Greg Mattison Recruiting

Submitted by Jaqen H'ghar on

Where has Greg Mattison been on the recruiting trail? He was easily one of our best recruiters under Hoke and I'm sure he played an integral part in bringing in Rashan Gary. Just haven't seen or heard much of him this year. Especially in the Aubrey Solomon recruitment. Which is strange since he would be his position coach.

I wonder how many of us could keep up with the demands of their jobs and the amount of travel they do.  I'll take the slightlty slower pace combined with the wisdom.  The old bull and the young bull.

Forget about worrying about Mattison. The guy is incredible. He is way more hip then I am, and most of us are. The kids love him. He is a coaching and recruiting monster. His daughter and granddaughter are nearby in Tecumseh. He has job security, but isn't sitting on his laurels. His son, last I heard, was in northern Indiana (near ND?) so he is close to his other grandchild. He doesn't need the money, but it is nice. He has a great relationship with Harbaugh senior, in addition to Jim Harbaugh (and brother John). He actually was on Meyer's staff in Florida. The guy has been around, and is now settled.

The great thing is that there is no ego between him and Brown, let alone Drevno and Harbaugh. That core of guys are all professional, and they set the tone for the rest of the staff. I'll just say, it is a miracle when you have a great team of COACHES who get along and work well together. I would love for Mattison to coach for another 5 - 10 years. He will step down when he knows it is time. And it isn't time yet. Actually, between him and Brown, we can afford to have turnover in the rest of the defensive coaching staff. Either one can step in when a younger coach moves up the tree and takes a promotion elsewhere. Mattison has coached the line, linebackers, and been the DC. I have no doubt that Brown, but also Mattison, are helping out a bit with the LB group. And even if it isn't their focus, they aren't idiots about the secondary either.

Provided we get Solomon, and better yet, also get Tufele, we are entering into a golden time on the defense. We are now reloading instead of rebuilding. With one of those two, we have depth at every position on the defense, and can focus on 2018 and 2019 recruits.

Not only is the OP's basic assumption exactly the opposite of what's actually the case, but others are suggesting that Mattison is one step away from the ICU and at the end of his coaching career.

I'm sure he is in on the recruiting just fine. Have you looked at the defensive line haul this year? If they get Soloman I might be overcome with emotion.

Does anyone else love how Greg Mattison stayed on the coaching staff and was moved to the only area that was consistently good under Hoke? Good use of a good coach by Harbaugh in putting him at D-Line.
