ESPN: Hackett will decide Hoke's future; also, could be interested in AD long term?

Submitted by might and main on

ESPN reports Hackett will be the one to decide Hoke's future. Not really new news, except that it came from Hackett himself. Also, this:

Hackett, who recently retired from his position as the CEO of office furniture giant Steelcase, said he hasn't decided whether or not he would be interested in staying in the director's office on a permanent basis.

There is a reason you have -5290 MgoPoints.  Its comments like that.  What else is he going to say exactly?  That is the only answere he could possilby give.

Hoke is done after the OSU game and its been obvious that would be the cas for a while.

The difference with Hoke and Brandon is that people hated Brandon and he said/did things that embarrassed the school. Granted, the teams performance is embarrassing in the college football world but not to the University. If there was scandal or cheating or sanctions it would be different but I don't know if Schissel cares about wins and losses as much as another Pres. I think Hoke is gone but it's hard to fire nice people especially in circumstances like this. It's a possibility he's here next year. Not likely but still a possibility given the current climate.

What did I ignore? I haven't read all of his comments on football so I could be missing something. I was just saying that Hoke runs a clean program and the University brass probably appreciates that, especially after the drama of Brandon. Couple that with him being a person people like and you have a couple reasons not to fire the guy if you're the president.

He said that he expects us to complete as a "top ten institution in academics and athletics". One quote when talking about the future of the football program (in the context of a future coach) was "I have my mind on excellence". I do agree that he likely appreciates Hoke running a clean program and doing things the right way, and I didn't neg your previous comment fwiw.

what a win over OSU on the road would do IMO. If we were 8-5 in the scenario he paints, I think all bets are off on what would happen to Hoke. I would fire him no matter what happens in the next three games, but i think it's foolish to say that there is no circumstance that allows him to return.

A couple of points.

One, why should I be negged for that? It's simply my opinion this is a good sign for Hoke, whether or not people want him back. What's so awful?

Two, I had a decent amount of positive mgopoints until I came to the board one day to find I was suddenly several thousand negative. I can't imagine this was based on down votes from users, but more likely a decision by administration. I emailed them and also asked why in what I felt was the proper forum here. They have yet to offer an explanation.

but that's exactly what it was. Hackett made it clear he's not going to wait for a new AD to make a decision about Hoke. Uncertainty about that or waiting for a new AD when the timetable is unsettled would be good news for Hoke. This is not. It eliminates any chance that Hoke keeps his job by default.

Beyond that, when was the last time an AD announced he was going to decide a coach's fate and then didn't fire him? I can't remember any.

Too many posters here are straining for reasons to reach negative opinions. jmo

Did you read the article? He didn't "announce" it, he was asked and he answered. He's the AD, who else is going to make it? There's some doubt about if and when we will have another AD. He also had a lot of praise for Hoke and the staff.

This article does not read as a negative for Hoke to me. He clearly hasn't made up his mind.

If I could, I would neg you 5,000 times myself. In the 8 years I've been reading mgoblog, you're my third least favorite poster (behind Clarkie and Magnus). Your embracing of mediocrity, and belief Michigan has ever been elite in the modern era, is precisely what has ailed Michigan football in my lifetime, and sickens me frankly.

If Hackett can't get Harbaugh, I'd rather keep Hoke for another year and let the permanent AD deal with the search.  One more year of Hoke is better than three or four of somebody worse that Hackett picks on a hunch.

I've wanted Hoke gone for several years, but the next hire needs to be a home run.

I just don't get this line of thinking. Who is going to magically appear next year that isn't around now? It's going to be a regurgitation of the same names. After hoke and richrod no way they'd go for an up and coming coordinator or a one year MAC wonder

Totally disagree.  By saying that he'll decide Hoke's future, Hackett just told us that he's going to fire Hoke.  If he decided to keep Hoke, then the next AD could just come in and decide to fire him.  The only "decision" by Hackett that's relevant is a firing and Hackett just told us that he's making a relevant decision.

And that makes sense to me.  There's no reason to leave blood on the hands of the permanent AD, especially when so many people like and respect Hoke as much as they do.

He's basically a hitman who will weigh in on the permanent AD search.  I can't imagine he's making many serious long-term decisions for the athletic department beyond this.  So yeah... not bad compensation for what he's being asked to do.

Couldn't the opposite logic be applied here?  He's saying that he, Hackett, will make the decision.  He's an interim.  Since he doesn't know how long he'll be here, wouldn't that mean that he's likely going to make the decision sooner rather than later?  And if sooner, wouldn't that mean giving Hoke the axe after the season?  If he had it in him mind to keep Hoke, why wouldn't you offer him an extension now to help in recruiting?  So I say most 'tea leaves' suggest 'he gone'.

Moving forward, does the former Steelcase CEO and Michigan football player want the permanent athletic director job full time?

"I first have to talk with Kathy Hackett (my wife), about that, she's asked me the same thing," Hackett explained. "But in all seriousness, and people who know me know this is the way I work, the challenge right now -- and I'm so focused on that -- that's the question. Anything that follows that will follow that in a way that becomes absolutely clear.
