I would agree that our recruiting efforts need to be truly national in scope—the way they've been for 40 years—but I think it's very smart for Hoke & Co. to plant a flag in Michigan and Ohio to start, if for no other reason than to unequivocally state to HS coaches and their players that we're going to contest MSU and OSU for every top-level recruit.

Recruiting benefits from momentum, and we've got it right now.

But while what you say is true, what we need to do is recruit TALENT, wherever it may be. There's a good amount in the backyard this year, so it makes sense to recruit the easier guys around you than go around the Country. But if it's a down year and you have to go cross Country, then you do.

Contrary to some radio views yesterday, the idea is to get talent. Getting a less talented guy just because he's from Florida or Texas is no better than getting a less talented guy because he's from Michigan. And while it'd be great to be able to compete with Alabama, or Mississippi State, we need to be able to compete with MSU and Ohio State first. Once we're THERE, we can worry about the SEC.

Re-reading it, it sounds like I'm disagreeing...I'm not. Every point Don makes is right.

I just am reacting to some of the "you have to recruit nationally, these Michigan and Ohio boys aren't going to do it" that was going around yesterday on the radio. And the idea that a guy who has equal or less talent is better just because he's from Florida is, well, stupid.

I love the cake story-

Mom went to get him a Michigan cake, and cake guy asked why he needed a cake in May, and said he played a sport, then asked what, "football"....turns out he's a big MSU fan, and starts saying how Hoke won't be there 3 years, and he's read how the family is forcing him to go there... His mom says "Best thing is, you're still going to have to make the cake".

Awesome news...the recruits just keep on coming. Excellent start to this class but there's still a long way to go. Most importantly, however, congratulations to Mr. Godin and here's to a successful Michigan career!

They will still recruit nationally, but this strategy is how we get back to the top. They are sending a message to MSU that we're taking back what's ours and also to OSU that it will no longer be automatic for them in Ohio. Every top program owns their own backyard. Even if the talent isn't always top notch, by owning your territory you make sure that you don't lose top guys when they show up (Nick Perry, Mark Ingram, Rojo, etc). I'm not saying any of those guys were anyone's fault, but the top programs rarely ever lose elite players that are within 75 miles of their campus.

Welcome to Godin.
