Friday Night Hockey, Beer, and General Drunken Foolishness Thread

Submitted by justingoblue on

Should be a good start to this weekend series. I took the plunge and got the premium Fox channels after buying a new TV yesterday, so I'm excited to see the game in HD and not just sitting on my lap.

As far as liquid diets go, I have a Hopslam or two budgeted for tonight, so I'm pretty excited for that as well. Let's share a good night with some hockey and some beer, capped off by a big M win.

I'm still a rookie, using Mr. Beer.  It's the Oktoberfest and it came out pretty good.

I made a witbeir a couple months ago that was pretty awesome.  I added two boosters to get it around 10%.  It was real similar to an Imperial White with a more citrus flavor.  I actually enjoyed  it more than the Imperial White.

I've only made 3 batches but I am addicted.

Oktoberfest? Before Labor Day?? For shame! /s

Doesn't matter if it's your first batch or your hundredth, making your own beer rules and you should be proud. Don't forget to write everything down, even the ingredients they give you in the Mr. Beer kit.

And check out BeerSmith if you haven't yet; it's well worth the thirty bucks.

The Oktoberfest was a Christmas present from my brother.  At about three in the morning on New Year's me and my friend said fuck it let's make some beer.  I have quikly learned the two most important things are sanitize, sanitize, sanitize and write EVERYTHING down.

You got the biggest rule down (the sanitize one) so it's gonna be tough to make a bad beer unless you make some really gross concoctions. Although it is fun to make a shitmix out of all your leftover malts and hops at the end of the year. The last time me and my friends said "fuck it" while drunk around Christmas/New Year's time, we ended up with a hand built shuffleboard table in my basment. These things happen.

What Fox channels did you purchase?

I moved to DC in June and I'm dying without FSD for Michigan hockey. I bought the Comcast Sports Package, so I get BTN, NHL Network, NFL Net/Redzone, Fox Soccer, like 10 ESPNs, CBS Sports, NBC Sports, etc...

The only games I get to see anymore are either on BTN or NBCSports when we play ND. HELP ME WISE TV SAGES

(Note: I can figure out streaming over the net. I'm talking real TV dudez)

I'm watching it on Fox College Sports Atlantic. I just got it today, but it doesn't seem to "Atlantic" so far; in the past five hours they've had shows about Arkansas' quarterbacks and MSU basketball, plus M hockey.

Just to add this here, with the good guys wearing white and Miami red, I'm finding myself doing doubletakes. I'm always rooting for maize, blue or red on the ice, the white is messing with me.

I'm flipping back and forth between the hockey and the Pistons, so here is a random Pistons thought: I can't fucking wait to draft Thomas Robinson so Jason Maxiell can stop wasting everyone's time.

No problem! I like it a lot - it's much lighter and more crisp than Two Hearted. It also looks almost like a pilsner in the glass with some light lacing. I highly recommend it! This would be a great spring/summer patio IPA - still has a very citrus/pine finish just not too heavy.

Awesome, thanks! Based on your recommendation, it'll be the next beer I buy. I always thought Two Hearted was really easy to drink for an IPA, so it's good to know the Lagunitas is similar. I'm not a big fan of the dry finish (twss?).

I don't know how deeply you feel about gin, but this is my favorite gin drink, called the Purple Chongo (as mentioned in N2Deep's legendary song "Back to the Hotel"):

Ice in your cup

4 parts tonic water

4 parts [? see below]

2+ parts gin (depending on your preferred strength)

1 part cran-raspberry juice

? = Grape Kool-Aid traditionally, but could be substituted with anything on the spectrum from a dark colored Kool-Aid to a pink lemonade

Garnish with lime, if so desired.

My friends and I make them by the gallon. We eventually settled on pink lemonade because the vitamins from that and the juice seemed to prevent hangovers in the morning no matter how much we drank. We used Beefeater gin for lack of pine-ness.

EDIT: Tonic water contains quinine, which, according to the all-knowing Wikipedia, includes the following: fever-reducing, painkilling, and anti-inflammatory properties.

My advice: get one of those 1 gallon red cooler jugs from walmart, you know the one, it's $7. Dump in a liter bottle of tonic; mix up a liter of Kool-Aid in that same bottle & dump it in; eyeball half (or more) bottle of gin and dump it in; eyeball a quarter bottle of cran juice and dump it in, fill the rest of the cooler with ice, put the top on, shake it up a bunch of times, and pour it out of the tap into some solo cups. All night long.
