Greg Mattison DC Buzz?
Just stumbled on this:
Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is talking with the University of Michigan about their job, per league source.
It's all over numerous sources via Twitter (Ravens_Football, Ravens Insider) FWIW.
EDIT:

Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison is under consideration for the same position at the University of Michigan, the Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday, citing a league source.
Mattison, who has interviewed with Michigan, coached with new Wolverines coach Brady Hoke under Jack Harbaugh at Western Michigan and Lloyd Carr at Michigan.
The Ravens defense has ranked in the top 10 in the NFL during both of Mattison's seasons as coordinator after Rex Ryan left to take the New York Jets coaching job.
The Sun reported defensive backs coach Chuck Pagano could be a front-runner to replace Mattison.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if IIRC he is losing Ed Reed and/or Ray Lewis?
January 18th, 2011 at 4:33 PM ^
... they both retire, which I havent heard anything about. Ed reed still has a year left on his contract, and ray lewis is signed thru 2015
January 18th, 2011 at 4:29 PM ^
.. really does not like him right now.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:51 PM ^
It's Michigan for God's Sake!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
So I am assuming calling him Gerg Mattison would be an acceptable reason to neg?
January 18th, 2011 at 4:23 PM ^
Call him Gerg 2.0 - improved version with less hair (I know, I posted this already...)
January 18th, 2011 at 4:22 PM ^
Better listen to this guy before you hope for Mattison.
"soft coverage, three man rushes...
January 18th, 2011 at 4:30 PM ^
this guy needs a couple more drinks
January 18th, 2011 at 4:31 PM ^
Looks like he had a few too many...
January 18th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
is a douche
January 18th, 2011 at 4:28 PM ^
I do not think I saw this in anyone's comments...
Would he run a 3-4 here? Do we want a 3-4 or a 4-3? I know most people would prefer a defense that tackles, but do you have a scheme preference?
Edit - I will not bring age into this, it is cold in Bolivia this time of year.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:29 PM ^
I want a D that scares people. I don't care about the scheme as long as when opposing teams line up against us, QB's are wetting their pants and RB's and WR's are checking to make sure they have plenty of kleenex to clean up the snots bubbles they are shortly to be blowing!
January 18th, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
I will put you down for undecided on scheme. However, I may add a category for a defense that causes the opposing offense to have snot bubbles because that would be awesome.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:43 PM ^
I will not pretend that I know a fraction as much as Mattison about defense. If he thinks that a 4-3 is good, fine. If he thinks that a 3-4 is good, fine. If he likes the dreaded 3-3-5, fine. Hell, he could run an 11-0-0 and I wouldn't question it if I saw QB actually wet his pants as you suggest. Bottom line is that this guy has had success at every level as a DC, so sign me up.

Its summer now in Bolivia but always winter in Oblivia.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:31 PM ^
The Ravens' defense hasn't exactly been a playmaking defense this year. Granted, Ed Reed has been out.
I just want someone and I want to start drinking kool-aid and be done. Some recruiting news of the good sort would also be nice.

Ravens Defense when healthy: See playoffs. Their miserable offense cost them the game against the Steelers.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:35 PM ^
I have a very hard time seeing Mattison leave a great defense in the NFL for one of the worst defenses in the country last year. Would love to see it, but im just struggling to get excited over it.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
Money talks, and I bet there is alot of left over Harbaugh/Miles money to go around
January 18th, 2011 at 4:39 PM ^
... The possibility he's thinking about the lockout, why sit at home and not get paid when he could be here.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
There is definitely always a chance I won't debate that, but there was also a chance Gruden would have come be our head coach as well. There are a number of reasons why he might do it, but a lot more reasons why he wont; mostly named Ngata, Lewis, Reed, and Suggs. I for one will be excited if he comes, but I don't want to get my hopes up only to be disappointed again.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:36 PM ^
would make some sense. We've all been wondering why Hoke's waited so long on DC. If he was, out of courtesy, waiting until after the Ravens' playoff run it would at least give a reason for the delay...not that that means I think it definitely will happen, but it would explain some things....
January 18th, 2011 at 4:38 PM ^
Don't know if this has been previously said, but with the labor unrest in the NFL, he might not want to take a year off if it would come to that with the players union and ownership. Would be a good hire I think.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
I didnt think of that but its an excellent point. The NFL is not in a great position right now with those negotiations. With a work stoppage seeming to be very near to reality it might not be a bad idea to be looking for a new gig.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
That could play into it. However, there will be a labor deal reached. The NFL and the owners have too much money to lose if they do not. Billions of dollars will be lost. If there isnt a labor deal reached then both the owners and the league are ran by complete idiots.
January 18th, 2011 at 6:01 PM ^
There will be an NFL season, but it might be a couple weeks shorter.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:40 PM ^
the problem w/ mattison is that he's 61.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
Who cares? He coaches here for another 5-8 years and rebuilds a defense. In that time he also brings in quality assistants and grooms them to take over. I see no problem with this.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:44 PM ^
Isnt Dick Lebeau in his 70's. In case you hadn't noticed UM DOES NOT have a DC! The time to be extremely picky is long gone. IMO he would be an awesome hire.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:45 PM ^
I said the same thing yesterday and got nailed for it.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:46 PM ^
is 73 - seems everyone on this board thinks these guys asplode when they hit their 60s. Mattison at 61 might mean he's good for 4 or 5 years or 10 depending on his health and drive...and he could groom up a hot assistant coach (ooo...hot assistant coaches? Eva Longoria for Safeties coach???) to step up to DC when he's ready
January 18th, 2011 at 4:48 PM ^
I bet she could recruit...
January 18th, 2011 at 4:58 PM ^
This maybe a stupid question but why is there a red circle on this picture?
January 18th, 2011 at 5:03 PM ^
Confounded
January 18th, 2011 at 5:04 PM ^
Ok at least im not alone in thinking that. I just spent a solid couple minutes trying to figure it out and I got nothing. I keep thinking it's photo hunt in the bar except the other picture isn't there.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:15 PM ^
is indicating where this picture was photoshopped to give our lady under consideration a slimmer aspect.
if you do engage the picture long enough it does seem that that side of her curves unnaturally. why they would enhance a woman like that who is already astoundingly beautiful is perhaps more perplexing than the red circle itself.
but then again, it could be some sort of target swimwear ad? i don't know? like the DC hire, it's all conjecture baby!
January 18th, 2011 at 5:37 PM ^
I'm going with photohunt. Now I just need a beer and the other picture.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
It looks like the circle is there to indicate where someone thinks she was photoshopped to look thinner. I'm guessing the picture came from a photoshop "fail" blog.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
its probably a look-this-is-photoshopped picture
January 18th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
This pic proves the point that no matter how hot the girl is....some guy is sick of her.
Tony Parker had that and said "hey...my teammate's wife looks pretty good. I think I'll text her a million times or so. What bad could come of that?"
January 18th, 2011 at 4:47 PM ^
... Monte kiffin is 70 and he still coaches just fine
January 18th, 2011 at 5:23 PM ^
Joe Paterno still coaches and he's 84 bajillion years old, LAWL.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:41 PM ^
I want this to be true......oh man do i want this to be true. But after the past several weeks of one crushing disapointment stacked upon the next crushing disapointment like waffles I must admidt my capacity for cynical distain is higher than my ability to hope.

Something something something defensive coordinator.
Something something something Hoke.

Still nothing new, I need a drink ! Bartender, bartender bring me that bottle of Makers Mark, stat.
January 18th, 2011 at 4:48 PM ^
Was that all bs? Can we please put that rumor to rest? Please? I don't know if I can sleep with that thought rampaging through my head. Mattison on the other hand would be fantastic. That would give me some hope for our defense.
January 18th, 2011 at 5:29 PM ^
The Ron English stuff wasn't even a rumor--it was a hoax.
