GERG Thread #2: The GERG Nickname
I've been wondering for a while now how it came to be that people started calling Greg Robinson "GERG". I asked this question in the other GERG thread and didn't get a satisfactory answer. The Google has not helped me either. This doesn't appear to be unique to the Michigan fan base which makes me think it started during one of his previous coaching gigs. Can someone help shed some light on this please?
It was one of those Internet typos that becomes notorious. Someone transposed the E and the R in his name and the name stuck. Similar to Blizzard accidentally replacing the o in owned with a p, creating pwned (this was long before WoW, for all you high-schoolers out there).
Yeah I be pwnin' fools since Atari son!
I almost threw an entire marriage down the drain for Diablo when it came out.
Diablo 3 ....
It wasn't that long before WoW, it was Warcraft 3. WoW is also about 7 years old now, which is frightening to me.
Definitely Starcraft, not Warcraft 2 or 3.
"It was originally misspelled in the text trigger of a map made by one of Warcraft 1's more famous mapmakers. "
And there is our nerd knowledge for the day. God I'm sad I googled that.
And I here I thought it had its origins in one of the earlier shooters where you could play other players online or networked. Basically, it was shorthand for pistol owned. It was for someone who got cocky and took other players out with a pistol. I want to say it was Doom but I could be wrong.
Gergorian chants in Rome around the 6th century A.D.
Also, there was once a Pope named Gerg, officially named Gergorius, I believe.
Orson Swindle at Every Day Should Be Saturday mistyped "Greg," then decided that the name "Gerg" worked well for him. I think the use of caps was an MGoBoard innovation.
When I was doing my research I found the post on EDSBS you are talking about:
http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/2008/09/04/greg-robinson-pain-i…
But I didn't make the connection that Orson was the first one to mistype the name and then keep using it. From the use of "we" in this quote it becomes somewhat clearer:
"In addition to finding sudden joy in mistyping Gerg Robinson's name, since "Gerg" seems like such a better nickname than any other we can make up, the long, painful, fat-man-tumbling-downhill decline of Syracuse is made all the more interesting for us as teams now seemingly out of league are now licking their chops at the prospect of playing the Orangemen."
Orson uses the "royal we" on his blog. He started the GERG meme.
Also similar to an iPhone correcting "oblivian" to "Bolivian".
I think Gerg is an old, old wooden ship. Used during the Civil War era.
Ohio State is the ironclad. Doesn't even bother to fire its guns. Just smashes through the GERGship at the midsection, doesn't break a sweat.
Well they actually didn't for the first quarter this year. I was very, very optimistic about The Game going into the second quarter.
Gerg's defense held for that, if only in a Thermopylae kind of way.
Those poor Mediterranean cultures can't seem to catch a break, can they? :-)
I took a page out of your book and passed on physics lecture in favor of MGoBlogging and actually doing the pre-lab for my next class. It's amazing how much busywork can be manufactured in the name of the scientific method with these legit college science lab courses.
Hey, I didn't skip class to MGoBlog, I just...zoned out a bit and that bit me in the ass when I got real, actual pictures from Denard's helmet cam.
legit. where do you find these helmet cam feeds?
I think that the whole "Bolivian" think predates the iPhone by a lot. It comes from Mike Tyson, who said something like "I beat my opponants into bolivian."
Well it didn't start being a meme on here until an errant iPhone made it one. I had actually never heard his Bolivian quote until I just looked it up now.
How do we know it was an errant iPhone? "It wasn't me; it was my phone!" is becoming the new "Dog ate my homework."
Hey, it could have been Mike Tyson. I remember the thread though; the guy said it was his phone, but profit was having too much of a laugh and started repeating it all over the place and it spread.
I wish I knew what thread that was, I would love to go back and read it.
After Tyson lost to Lenox Lewis he was asked what's next for him and he said he would "Just fade into Bolivian".
Right - man, Iron Mike was a funny dude without even trying to be.
Really? That's where the oblivion/Bolivian bit came from?
I'm going to start replacing the word "a" with "Byzantine," since I had a friend who complained years ago that his T9 automatically filled in "Byzantine" anytime he typed in the letter "a."
You didn't look very hard. According to Google, this took me all of .17 seconds.
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Gerg
You should be neg bombed because this has been asked and provided many times before.
Rule #1: Don't talk about the neg bomb....
hahaha this could be the best Urban Dictionary definition ever:
"Gerg is one bad ass mofo who constantly gets poon and does drive bys. If nothing else a gerg is a straight Bone Thug."
That other thread wasn't "GERG for the last time"...
I think he would be a perfect fit at KU when they start going on about their damned chalk.
MaGOBlue, I applaud your follow through. In the other GERG thread, you threatened to start your own thread on the topic if someone didn't provide the answer, and by gosh you did it, you crazy bastard. Well played.
MAgoBLUE does not make idle threats
Greg, spelled BACKWARDS. Or is that SDRAWKCAB?
To the Fifth Dimension...
