Former 4 star Michigan Target Jameer Grimsley enters portal

Submitted by JMo is my hero on January 19th, 2024 at 10:17 AM

6-3 corner out of Tampa that we were in on before Bama got him. 4 star, 189th in the composite, would be a welcome addition to the CB room.

So he's going to UGA or OSU

Ole Miss backup

We aren't paying recruits or unproven transfers.

Our recruiting problems pre-NIL have actually gotten worse post-NIL.

Not sure how much longer we can win on development and culture, specifically with bidding wars going on every year for all players on rosters, not just incoming freshmen.

If we keep the status-quo of how we operate, it will probably be a 4 or 5 year gap between really great years like this one. It will be having back to back classes hitting and retaining and also landing a quality QB in those classes is most important. Sort of like how the ‘20, ‘21, and ‘22 classes aligned so well and we had our QB and a lot of players sticking around.

Most of our key talent on offense is already gone. The key factor is: can Sherrone's presence keep the defensive talent around?  That was not his side of the ball, but he may still have a strong relationship with those guys.

It is imperative to keep that defense together.

Thinking it through logically, the rational move for every player after a coaching change is to re-open their market. They retain a valuable call option (return to the school) because the new coach will be desperate to retain as many players as possible, so they have an opportunity to re-assess their market value for free.

Not sure why the negs….although I don’t follow posting history so maybe you made some enemies.

I think your point is well taken though.  There are some really quality PROVEN head coaches out there.  Carroll for example: national championship, Super Bowl, excellent offensive and defensive coach, and how old would you think he is if you didn’t know?  Even if he coaches for another 5-7 years, I still think that’s a much higher floor than hiring Moore.  You could argue that Moore would provide stability to our current players, but other than that, you can’t say he can match any of those other applicants on any other accomplishments.  Other than being younger.  Even if Moore turns out to be the real thing, you really think he isn’t gone for the NFL in less than 5 years?

That's on us.  We have as much money as anybody.

We should not assume that just because Harbaugh's coaching regime could develop 3-stars into National Champions that the next coaching regime can do it.

At some point we are going to need to replace guys like JJ and Will Johnson with similar 5-star talent guys.  We're not going to get it done without some of those kinds of guys on the roster.

And like it or not, these days you have to purchase those guys.

I don't follow SEC trends, but with Saban retiring a lot of podcasts have mentioned that players came to Bama at a discount due to name recognition and NFL draft potential. Without Saban that is gone so those that leave Bama are expecting a higher salary and an easy road to the NFL. So places like Georgia, Texas, maybe even Miami will land more than Michigan.

I hope that your boss doesn't feel the same way... im sure you work for free too? We have a mindset that these kids should want to play football for the purity and joy of the sport. Its nice when guys have that mindset, like Corum etc.. but corum still is getting paid.

Calling them mercenaries makes it sound like they are only motivated by money. But there are a TON of schools offering money, so in fact, its not just about money, money is a given in most places.. its what else do you have. We aren't in the game because we're not giving money up front. They say nice things about us, but don't pick us because we haven't ante'd up

But it’s the only way to get pay increases that exceed cost of living increases, generally. That’s why job hopping is so common - it’s incentivized.

For most people (since these days, getting a 4-5% or greater pay increase annually isn’t all that common), every year they stay with a given employer, their standard of living diminishes. The extent to which employees are shunned for making smart moves is indicative of cartel behavior. Do shareholders get shunned for trading stocks regularly?

It's not mercenary to take the bag.

Mercenary is going somewhere just for the biggest bag, and nothing else.

There are plenty of schools offering competitive NIL packages, and there are plenty of talented recruits and transfers choosing the best situation (combo of university, staff, development, compensation)

UM needs to add "bag" to their offering to be competitive and attractive to recruits and transfers.

Corum has long been driving around campus in a maize and blue camaflouged mustang with the money he has bagged.   We have bag, but our approach continues to be to use it for the players that earn it.  At some point we need to add a one time signing bonus approach, we have a big enough pool and really have no excuse not to play that game.  Signing bonus are normal in most industries with people who have extraordinary skill and are in demand.  This is no different and not an ethical conundrum as some would make this out to be.  If we think players are being fickle and leaving after such program is set in place, then you structure it in a way you start doing incentives or triggers that happen after sticking with the program.  You can still run a program that doesn't induce mercenary types, because you have due diligence and controls in place to avoid it happening en masse.  Its weird that we immediately blame kids for being "mercenary" instead of the schools who just can't run a normal business model right.  Just like great companies, a great university sports program like Michigan's in the NIL era, should be able to dominate and retain talent without losing culture or its identify.

Problem is, Harbaugh is doing more harm then anyone thinks. Alabama just had a 5 star qb enter the portal. They won't come to MI if we don't know who the coach will be. If Jim leaves players will have 30 day to leave, no matter the time of year.

Does Jim truly love his school?

While it's unlikely that Michigan picks up guys currently in the portal no matter the circumstances, Harbaugh's current NFL interest certainly does remove significant opportunities to land any transfers at all.

Just because Michigan can't bring in an Alabama kid because of NIL reasons doesn't mean Harbaugh isn't also dragging those chances down as well.

I feel like these transfer portal posts are mostly chances for us to complain about our NIL program or the antiquated admission standards for transfers.

We've had some luck, but for every Hauserman, there's 10 Domani's that go to an SEC school. At least most are not going to other B1G schools.
