Ex-CMU Coach John Bonamego Consultant for Bowl Game. Longer-term implications?
I hope everyone is having a great time with their family and is getting plenty of awesome loot.
For your more solitary moments, I offer this 2-day-old news from Wolverines Wire of ex-CMU head coach John Bonamego. A quick review of his Wikipedia page shows that his most recent position coaching experience in the NFL was on special teams. Perhaps others will have more information on his strengths.

I often wonder if coaches like Harbaugh, Saban, Meyer et al bring in guys like this to learn how others do things and expose their staffs to different thinking.

Too bad AK did not come with him. That kid is special, look at what he has done to help CMU recruiting the last 2-3 seasons.
Ben Mac and Jay H are becoming great pals, and the future of Michigan football looks great.
Bowl game prep has been awesome, no news on Hill or Long, however with how much run Gray, Woods, and Ambry are getting I think the staff believes best case scenario one goes.
Merry Xmas
Cheers

Who is AK?

I'm guessing it's https://cmuchippewas.com/staff.aspx?staff=238

I was wondering the same thing...

From one Ghost to another Ghost, I always enjoy reading what GhostofJermainGonzalez posts.

You always have great updates - thanks for sticking around and continuing to provide information! And Merry Christmas!!!

Am I reading this right? The younger guys are prepping a lot so the staff thinks our best case scenario is that only one of Hill and Long return? That would stink. Maybe I didn’t interpret that correctly. Before the thought was it was looking likely that both would be back.
December 25th, 2018 at 12:02 PM ^
Initial rumors were both leaving. Both staying seems pretty unlikely.
December 25th, 2018 at 12:08 PM ^
I think you absolutely read it correctly. "Best case" is only 1 of Hill/Long leaves.
Where did you get the impression they were both staying, if I may ask? I never saw anything hinting that, aside from them actually sticking around to play in this game.

Lots of talk on the board lately with rumors that Hill was probably staying, someone cited a paywalled Sam Webb article about it using " rhyming names....not sure what thread. Yesterday's thread about Long not getting a draft eval had a lot of people's hopes up and UMBig11 said something about it being "60/40". Also, somebody in that thread claims to have gotten to know Long and said he would be back next year to finish his degree fwiw.
I was just getting used to the idea we may possibly get both back too (after assuming at least 1 was going to go)....so I was pretty disappointed to see ghostof had different thoughts.

I'm hoping they're just letting AK stretch his legs out and develop before they bring him back into the fold.

Wait, does this mean that J'Marick Woods is getting run at CB? Did you mean Gemon Green or Sims? Figured Woods would be Metellus' backup at SS. Feel like it's safe to say Metellus is coming back, right?
Thanks for the update though. Love getting this info anywhere we can.

Was wondering where Woods fit into the equation too
December 25th, 2018 at 10:24 PM ^
Serious question, but how would I judge CMU's recruiting outside of the rankings? The rankings show them as recruiting at the same level they always have.
December 25th, 2018 at 8:23 AM ^
Serious bone head. Not fully aware.
December 25th, 2018 at 3:05 PM ^
Blame it on the eggnog.
December 25th, 2018 at 8:32 AM ^
The guy was only ever a special teams coordinator and CMU hired him as a head coach? They deserved what they got with that one
December 25th, 2018 at 8:43 AM ^
But how where their special teams?

John Harbaugh says, "how do you like my Super Bowl ring?"
December 25th, 2018 at 10:20 AM ^
Urban Meyer says how you like my 3 CFB championships?
December 25th, 2018 at 12:11 PM ^
And my answer would be "We DON'T!"
December 25th, 2018 at 11:01 AM ^
John Harbaugh? Urbsn Meyer? Ever heard of them?
December 25th, 2018 at 11:46 AM ^
I think it means Don Brown is out, Partridge is going to DC, and this is the new ST coach.

Ever heard of John Harbaugh?

I guess the ravens did when they hired john harbaugh, too.

I doubt there's any chance he's coming to the staff. Coaches everywhere spend a week, or two, with other staffs all the time. I believe Saban even spent time with Rich Rod during summer break once upon a time. Its good to see different ways of doing things, different drills, get some pointers on specific plays or schemes... Gotta keep up with the Jones'!

Given that, I wonder if the short term coach is working for free. Sounds like they might be if they benefit from the extra exposure and keep their name in the news.
December 25th, 2018 at 9:35 AM ^
With McDaniels getting promoted there will be an opening for another analyst. It will be interesting to see who that might be.

Seth.

Hopefully the staff can get some special teams pointers from another expert. Lots of programs do this. I remember Saban just had Durkin come in to help out and it pissed everyone off.
Sorry for the extra long link.

Seems like a tryout for a special teams analyst gig.
Not a bad idea. If he can help with game planning/scouting that frees up time for CP and Jay in addition to any improvements he might bring.

What does a bowl game consultant do? Asking for a friend.

Consult on the bowl game at hand obviously
