GR Press: Hero D'Antonio a "Coach, Mentor, Parent" of Criminals

http://www.mlive.com/spartans/index.ssf/2009/12/spartans_mark_dantonio_… Overall, I can't disagree 100% with Beardsley's overall point, however, a little heavy on the savior/hero tone, don't you think? It screams of "D'Antonio IS Family Values" At the end, he states that "Jenette and Winston made D'Antonio look silly." I find the choice of the word "silly" to be a little light-hearted considering Winston is a convicted criminal that coach D let on the team because he had zero upper-classman depth at running back. I think "stupid" and/or "irresponsible" would of been a better word choice. D'Antonio gets flat out embarrassed by 12 of his players and he looks a little "silly." Fair-and-Balanced. Fail

don't want to get killed on the board for this, but is the cadillac ad on the left killing anyone? i love the high-end sponsors, but that thing keeps flying across the screen and i can't read a lot of the post.

Nothing new. Dantonio and his jawline = good. RR and his "document shredding" and "sweatshops" = bad. It is probably overkill to keep complaining about this here at mgoblog, but the newspapers are nothing if not a sucker for an easy narrative. Just wait until MSU struggles for a couple of years - and it will happen - and see how many people rush to protect Dantonio. We saw the wolves come out when RR struggled; the same will happen in East Lansing.

This is struggling to elite programs like UM, OSU, USC, OU, etc. Before Dantonio showed up, MSU failed to record consecutive winning records (regular season) since 1989-1990, and their best streak was probably 1995-2000, when they went 6-5, 6-6, 7-5, 6-6, 10-2. So yeah, three consecutive seasons for 6 or more victories might get him into the hall of fame, or at least the hype video, at MSU.

is a bunch of crap. First, the M football program would have gotten slayed in the Freep (screw 'em) for a Randall Hall-type incident. Second, any football program in America would have released Winston immediately after the first incident. I'm for giving people second chances but D'Antonio needed to think of the possible future harm that could be done. People got beat up and hurt for no good reason in the Randall Hall incident. Finally, I'm waiting to see what D'Antonio does if any of the players get convicted of criminal charges. Will he suspend them longer than just a Bowl game? Will he give them a "second chance"? Will he throw them off the team? He needs to be careful. A lot of peolple will be watching to see how he handles this going forward.
