Harbaugh hires father of elite 2019 QB recruit for staff position

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on
Michael Johnson, Sr. has 10 years of NFL experience as well as serving as interim coach when Ricky Neuheisel was fired from UCLA. He's currently the head coach at The Kings Academy in Sunnyvale, CA. He also has a son (Michael Jr.) who is being recruited by Michigan at QB.

A rare win at Assembly Hall.

Not exactly a vintage Indiana team, but there have been lots of non-vintage teams we played at Assembly Hall and we could not get a win anyway.

This is big.

I wonder if this hurts our chances with DTR? If I was in his shoes I wouldn't choose to go to a school where the number one player at my position will be going...and his dad is on the staff.

I agree but QB is a little different than other positions. Every other position group has multiple players on the field and your less likely to care about the depth chart. At QB only one player is going out there and I wouldn't want to be in a battle against a guy whose dad is on the staff, not to mention highly rated. I could be wrong, but I would be surprised if DTR comes to AA now.

Wonder if he can play when its not 100% sunny? I mean looks like he's never played with even a single cloud in the sky. Other than the night games ever game day in Sunny Sunnyvale is apparently very Sunny.

I used to live in Mt. View near Sunnyvale so I know they get at least one partly cloudy day  per year :)

Ok, we would be really mad and slamming our detractors for a title like the op wrote. How about something like, Michigan hires another amazing well qualified staff member who's son is a promising qb? This is closer to the facts and reflects what i belive is our character.

when Paterno hired Johnson,Sr to get his son, who with today's rankings would have been a 5* RB.

However, and our detractors are fully aware, there is a huge difference in being a Harbaugh assisstant and that of most other coaches. When hired, as we've seen with Durkin and Fisch, your back on track toward career goals. Maybe even Ty, but I think in his case he was probably considered by many but promised JH a year or two to re-right the ship.

Pep's case literally is a statement as to the character you reference. If you can become an assistant to Harbaugh, you have placed yourself well to achieve career goals, and an NFL OC might not be considered  higher level than OC at UM. That, of course, would only be due to Harbaugha and the fact that the "great chance for career advancement" many employers more than likely use doesn't even have to be said by JH. Fisch and DJ in two years have proven that.

JH is doing what most cfb staffs would love to do. I won't say its his desire, but obviously when you're hired by him, others are goingt to come calling.....very soon obviously, so he needs to reload on staff annually. He's used this for the NJ connection we now have and Partridge has more than earned his money, being one of the best recruiters in the nation and lber coach now, and who knows tomorrow? In this case, you get a great, proven coach, and we've all seen the film on his son. We won't play OSU/SEC recruiting games, but we damn sure will take advantage of the rules, especially when they help offset our inherent disadvantage in recruiting by playing within the rules. If their HC had the connections Harbaugh had and could fight back effectively in this manner, they would.

I knew we were getting a damn fine coach when Jim came home. But I honestly have to say I was shocked at just how bright and creative he is in putting all the pieces together. And while he's busy doing this, the one thing not on his mind is possible ncaa sanctions. Even as tight as the bag men have become as to not getting caught, shit happens, doesn't it for those of you in MS?  Hell, it's been two years only and by 2019 we just might have 4 to 5 qbs on the roster that the top teams in the nation would like to have just one of.

Our detractors -those on the up and up - should be happy he's found a way to fight against OSU/SEC Recruiting policy. Not everyone is up to the task obviously. But he has proven you can fight back without breaking the rules.

...because Speight made some amazing deep throws.

I can't wait to see if Michigan fans start backtracking if Speight develops into a NFL QB,  His improvement under Harbaugh has been incredible. Let's see how he performs with another year of experience...

Back when the fans booed Brady and cheered Henson, sites like MGoBlog didn't exist. But now, things are crystallized for better or worse.

as almost all have said. Addressing the concerns of mutiple posters about "not stepping into the throw." I am certain if there had been any film where he had to make a deep throw while being pressured, we probably would have seen this as well. The one constant, other than his accuracy was he was virtually duress free on all of the passes on that film. Of paramount importance in situations of this nature is to maintain perfect balance and use the combination of posture and arm movement that, over the years, you've developed. There are certain individuals who are are blessed with an inexplicable talent for throwing the football, and yes, the truly gifted make it look effortless. He was virually "playing catch" in the film we saw and - this is a very good thing - did nothing different than he had during pickup games and anything else prior to his freshman year. Most, when they suit up will, like the majority of us, are incapable of stemming the adrenaline. To see this kid, again at such a young age, behave on game day the same way he approaches practice, was another very  impressive sign.

Now as the defensive pressure comes, and it will be while he's in the pocket, because we saw he prefers to throw on the run while outside the pocket, rather than stop and reset. If capable, this is the prefferable manner. And again we saw little effort as to wasted arm movement and, of course the more efficient the throwing motion, far fewer things to correct if the ball is taking off on you for some reason on any given day. You will see in The BIG, or wherever he goes, a more typical back to front exchange of weight on the deeper balls where he's throwing from the pocket and attempting longer throws. In his case, of course, not unlike Winston, it will not be as exaggerated as most. With the running ability we saw, a qb that likes to throw off the edges will drive the D crazy because they will never be sure with him if he's flowing to the outsdie looking for a receiver or because his intention is to run. Also, given his age, don't expect much of a change, probably no more than what is mentioned. His overall body strength and not just the arm will increase, magnifying the rare gifts he already possesses. Obviously his father has fine tuned much of what needed to be done, but I can guarantee most of what he taught him as a qb was reading defenses, composure needed for the position, overall polishing the entire package. When you begin tutoring any qb candidate, of course, proper footwork is a must from a checkpoint list but our new coach's son was a better thrower of the ball naturally than his father and that's why we were watching 40 yard, seemingly effortless tosses. He' going to be a damn fine one. Would like to see him in the maize and blue.

I ventured over to the RCMB and their take on this is even though its within the rules it's "slimy". Yes, this is slimy but having multiple people possibly being kicked off the team isn't.

When I read his qualifications and his history with Harbaugh, my reaction was a good hire, especially if the 10th coach is approved.

Having a talented kid is just icing on the cake.

This hire works for me on all fronts.

Loved the combinaton of arm strength and touch his son showed for a freshman. May be listed as dual-threat but he definitely looks pass first and has a world of potential.
