Happy Day Before Thanksgiving, The Greatest Holiday

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Many years ago I figured out that Thanksgiving was my favorite holiday, not the least of reasons being that it is uniquely American and it usually entails more time off with the people you love.  So do tell, what are your Thanksgiving plans?   Who will you be with, are you traveling, and what's on the menu?

This year for us, as per usual, it will mean hunting with the children, home for Thanksgiving day eating a turkey from the farm, and heading down to AA for 'The Game' with 3 of the kids (draft of which 3 kids hasn't happened yet.  May open it up to out and out bribery, ala SEC recruiting methods).

One last thing.  As many on the board responded so deeply to Chad Carr's passing I would just mention that to the extent so many shared thoughts of 'appreciate the ones you love' I would expand that out some -  maybe each of us could deepen that sentiment by doing something for people that maybe nobody loves.   Whether in your community, your church, wherever, near or far, anyone who can access this blog is wealthy beyond dreaming compared to most of the world.  And sometimes the real 'wealth' isn't stuff you give, but time.  Figure out who could benefit from your time and attention and go make a difference in their lives.   And make them Michigan fans.

Go Blue, beat ohio, and Happy Thanksgiving.

Today, I work in the AM only and then I basically get to drop my kids off with their grnadmother at 3 PM and I will have the remainder of the day to myself as my wife is working until late.

Tomorrow, pretty much the same tradition - family arrives just in time for some part of the dinner to be running a bit behind, but then everyone eats while the Lions play and then wakes up just in time to see the final score.

Thanksgiving is the best day of the year (if not The Game).  Unfortunately the kiddos will be with their mom this year which is always pretty rough.  The GF and I at  doing a duck with cornbread/chorizo stuffing, Brussels sprouts with bacon and mashed potatoes and parsnips.  Then we're headed out for dessert and a drink with friends.  Should be good!  Go Blue!!

Today will be a long day for me at work as I am taking Monday off as well so this is basically the last day of the month for me at work. My sister and brother in law are coming in tonight so they will stop over tonight and then tomorrow is the normal menu, nothing special. Oh and football, I will be watching football all day tomorrow.

Thanksgiving blows, it represent a country being stolen by immigrants who murdered all of the natives. Thanks indigenous Americans, for giving us your land. Here, have a casino....

My dad's dad was Chickasaw. He fucking loved thanksgiving. Also never worked in a casino, was never an alcoholic, didn't smoke a peace pipe, etc.

Keep on your crusade of making sure others know when they should be offended. SJW's make the holidays awesome!

Gratitude meeting with 100 or so folks tomorrow at 7 a.m., daughter and son-in-law driving in from Lexington KY to meet us at Wife's aunt with a couple dozen from that side of the family, back to east side at one of my sister's with a couple dozen from my side of the family.

KY daughter and son-in-law with me shooting sporting clays with cousin Jeff at his club on Friday.

The three of us joined by other daughter, who has 3 UM degrees, for the best tailgate (see Angelique's book of 100 things every Michigan fan should do) Rick Leach will be there with regulars Russell Davis and Harlan Huckleby.

Double digit defeat of the Buckeyes, then root for Penn State.

Who's got it better than us?

nobody!

Football from noon til night. Everybody comes over to my house for dinner which means I get the leftovers for the next week!
No presents to buy or lights to hang or annoyingly repetitive carols to hear.
Just food, football, and family.
Cheers all!!

Going to shoot some birds today, have the family over tomorrow and eat and watch football, watch football and eat leftovers with my old man on Friday while the ladies shop. Then wake up Saturday slightly out of shape and head to AA with an Enthusiasm Unknown to Mankind.

I was planning on going to a Bourbon County release tonight, but I think that my plans have been recalibrated by the fact that it's my friend's birthday. He showed up to my birthday with a bottle of Birth of Tragedy (beer is my other significant interest along with sports), so there is a combination of desire to be there and obligation. This is one of the best drinking nights of the year. Everyone, be safe.

Tomorrow, I'm headed to the parents' house (they live the next town over). I'm making wings and providing the beer. I will do the least amount of work of my family and get the most praise. For that, I am thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Tomorrow morning I board a flight from Nova Scotia and head on the journey I've waited for the past 30 years. My brother and I will be attending the game at the Big House this weekend and I am so amped up I can't even explain it! That's one of the many things I'm thankful for this year. Early Happy Thanksgiving to all my American friends, and GO BLUE!!

Despite Black Friday, Thanksgiving itself (at our house) is pure family time.  Very little of it is "quality" time, but I view watching football, throwing the football or playing soccer, grilling, and lots of meals with the family or subsections of the family as quality enough.  I can usually get away with a half day's work on the Friday of Thanksgiving, and often get a rare four day weekend.  And nearly every year we spend Thanksgiving at home with the immediate family and perhaps some friends or extended family members.  It's intimate, and not a big production like Christmas can be.

To the OPs message regarding outreach, I suggest not only reaching out to the forgotten and neglected in your community, but to keep an eye on those within your own family that may not be doing so well.  Maybe they're going through a divorce or break-up, or out of work, etc.  Let them know that you appreciate them and (if true) love them not so much for their successes, but for the content of their character.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!!

for the fact that I'll be spending the holiday with my family, instead of the in-laws.  In addition to being an awful person, my mother-in-law is a terrible cook.

My mom on the other hand rocks out on the major holidays.  Kielbasa, pierogi, city chicken, and so much more.

I'm going to leave work early today and make an apple pie to bring.

Both are uniquely American celebrations.  Yeah, yeah, our Canadian friends have Thanksgiving (October?  Really?), and some other small outposts do too, but it is a special day with incredible historical roots.

Not a big Christmas guy...the commercialism just has worn me out.

My husband and son will play in the annual Turkey Bowl with my husband's friends from high school. Someone will win the papier mache bronze turkey leg MVP trophy, which looks more like a disco caveman's club (don't tell my husband I said that; he made it). Then we'll have a small Thanksgiving dinner with my gluten-free mother-in-law. I'm already fearful of the gluten-free stuffing, but looking forward to the flourless chocolate cake. Plus, I did get some good old-fashioned flour-based turkey gravy at our local butcher, which I will stash in the gluten zone. Having mashed potatoes without real gravy is a crime in my book.
