Happy Birthday, Bo and Bob

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on April 1st, 2019 at 8:17 AM

No April Fool's joke - Bo Schembechler and Bob Ufer were both born on this date. Bo would be 90 today and Ufer would be 99. I trust they're sharing an Oberon up there in Football's Valhalla.

Happy birthday, fellas. Go Blue.

MGoBlog on mobile is such an awesome experience—having to wade past ads for “Hot Survivor Contestants” and “Get Rid of Nail Fungus” in order to comment on Schembechler and Ufer definitely sets MGoBlog apart from the crowd.

But it's free, Don. The only free website on the entire internet. You have to insert 75 cents into your monitor to view other sites. Not MGoBlog. It's free. Never has an independent blog been so free. So please, no complaining.

If the notion that pop-ups truly were determined by one’s browsing or search habits, I wouldn’t be so cranky about it, because then I really would see ads for skulls, dinosaurs, insects, supersonic bombers of the late ‘50s, natural history, famous WWII battles, heavyweight title bouts, and all the other interesting random shit I look at on the internet.

I’ve never once googled nail fungus or hot Survivor contestants.

That's the scary thing Don.  The advertising algorithms are so powerful now that Madison Ave knows you have foot fungus, and a fetish for sexy reality show contestants, even if you don't.

You should probably call a doctor and order a subscription to Entertainment weekly.

Happy birthday to both of them!

TOTALLY RANDOM, UNRELATED FACT: The last episode of "The Bob Newhart Show" aired on this date in 1978. Don't ask me how I know other than being a huge fan of the show.

I met Bo once in an airplane heading back to Detroit. He sat in front of me and was reading a book the entire flight. I wanted to talk OSU, Rose Bowls and general football but respected his privacy. As we were deplaning, I said “hi coach, tough schedule this year.” He said yeah you have to play them all. This was the spring before the 97 season and was one the only chance I had to talk with Bo.

The organization I used to work for once had Bo as a guest speaker. In honor of this, I wore my UM jersey to the event. (In the sea of business suits, I was pretty noticeable.) As Bo and Brandstatter walked past the check-in desk where I stood, he saw me, jabbed a thick finger at me and barked with a hint of approval, "Hey, Number 12!"

I managed to reply, "Hey Coach" without my voice cracking.

I also managed to stop myself before I dropped and gave him 20. He just had that kind of aura.

Hey, it’s also my late dog’s birthday.  Well, we adopted her at the Ann Arbor Humane Society in mid-May, and they said she was six weeks old, so I assigned this birthday to her.  And I didn’t even realize it was Bo’s at the time.  Always got her a quarter pounder with cheese to celebrate, and cut it up in her dish.  She ate it in about 30 seconds, but always left the pickle behind.  Great dog.

I never connected that my son and Bo share the same birthday. Yet another of the many reasons to play "The Team, The Team, The Team" again for him today. He's turning two, what does he care?

Fun fact (that most of you already know).  Bob Ufer was a world record holder in the 440-yard dash at one time.  They also don't run that anymore because they use metric and run a 400 meter, which is 7 feet 8 inches shorter than the 440.  But I still think that's awesome.

The above shot was taken at the Big Ten Championships, held in Chicago in March, 1994. I think Ufer is breaking the tape in the quarter-mile.

Dual meet between Michigan and Illinois, 1942 in Ann Arbor. Looks like Ufer is breaking the tape in what I assume is the 440.

No info on what this image shows other than it looks like a meet at U-M. In some competitions Ufer is wearing glasses, and in others he's not.

Ufer wearing his letter sweater in 1950. He'd already been doing the play-by-play for Michigan football for five years by this point.

This was taken at an event honoring Ufer in 1980. Left to right: Bo, some young Robert Redford lookalike who's actually Rob Lytle, Ufer, Fritz Crisler, Tom Harmon, and Ron Kramer.
