You know the drill - this is your thread for hot takes and brief musings about our special teams in our game against East Carolina.

Our kickers have huge shoes to fill.  The 50 yard field goal would have been good from 60,  Punt returns ok give the type of kicks dealt with.  Room for improvement all around.

Turner might be unpredictable all year. That 50 yarder was crushed dead center. 52 not even close. 50 yard practice shot was a duck that was barely far enough. Missed extra point and some others were iffy.  Looks like a #collegekicker to me

Robbins and Moody are gone so we knew there would be a step back. It was good to see a 50yd FG. Punt and kickoff returns were OK. Room for improvement. No glaring mistakes were made.

Was hoping this wasn't the case but kicking is going to be the #1 issue this year and be the most likely culprit for a potential loss. Not offense, defense or coaching. But not having a reliable kicker - that says something about Turner's performance that even with a 50 yard BOMB of a kick, his XPs were so wobbly no one feels good about him right now.

We've been spoiled.

Would have felt ok about Turner, even with the goofed xp; but that last kick - woof.

Oh well. Plenty of time to work things out. We're gonna need to make a kick at some point this season.

Other than that, no complaints. Doman looks fine. Kickoffs look fine. ST tackling looks good. Their punter was all over the place, so incomplete on punt returns.

Go Blue! Make those kicks!

Today I learned there's a guy named Jake Thaw on the roster....

and has been for years?

We got spoiled with Moody.  Quick review of 4th yr Turner career stats show he's 2-8 from 50+ & 14-20 from 40-49 so...... I expect we will be going for it on 4th and short alot if the FG is in that upper range.  Willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.  They must've seen something in him.

Thaw gave a lot of field position away with letting balls bounce, and then made a couple risky decisions to over compensate later. Turner has the leg but doesn't seem to be striking the ball consistently. IDK, it might be the hold?

With all due respect to the kid, Jake Thaw should never being a starting punt returner for Michigan. Ever. We did the same shit to open last season as well with Colesar in that role. It’s nonsense and a smack in the face to the importance of special teams.

Ebuka is returning punts for Ohio State. Bama always has a top WR or CB in that role. Rondale Moore when he was at Purdue. And on and on.

I’m not even saying it has to be a Wilson/Edwards/Corum, but for crying out loud don’t put a kid who would otherwise never sniff the field during meaningful snaps. If it’s addressed by the start of the conference opener, maybe it’s just a Harbaugh throwing the kid a bone type of thing, but I still can’t help but get annoyed.

Don’t like or understand Mullins as KR1 either. That better not last.

We obviously aren’t getting a Moody like performance this season, but we should have known that coming in. The key it to not need a Moody like performance this season.

stop it. there’s absolutely zero reason to think we don’t think special teams are important. on the contrary.  the excellence in special teams is a years-long success story that started before moody and robbins showed up. and you have no idea if this was the right approach, week one. maybe he looked more comfortable. maybe whoever you want muffed one a week in practice.  you don’t know.  and you’re basing this on…what?  three punt returns against a tomato can?

it “better not last?” or…what? lol.

not sure what that quote is supposed to prove, or how your response refutes it, or for that matter,  directly responds to it.

you want someone else, that’s fine. whatever.  you’re still basing your opinion on very little actual data.

and yeah - it would be great to find someone equal to the three greatest returners of the last 45 years on this roster, wouldn’t it?  maybe we could find them by sheer force of will.
