Thanks! Will check this out.
September 28th, 2022 at 2:53 PM ^
I watched it and they mentioned a shoulder injury. I hadn’t noticed anything in any of the posts about this?
September 28th, 2022 at 4:36 PM ^
Not sure if serious or not, but responding. McCarthy was unable to participate through all of spring camp with a shoulder injury, and had to go through a lot of rehab.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:48 PM ^
Thanks. I didn’t realize they were referring to the one from Spring. I was concerned it was something new.
September 28th, 2022 at 6:14 AM ^
Love the vibe between these two.
And I imagine DG connects well w aspiring HS QBs.
September 28th, 2022 at 9:21 AM ^
Not well enough apparently
September 28th, 2022 at 10:32 AM ^
Too well where he actually cares about their well-being
September 28th, 2022 at 2:02 PM ^
Not sure if "well-being" is the right word cuz it's not like his well-being at Michigan would have been worse, but "personal desires" or "individual fit" is probably right. And good for him for caring about that for the HS recruits he works with.
September 28th, 2022 at 5:20 PM ^
By all accounts he's getting the Jai Eugene treatment from Oregon. Can't say no to that.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:32 AM ^
Devin to Michigan as an offensive analyst soon?
September 28th, 2022 at 8:53 AM ^
I think Devin found his niche. He is getting better and better at broadcasting, and if I'm not mistaken he won and Emmy this yr. I think he loves what he is doing and has aspirations to move up in that world.
September 28th, 2022 at 9:28 AM ^
Yeah, his trajectory is shooting up. He gets to do what he loves.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:21 AM ^
If you love what you do, you'll never 'work' a day in you life.
September 28th, 2022 at 5:44 PM ^
"Trajectory ascending" to use a Harbaugh phrase.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:04 AM ^
Holy shit, I had no idea. That's amazing, makes me super happy to hear that. He always seemed like a great human who, under different circumstances, might have had a longer career in football. I'm glad to see him succeeding in what he loves.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:32 PM ^
Shutdown Fullcast gave him a nice shoutout for his color commentary work on the Kansas-Duke broadcast. They are fans.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:18 AM ^
Dudes ascended rapidly as a color commentator calling games: he calls a game on FS1 every week. So that won’t happen
September 28th, 2022 at 10:33 AM ^
There was a rumor actually that he was deciding whether to stick with broadcasting or go into coaching. I guess Brian Griese is showing that the door is never fully closed one way or the other
September 28th, 2022 at 8:42 AM ^
I love Devin he is so good. I think if he was more this, analysis of technique, spacing, JJ reads, on his game telecasts he would be better. I think on game day he focuses too much on the emotion, effort, etc.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:54 AM ^
The problem is the average fan doesn't give a shit about it. They want hot takez, emotions, effort level.
September 28th, 2022 at 9:22 AM ^
And on game day he doesn't have hours to watch and analyze the plays he's just seen.
September 28th, 2022 at 1:31 PM ^
I say I want more analysis, but then when I watch coach’s room broadcasts I feel like they’re a little over my head. Ideally you’d have someone like DG who can marry both approaches and convey the analysis to the casual-plus fan.
September 28th, 2022 at 7:16 PM ^
I love coaches room broadcast because I can understand the technical terms and how they would approach in certain situations. It's heaven for football junkies like me.
September 28th, 2022 at 2:19 PM ^
Exactly, this is how they have to be for the average fans. The uber nerd fans like us will consume the niche technical content later.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:26 PM ^
More importantly, how they are told to be to attract and hold new fans, rather than the ones already in the bag.
It's unfortunate, but they are involved in TV: a desperate attempt to grab and hold the attention of ears and eyeballs for as long as possible, by whatever means necessary.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:59 AM ^
Wow, that is great stuff. Great analysis of the little things that JJ does well, and also how JJ still doesn't trust his shoulder on the long balls so his technique is off at times. I hope someone like Devin is working through the tape with JJ.
September 28th, 2022 at 11:29 AM ^
Perhaps a man who also has played at the university and even had a career in the NFL. If only we had a man like that on staff.
September 28th, 2022 at 9:29 AM ^
Sitting here in San Fran waiting for the free hotel breakfast to open up. Thanks for the video - very entertaining for a non X’s and O’s guy like me.
Funny line: “Why are we arguing about 9 yards on a first down?”
September 28th, 2022 at 10:00 AM ^
Yeah, that was funny. At the same time, were people honestly complaining about that play? It was a perfectly fine play and maybe you get a couple more yards with Corum on the pitch out but he's still against the sidelines with 4-ish defenders around him. That was a good throw to Bredeson.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:24 AM ^
I think Devin was commenting that he might call out JJ in the film room. But then they decided they we making Good the enemy of Great.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:03 PM ^
With a triangle read like that, the Swing to Corum is going to be the 3rd read in the progression (unless they tag it specifically). So I think JJ was doing exactly what he was supposed to do and he did it successfully, and you don't want to pass up an open receiver in a progression.
Devin is just second-guessing the play call (or design), but it's hard to argue with 9 yards on first down - we'll take that every time.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:22 PM ^
I wondered if maybe the offense would come back to that play later and JJ would throw it to Corum. Perhaps he would catch the player in conflict cheating too much towards Schoonmaker (who had the most catches on the team in this game) and give Corum a little more room and a little better angle.
Regardless if M comes back to the play or not, you have Schoonmaker being defended by a smaller player - he could break the tackle. We might also consider how much volume Corum is getting running the ball and maybe save his legs hitting a different receiver anyway.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:08 AM ^
I wasn't overly excited about JJ's performance during the game Saturday.... But listening to DG break it down..... its clear that he had a solid game, not a great game, but comparing it to previous near perfect performances wasn't necessarily fair either.
Onward,
Go BLUE! Lets go to Iowa city and pretend its Indy, Dec. 4th, 2021.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:31 PM ^
I think Borges had it about right re: JJ's grade for the game: a C, C+.
Not terrible, not great. Not good enough to beat OSU (or even PSU), but a good chance to learn from and get better while still winning the game.
September 29th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
He was a couple touch passes with the deep ball from having a great game. He was deadly accurate the 1st game, then no calls downfield in the 2nd. Then Harbaugh went away from him to open up the second half. He’s gonna have to let it rip Saturday cause iowas gonna force it.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:15 AM ^
Great stuff. First time I have heard Devin break down film. Interesting, especially his points about Maryland forcing JJ to read through progressions like the NFL has been doing to P. Mahomes.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:27 AM ^
It is such a shame Gardner was at Michigan when he was. Four years later and he would have completely thrived under Harbaugh.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:40 AM ^
Isn't that a great thought? DG on an earlier video said that JJ has some throws that he wasn't sure if DG could have made it. It was complimentary but I think he was being humble. Good dude.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:36 AM ^
This was great. Thanks for posting. Devin points out a number of things JJ did well that weren’t immediately evident live.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:43 AM ^
I haven't heard this one out and I love listening to DG. Dude is very authentic. Sam and DG are like best buddies dogging each other. It is hilarious. Sam is on fire when he talks about Reggie Bush and how DG should be in his spot. Good stuff.
September 28th, 2022 at 11:25 AM ^
Outside of the high-quality analysis, my favorite part of each week's segment is when Sam goes on his "DG replacing Reggie" tirade(s).
And I think Sam is right here - Reggie doesn't add much to that show. Plus adding DG will allow him and Charles to outnumber Urbz.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:40 PM ^
Except Reggie Bush is a household name in much of the country, while Devin Gardner is not. Yet.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:52 AM ^
Can't help but laugh when Devin says he's going to upper-cut Borges.
September 28th, 2022 at 11:23 AM ^
You know you pay too much attention to football when Sam starts "Is that--" and Devin interrupts with "Yes, it is" before the question is out, and you know what they're going to talk about.
September 28th, 2022 at 11:27 AM ^
Awesome review.
September 28th, 2022 at 12:26 PM ^
If Weiss was ever to return to the NFL it would be great to see Gardner come in as QB coach. I know it is unlikely as he is excelling in his current career but I can dream.
September 28th, 2022 at 1:52 PM ^
He might have to start at a smaller school like Wayne State wearing multiple hats, but I believe he would be a good coach and example to student athletes today.
September 28th, 2022 at 2:02 PM ^
I thought on JJs “interception” he could have had a play into the deep corner of the end zone over the top. Either we score or it’s incomplete but the WR CJ had deep position.

Off topic of this thread, but the pop up ads on the mobile site are horrendous. Makes navigation of the site near impossible. Even as I type this, I have had to back out, a d close that damn ad three times.
Seth, I think that's excessive, and should be looked at. Makes me not want to even check here when not on my PC...
