Friday Rifle Opener, Hate Week, H.S. Playoff Posbang

It is one of those fantastic Fridays that happens this time of year when so many great things line up to happen together. For the deer hunters, it is the rifle opener this morning. There will be at least one Mgolurker (we call him Larry) hunting on the farm today...and a sparty. The sparty hunter is a true yooper and a great guy. Taking a page out of the Escanaba in da Moonlight film, we'll call him 'Jimmer'.
It is 'hate week' and we all feel the building momentum of our team putting it together while sparty looks like the wheels are falling off. With the huge caveat about not counting chickens before hatching, it would be so sweet to send Mork off with a parting gift from JH and the rest of the Wolverines.
And finally, for some of the folks here you still have a team in the high school playoffs. What a special time in those young mens' lives as they get to play on after so many teams have handed in their equipment for the year. Here's to your favorite high school team getting it done this weekend - win and move on!
Our lives have many challenges, but sometimes you really do need to stop and smell the roses.

I’m going to work instead of hunting today. Yeah, I know. Screwy priorities, have I. But I just spent the better part of 16 days in a small, cramped tree stand, 11+ hours per day, and I let every deer I saw pass by.
So, much like MSU, this just isn’t my year.

Pretty much. I shot a lot of smaller bucks when I was younger, but I realized I’d never get a bigger, older one if I kept that up. So now I hold out for the big guys. Or, when I travel and hunt in areas with thick herds, I’ll take a doe or two because I love venison.
UP hunting isn’t what it used to be, but I still do a bit of the camp thing for the camaraderie, tradition, and to get the kid involved.

I thought long and hard about going bear hunting here in VA this year. It would ended up being just a hike in the woods for me. We only have black bears here in VA and while bears are the animal assholes of the wild, I just can't see me blasting one.

i don't know your habitat in VA, but a good bear is a good meal. they are kin to pork and look very similar when skinned.

Bear burger is excellent, as is bear sausage. My late father used to experiment a lot, and one time he corned a bear I’d shot. Man was that stuff awesome.

RGard, i agree. Im happy to kill almost anything, but aside i couldnt shoot a bear for sport. Even if i went hunting in africa, im not shooting leopards or lions. Stick to ungulates.

He's the one that gets camp ready, fire wood stacked, etc. and shows up at 0430 hrs most days. Larry brings fresh homemade pasties, still warm. We are not exactly roughing it...

Will be at the game tomorrow. Hoping we finally get that cathartic beatdown we've been anticipating since Harbaugh arrived and Sparty started to fall of a cliff. It's also my birthday tomorrow!
Our high school, Birmingham Seaholm, miraculously beat Groves last week and plays again tonight. Parents were out at the field last night shoveling the bleachers in anticipation of the game!

I’m here to smell the roses and for a bang bang start to the weekend! Flying in tonight, heading straight to Crisler to see Juwan and the boys win #3, and then bundling up for what I hope will be a total Spartan beat down in the big house tomorrow. Feeling very fortunate to be able to share these experiences with my son. Bang bang and Go Blue!!

I’m with you all in spirit if not in action nor location. November 15th will always be a magical day on my calendar.
Looking out over a chilly Chesapeake Bay, this weekend holds homework for me today and the game tomorrow. In between I’ll be making about 40 Christmas fruitcakes. The early morning quality checking of rum soaked fruits is one small bonus.
