First good joke of the day - "Michigan's Final Four berth stymied"

Submitted by DubbaEwwTeeEff on

Found a gem this morning from one of Wisconsin's student newspapers:

http://host.madison.com/daily-cardinal/sports/april-fools-michigan-s-final-four-berth-stymied/article_09748a4e-9a94-11e2-bd79-001a4bcf887a.html

From TFA:

However, there was a shocking development while the Wolverines were in the process of cutting down the nets at Cowboys Stadium. NCAA President Mark Emmert informed Beilein and his team their win against the Gators would be vacated due to the recent findings of improper benefits given to several players, including All-American sophomore guard Trey Burke.

According to a source inside the locker room, when Beilein asked Emmert who was responsible for turning the Wolverines into NCAA authorities, Emmert said it was none other than Fab Five members Juwan Howard, Jalen Rose and Chris Webber.

And then later:

“We’re the original Fab Five, and nobody will ever duplicate what we had in Ann Arbor,” Webber said, pausing to take a swig of his brown-bag-wrapped bottle of whiskey.

Well played, Daily Cardinal.

... from page D1 of today's New York Times:

It would take a lot of Pulitzer Prize-level research to determine the sports nickname of the University of Michigan.

That said, I have it on good authority that the main use of the New York Times along the banks of the Red Cedar is as kindling for front-porch couches.

My home delivery edition, in Connecticut, ran the same picture with the headline "Spartans Celebrate."

Since I imagine the "mix-up" reflects some April 1 mischief over at the times, I think the MGoCommunity ought not to hesitate to fill the Grey Lady's inbox.  I believe this is the appropriate address: [email protected]

Here's what I wrote:

I was both shocked and horrified to read the photo caption "Spartans Celebrate" above a teaser photo related to the University of Michigan's basketball victory, on the front page of the Sports Monday section in the home delivery edition received in New Haven, CT on Monday morning. As any sports copy editor must know, the "Spartans" refer to the teams from Michigan State University. The University of Michigan's teams are known as the "Wolverines."
It ought to be noted that the Michigan State Spartans' season ended on Friday when they flamed out, badly, against Duke University (the "Blue Devils") in the previous round. The University of Michigan Wolverines routed the University of Florida (the "Gators") by twenty points on Sunday, thereby advancingto the NCAA semifinal round, known as the "Final Four."
Perhaps the copy editor had heard reports of what superficially appeared to be celebratory bonfires in East Lansing and concluded that the Spartan faithful were delighting in the success of their older, brother university in nearby Ann Arbor. Alas, this is unlikely, or at least it would be unprecedented. Those were not celebrations, but burning couches -- a traditional display of dismay following the defeat of Spartan teams.
I look forward to a front-page correction that properly acknowledges the success of the Wolverines, and that clairifes that the Michigan State basketball team had failed to accomplish anything that warranted celebrations this year.

In advance gratitude for your prompt action on this matter,

I sent a facebook message to 7 people I got tickets with saying I got an email with an error message and our tickets were no longer available.  Expecting a few freak-outs.

He had a nice joke too. Something to the extent of "Michigan's very young so if they get down by 7 or 8 early, don't be surprised if they can't pull it together." Did he not see what they did against Kansas? He did say Trey Burke is awesome and that Michigan has NBA players though, so I guess I forgive him.
