The gerg's future

Submitted by cargo on
I have been thinking about it and given the gerg's history of bad head coaching and age, I'm pretty sure if our defense is actually consistent we might have a DC for a more then 1 year, and be here for a while. Which we haven't had since Jim Hermann. Hopefully though he keeps up with the times and not fall behind like the Hermannator.

I could see him becoming a beloved, grizzled, old DC at UM. I'm guessing he doesn't need the money nor the crap that goes with being a head coach. Some people are made for it and some aren't. I hope GERG decides that he is made to be a DC and stays for awhile. It's not like too many places should be knocking down his door with job offers after his record at Syracuse, anyway. At that age, would you rather try to rebuild someone who has no chance at an NC or stay as an assistant where you have a very good chance of winning one soon?

If Greg does a good job, I could foresee him staying for quite awhile. Which would be great for our program. One thing that might get in his way is if Bill Stewart and his coaching staff gets canned at WVU. Rich Rod would likely give the job to Jeff Casteel if he came looking.

Rich Rod must still be on good terms with Jeff Casteel as he supposedly offered our DC position to him this past offseason. Casteel has said that he doesn't want to leave WVU unless it's for a head coaching gig, which will probably come sooner rather than later for him.

Given his past "success" at HC I hope he really does like it here and decided to stay for the long haul, but we just don't know about what's inside his head. If he does experience huge success at Michigan could he be lured to an NFL DC spot or even give HC another try somewhere else? However, I'd rather have that problem waiting in the future than the Ann Arbor Pitchfork and Outing Club waiting at his doorstep.

I dont remember which interview it was but it said that Greg called RR to discuss the DC position. That makes it seem like he wanted to get right back on the horse and could have other aspirations. But who would hire him as a head coach now? I think he is our DC for the foreseeable future unless he puts together some monster defenses, or fails miserably.

to Jeff Casteel. Greg Robinson has better credentials and a large amount of experience over Casteel. I think we are set with our coaching staff for a while. (Hopson will likely be the first to go)

If Gerg is successful here, would we have enough $$$ to keep him? Down here in SEC country, assistant salaries have been quickly escalating these past couple of years (TN,etc). He would be a prime candidate and might be lured away for more $$$$. Hopefully we can keep him with the 'ole "hometown" discount.

If Gerg has a bad year is he done? I just wonder how committed UM is to The Gerg if the defense flops. I would assume, and I know what happens when you assume, that UM will stick with him for a couple years. Obviously, It would really negatively affect recruiting if we ditched two DC's in two years.

Given the youth of the defense, I'm not sure how much a bad season could be pinned on the coaching. Robinson is probably safe unless he (like Shafer) butts heads with RR.

If he wanted to be a head coach, I'm sure he could have gotten an offer from a smaller school. He found Michigan, so hopefully he wants to be here.
