Friday boozing thread

Submitted by UM Fan from Sydney on

I got home a little bit ago, grabbed three Octoberfests, and poured them in my giant stein. Fuck it! I'm staring early. I also threw Denard '14 in the 360 and continued my dynasty. Let's go.

EDIT: I originally posted this as a diary. I'm sorry. Thank you, acnumber1.

You want to talk about dull, try turning on and off a pitching machine for two hours. The only exciting part was collecting the baseballs every 10 minutes or so and dumping them back in the machine. There was a spider on the batting cage that was way more interesting to the kids than the actual batting practice.

How old are the kids? I am doing informal fall baseball drills with a bunch of 7- and 8-year-olds and it can be brutal. I also got roped into coaching rec soccer for the same age even though I haven't played soccer since I was, well, about 7 or 8. But I also coach my 10-year-old for baseball and basketball and it is a world of difference. Every year their attention spans improve, and the kids who don't want to play slowly peel off.

Just woke up a bit hungover after drinking some beer from the Snow Brewery in Shenyang, weak rice lager. My GF's brother is a county official here so the brewery keeps his home stocked. Today's goal is to find a place that will show the game.

Pardon my ignorance--why is September 1945 an important commemoration? Are they simply commemorating the end of the war or was there something specific that took place in China? It would seem like they would want to choose an event from when the war was actually being fought, though I suppose many of the events from 1937-45 are more likely to draw attention to the failure of Chinese resistance.

Japan's surrender ended the slaughter of millions of Chinese. I guess that's why they make a big deal out of it. The Communist Party has a problem dealing with the specifics of the war since almost all of the fighting was done by Nationalist armies. The Nationalists took the Japanese surrender in the south, the Soviets in the North. Yes, Chinese resistance failed to stop the Japanese, but so did everybody else initially. The US and UK could surrender and flee and come back to fight another day, but the war was in China's streets every day for 8 years, not counting the occupation of Manchuria, and they kept fighting at the cost of millions of lives.

That makes sense. I was just wondering about the specific date/event being commemorated. I think the Red Army did take on some of the fighting, launching guerrilla attacks in Japanese-controlled territory in the north, but Japan responded with the brutal "three-all" campaign, so it sort of backfired. Also I have the impression that after the initial offensive in 1937-38 large portions of the Chinese population lived under Japanese occupation (or Chinese collaborator governments) and may not have been exposed to constant warfare. Of course, even when the war was going on the Nationlists and the Communists couldn't stop fighting each other as well. No surprise that fighting resumed so quickly when the war ended. Anyway, the way the Party crafts its historical narrative is pretty interesting-the Long March is a good example.

I'll be having some Centennial this evening and probably playing some Football Manager (year five into my dynasty) while watching College Football after the kid is asleep (Nerd alert).

Also had a Founders Spectra Trifecta, which they brew for Artprize in GR. It's a Kolsch brewed with lemongrass, ginger and chamomile. It's...unique. Too much lemongrass.

Graduated from WMU last year and moved to the Bay Area. If there's one place I miss, it has to be Beer Exchange (or Waldo's on Pitcher night - can't beat a 6 dollar pitcher of rum and coke). Note: Don't try to buy all the PBRs to make them the most expensive beer on the menu. It does NOT work.

Grilling some grass fed NY strips right now to a nice medium rare (for me) and medium (for the Mrs.) with a Hoegaarden in hand. Then switching to a Shafer Merlot with the meal.
