Governator                                    OFFICE OF THE GOVERNATOR

XM                                                      STATE OF MICHIGAN

Executive Order 2020-71 Friday Night Beverages

The novel coronavirus (Covid-19) is a royal pain in the behind.  The residents of this great state are sorely put upon by it, and it has caused this blog to occasionally degenerate into political discussions that would make a prostitute blush with the lack of civility and un-wolverine like behavior.  There currently is at least a temporary cure for this nonsense, that being adult beverages and, as the warmer weather is upon us, BBQ season.

Due to this unprecedented emergency, and by the authority granted to me by absolutely nobody, I do hereby declare, decree, order, cajole, encourage you all as follows:

1. You shall declare your beverage(s) of choice this evening.  Non-alcoholic beverages are equally welcome in the discussion.

2.  You are ordered to describe what you are, may, might, or would like to cook, eat or barbeque this evening.

3.   If you remember what you did the day you graduated from U of M or any other institution (For Mgohillbilly, that would be the 3rd grade) you will share the highlights, the joy, who you were with and the fun stuff you did that day.

3.  You shall share your planned weekend activities, and failing that, what you do plan to do when that other governor allows you to leave your humble abode - will you be traveling?  Is your work going to be a real nightmare with all the changes and/or projects that will have to be done?

4.  No person or entity shall engage in any type of political discussion.  If you are found to do so, I will order my secret spies to bring a load of manure to your residence and dump it at your front door.

I may, in my assumed and illusory powers, issue additional very important edicts but for now this will do.

Pork or beef? Or I suppose chicken...

as for me I tried (and failed) to make oven baked churros. Best guess is there’s too much butter to handle the long bake needed vs frying. I will try this again sometime though

tomorrow I will try a whole wheat yeast puff pastry... because puff pastry isn’t hard enough, I’ll add two confounding factors to it.

1. I’ve got the cheapest vodka available at Kroger’s (that I bought this morning at 7:45... I’m prescient - knowing that XM would have a drinking thread) mixed with fresh brewed Ice tea and lemonade.

2. Broccoli and shells from the Sunday’s at Moosewood cookbook- easy but healthy and yummy with some crusty sourdough.

3.(the first) I can barely remember last week much less over 30 years ago so I’ll offer up last year’s commencement. I was driving a golf cart around the concourse of the Big House making grandparents happy by offering the best  gate to portal service known to mankind.

3. (the second) nothing planned, so same thing I do every weekend, mountain bike and gaze at my navel.

4.Thou shall not engage in political discussion with one’s cohabitants ( who thou hast been cooped up with much too long as of late) it shall’st get you nowhere

(Nice writing xm ... you’re wasting your talents pursuing legal endeavors; take up creative writing or some such minimally lucrative endeavor {with a little pro bono work on  special occasions}).

24 more days of no beer. I made the choice to go beer-less for 30 days. Why?

Two-hearted ale and a gorgeous pan of spaghetti squash lasagna, every bi as good as its pasta brother.

my commencement coincided with Robin Fleming’s retirement as UM prez. Wintertime grad, so I got to shake his hand as he was leaving Hill.

Rattle-canning patio furniture this weekend, probably squeeze in a nice motorcycle ride, too.

Thanks for sharing and caring, XM

Tonight was leftovers/frozen dinners for the family. I've made it my mission to make sure no leftovers get left over. Everything gets eaten before I cook something new. Tomorrow, we feast! Salmon and skirt steak on the grill. I also have chicken tenders which I'm either going to coat with bread crumbs and fry or make shredded chicken chili nachos. It's our dog's 13th birthday on Monday so I'm going to bake him a birthday cake for the humans to eat. At least that's the plan. As for drinking, I haven't had a drop of alcohol since this whole thing started. I only drink socially so without any legit socializing, I'm fine with my ever-present diet coke.

1: Heady Topper.

2: Making Pequod’s copycat pizza. Just took it out of the oven.

3: Drove by some houses on my way home today celebrating their graduating high school seniors.  Kinda stuck with me today.

3: Finishing remodeling one of the bathrooms tomorrow and hanging out with the wife and baby.

After getting in my daily 5k walk tonight, I think I’ll be grabbing a M43 or two.

No great plans for the weekend.  We were supposed to be in Boise today to visit my daughter for the weekend and then off to southwest Utah to hike some slot canyons (Staircase Escalante area) and then cap the trip off with a few days in Vegas.  Maybe next year, I guess.   Sure won’t be traveling internationally until there’s a vaccine.

Sunday dinner will feature filet mignon with cranberry-Gorgonzola sauce.  Looking forward to that.

2014 Goose Island Bourbon County.

Turkey paninis with Campbells chicken noodle soup with apple strudel for desert.

One of my sons has a Zoom piano recital on Sunday.  Should be . . . interesting.

Scored big. Sports bar down the road has $8 growlers! Got a growler of KY Bourbon Barrel Ale. They forgot to put in my pizza order so they knocked that off my bill and gave me a free pint to go. Pizza, growler, pint for less than $10 (originally $30 and still tipped 100% - my Friday tradition during quarantine)

My friend from Cali sent me a surprise package of coffee from a local roaster.

Naturally I poured out all the beans like a kid looking for the secret decoder ring in a cereal box. Alas, there was no prize.

Delicious coffee though.

The weather is supposed to be nice tomorrow, so I think we're going to spend the day at Stony Creek.

I only know 3 things right now.

1. Everybody seems to be able to agree that this new disease is novel..

2. Somehow that's literally the only thing health experts, authorities, and the press can agree on..

3. I'm drinking a manhattan and listening to the Cranberries, because Dolores was fucking magical, and vulnerable artists like her always feel the most powerful.

Pints of Weihenstaphen Beer.

It's not that they advertise themselves as being the oldest brewery in the world.  It's not that.

It's not because I am an elitist, and I may be. But in full disclosure, I drive a truck with 250,000 miles and a car with 250,000 miles, depending on the weather.

It is partially because of the German Bier Purity Law of 1516.  As stated prior, it's a law about bier older than USA.

Those pints of beers undergo a precise final preparation process.  There is a special device that uses the physics and heat transfer properties of gas at different pressures to cool the Beer to a desired temperature.  Some refer to it as the old freezer from my house that I moved to the shed of football watching which I have dubbed, quite originally, "the Mancave."  But I call this freezing box the "treasure box of joy."  No wait, that was what I called my high school girlfriend.  I digress.

I have a defined process for my pints.  I take pre-cooled pints and place them strategically in the discharge of the cooled air in this yet to be named box of freezing.  It is important to ensure the neck of the bottle is full of liquid.  It must be placed upside down for the cooling process.  You do not want the coldest part of the bottle to be the neck, as the beer may freeze upon pouring.  I also place a beer glass in said cold air. Yes, I am elitist, I drink it from a glass.

Like grilling, this cooling process is not precisely timed.  It has to be feel based in between games of ping pong with the kids, throwing a ball for the dog, writing political arguments on Mgoblog....  The closer it is to just barely freezing in the cold glass upon the pour, the better.  Often after too many beers the triple point is crossed and I have to quickly drink the expanding frozen beer upon opening.  This should be avoided.

I can not divulge more at this time, but let's just say I have perfected this over decades of watching Michigan football.  And yes, while I may have once been known for drinking 30 packs of Schlitz, I have since refined my tastes.

Judge me as you will, yea scoundrels and low life's.  Drinking a perfectly cold German Beer is worth your scorn.

It's not about yer guns, yer money or yer beer.  Being an American is about yer ideas and way of living. And we won't perish by your media echo chambers, this I swear.

Purity, smearity!

I almost reached for a leftover-from-icefishing Hamm's and instead chose a Founders "Unraveled" IPA when decided to find and open XM's thread.

A little birdie had hinted earlier that this thread would be posted; I chose to get a dozen miles in on my bike first before enjoying this thread and a cold one.

(Truth be told, though, the Krauts know their stuff when it comes to bier.  Can't wait til Red Flannel Brewing reopens their biergarten [is that a word?] for the summer!)

1) Gin and Tonic and feeling supersonic

2) Brats and an assortment of grilled veggies on a gas grill

3) No memories  of institution graduating, but I do remember when I was a toddler taking a bath in the kitchen sink. Eventually graduated to taking a shower

3) I think cutting my dad's grass tomorrow is on the list. Somehow my brother did not secure a lawn service for him in all his recent free time, so there's that.

4) Give me Liberty....

2) Spaghetti cooked on a camp stove at our family camping-in-place activity.
3) Hike tomorrow and maybe get the tractor ready to cut some grass though it is not very tall yet.
4) Ready for the blog to return to this full time.

Unfortunately, I am not imbibing this evening. My wife and I got tested for Covid today and there's an increasing likelihood I have it. When I asked my doctor for the order, I thought I was being paranoid, given that I was only experiencing fatigue, some nausea, and occasional headache. This evening has been more difficult. I am definitely fighting something off. I am on zinc, Vitamin-C, and Ta1 peptides to give my immune system lots of ammunition. If I have the virus and this is as bad as it gets, I will count my blessings. The fear of what may yet come is something I'm still grappling with.

My sister-in-law, who's in her 50's and otherwise healthy, had it. She described hers as fever and flu-like symptoms that lasted for about four days. She did get tested to confirm. She thinks her kids brought it back from NY when they come home pre-lockdown to ride this thing out. They were all sick to varying degrees, nothing serious, and so they assume they all had it. Take care of yourselves, and hopefully you'll only have to endure mild symptoms.

If I do have it, what it tells me is that any attempts to avoid it are probably futile, at least in places where there is community spread. We have been observing all of the recommended precautions and still it wasn't enough.

Knew the OP was xtra before I even clicked on it ... let’s goooo

1.  Downed a 6-pack of Oberon (makes me think fondly of my home ... Michigan) and now on to Rogue Dead Guy, Lagunitas IPA (classic) and Labatt Blue light.  Bloody Mary, with Tito’s, tomorrow morning.

2.  Undergrad.  Looked in the auditorium and immediately saw my mom.  Locked eyes.  Mouthed “thank you, I love you.”  Like to think she mouthed back “you’re my favorite child.”  Then went to work.  Just got super fucked up on beer, liquor, and weed after PhD.  And yes, I use an Oxford comma.

3a.  nothing tonight.  Usually drink beer and otherwise fast Friday nights.  Tomorrow I’m playing 18 at Boulder Creek GC (OH) which has an island green similar to TPC sawgrass.  Then coming home to grill as is customary.  I get to play golf and my wife gets a gourmet meal cooked for her after I get home.  She’s a sucker for roasted red potatoes and medium rare filet mignon.

3b. been at work daily.  Ive worked from home one day since I started in feb.  otherwise, 50 hours a week getting this lab started, operational, training young MS and BS degree biologists, writing SOPs, calibrating and maintaining equipment to GLP standards, teaching these kids A3 problem solving ... tip of the iceberg .... wheeeeee
