a role. We all have things that we’re good at and not so good at. Everyone does a little and it adds up to a lot. Has found that to be the case on good, great, championship teams. Football-wise, he’s a line coach at heart and has a great love/affection for it. Biff is good at everything across the board. Trusted agent and known friend.
Bredeson still have a shot at the LT spot?
Yeah everybody is in the mix. Unique thing about college fb is there’s no preseason or warm-up games. Practice/competition rages on. Want guys to put themselves in the position to be ready when called upon. Ben is very close, I wouldn’t anticipate any not playing. He’s acquitting himself very well right now.
Advantage for Hawaii to have worked out some of their kinks or bigger advantage to have film on them first?
They have a very capable rb, qb, good football team. It will come down to when we play good, we’re darn tough to beat. When we don’t, we’re susceptible to be beat. I think that will be the case as well.
What other true frosh will knock on the door to get playing time?
With everything that our frosh have going on, being in summer school. Great way to get their feet under them and get some credits and getting to know the landscape. The rigor at the U of M. Build a great foundation for themselves academically. At football practice, that was the only part of the day they were involved in football (weren’t involved in classroom portion). Wanted to see what they could do athletically, run, catch, track the ball, play with vision, etc. We thought there were quite a few players tracking to be in the 2/3-deep. Last week been catching them up more on the schemes. Thinks they will play in the games soon and there will be a good number of them. David Long covered a go-route in yesterday’s practice as good as it could possibly be covered. From press coverage to the point when the ball got to the receiver, it’s as good as could have been covered. Competitive waters have been boiling.
Do the QBs know who the starter is?
Yes Ben Gedeon, went from role player to this is his defense…? Great player, worker, he’s a football player. Authority figure? That was your word, not mine. That’s not a word that comes to my mind.
No depth chart yet, does that mean there’s still competition for the positions, is that a good thing this close to the season?
I always thought of that as a good thing. Iron sharpening iron. Very good thing that’s written in the bible, from the word of God
Asked about Kaep/anthem?
I acknowledge his right to do that. I don’t respect the motivation or the action.
This time last year still a lot of unknowns, how has that differed this year & with expectations, are they meet-able?
That discussion has been raging on and we’re looking forward to having at it. Can’t wait to watch guys compete
With schedule starting how it is (implied weakness of schedule starting out) is it hard not to look forward?
Football is rough sport, don’t want to show lack of respect towards opponents each week. Very respectful approach for each and every game we play.
Will Kenny do all 3 aspects of kicking?
He can, but don’t know if he will. Kenny is best at all 3 (punting, kickoffs, field goals). If that remains the case, he will do all three. Would like him to not have to do all three. Closer competition in kickoffs and field goals. Quinn close in those. Ryan Tice (spelling?) making a lot of field goals, doing a good job. We’ll see.
How much have Jabrill and Jourdan been on offense, specifically Jabrill?
Yes (LOL)
How much?
We don’t go into that. There’s options, they’re all on the table. Anything to share on injuries, long-term injuries? No, nothing for public consumption.

It's less about individual racism and more about systemic racism.  You can be totally non-racist on a personal level (true for Harbaugh) while unthinkingly support or more likely ignore systemic racism.  Questioning Kaepernick's motivations rather than his actions falls into the latter.  It's good that he apologized.

Hopefully that's the end.

Harbaugh took a hard stance on the movie showing at the school when it was being shunned. This statement from him isn't a surprise. The butt hurt crowd though will definitely wring it out as much as they can.

So Jim Harbaugh is a racist because he doesn't condone not standing for the national anthem. Wow!!! America is going down the shitter. This country is so pussified right now.

Understand it's his right to say what he wants, just as it's Kaepernick's. I get that he's a very patriotic person who thinks that everyone should stand for the national anthem. And no, his statement doesn't make him racist or mean that he doesn't recognize the struggles of African-Americans. That's just silly--it's convention for all athletes of all countries to stand for *every* national anthem, actually.

BUT...this is not his battle to fight, and life is sometimes about picking your battles. I don't see how any good comes of getting involved in the hubub surrounding one NFL player's political statement, while it's sure to be a big distraction.

Kap's problem is simple. He expressed his opinion on 2 disjointed topics (police treatment of minorities and Hilary Clinton's truthfulness from emails) and used the American flag as his catalyst.

The problem is that the flag represents the armed forces to the majority of Americans.

The fact that Kap's 2 subjects are unrelated and he used a 3rd unrelated symbol as a protest vehicle is why he is wrong.

Maybe Harbaugh shouldn't have used the word motivation (unless Kap is doing this for a trade or something), but who can respect Kap's action, when it doesn't make any sense?

I don't associate the anthem or the flag with the military. I associate those with the country of which the military is a part of. I also disdain those who rant about disrespect of the thes symbols, but do nothing for the soldiers they supposedly cherish so.

Just the other day a soldier blew his brains out in a VA parking lot because of a delay in getting into the VA. He snapped. We have soldiers killing themselves at an alarming rate, a dysfunctional VA system, and we have sent men into dumb wars for 70 years.

All of these impact soldiers and veterans far more than an act of disrespect towards the flag. If you want to be angry about something be angry about all that I just wrote above.
