While everyone focuses on RichRod, The guy whose performance I am watching is GERG.

This is his second year, and the fact that he is playing freshmen means at least some of his players he recruited himself.

Sure, there are weaknesses in personnel, (every team has weaknesses) but a good coach can overcome some of that.

The verdict is still out on whether he is a good coach or not.  He certainly failed at Syracuse.

He has had plenty of time to teach his system.  He moved out Hopson and coaches the linebackers himself.

This team's success this year depends A LOT on GERG's performance of his job.

I still think the talent level is pretty thin in the back 7.  There's some good potential from some of the young db's but a lot of guys that will be playing this year probably shouldn't be.  It'll be a good baptism by fire that will hopefully serve UM well in future years, but will probably result in a lot of growing pains this year.  Sure you can say he should coach them up, but usually that happens after the guys have been in the system a couple years.  IE - they might not be the most talented guys/recruits but they spend a couple years on the sideline learning the system and the fundamentals and when they see the field as upperclassmen they are solid players.  Gerg isn't going to have that luxury with the secondary.  Same with the LB's - You're probably going to have 2 new starters at LB, neither of whom have spent much time in the defensive system.

Wisky and Iowa are two teams often mentioned for not getting the most talented guys but usually having fairly solid defenses.  That's because rarely are they throwing freshmen, redshirt freshmen and guys who changed positions in the spring into starting roles.  They're usually playing upperclassmen with maybe one or two really solid guys who are redshirt freshmen or true sophomores.

You must have missed the crowd at the Big House in 1998.

And you're preaching to the choir on the greatness that is Michigan football. This is Syracuse football... It isn't Michigan, but it has one of the great football traditions...

expectations are low (at this blog at least)...that doesn't mean Gerg shouldn't be expected to beat expectations.  He knows most of the players -  he should be able to scheme around the weak spots.  I have no issue holding him accountable for getting our D in the best position to win.
