Dumb Gameday Questions

Submitted by Jeff M on

I'm attending my first UM football game tomororw since graduation, so hoped the board vets could help me with a few dumb questions about getting in. My experience is confined to walking from campus, and I was there during the RR years so I've blocked out about half the details through therapy / therapeutic drinking.

- Coming into Ann Arbor from the Detroit area, about what time does traffic start getting stupid?

-We're sitting in Section 2, behind the visitor sideline. That tends to still be concentrated with Michigan fans, right? We shouldn't expect any Rutgers jabronis?

- We're thinking about using Lyft/Uber rather than worry about parking. Any experiences with that? Considering road blockages, what's a logical place to set as a drop off?

-We're also considering coming in early and getting breakfast, but wasn't sure about options close to the stadium. Any recommendations? We have a slow walker in the group so we don't want to go to the far out staples Fleetwood, Broken Egg,  Angelos, etc.

Agree with the hard disagree.

I used it to get to the golf course main street entrance from the E William parking structure for the MSU game and neither the rate was bad nor was the traffic too bad (traffic is mostly from the lineto actually get into the golf course, the other lanes move quickly).

Used it one other time to get from student area to golf course and it was extremely cheap/quick.

And usually not much/any surge pricing before the game.

But cellular connectivity is a significant issue after the game for an hour or so. Your phone will have a hard time getting and maintaining a connection to request the UBER, and the drivers have issues as well. Plus, getting to a place both you & UBER can get to can be complicated.

Unless you plan on hanging out at a tailgate for 1-2hrs after the game, I would encourage you have alternate transportation after the game.

Once we just got our tailgate all setup and ready to go on the golf course and I crack open my first beer and am like FUCK I left the tickets at the hotel. Installed Uber set it up they picked me up outside the golf course took me to the Red Roof and then back probably only took around 30 minutes. This was around 8:30ish am for a 3:30 game.

Enjoy the game Go Blue!!!

Probably won't be many Rutger fans in attendance but if I remember correctly they're usually concentrated on the southeastern end zone corner, is it section 8? Even then, the ones that do make the game probably aren't the asshole fans. I've never bought breakfast in Ann Arbor before a game so I'd be no help in that one. Seems others have nailed you're other questions.

Welcome back!

Your seating should be fine.  I don't expect a lot of Rutgers fans to travel here.  UM offered another lot of tickets this week which means RU probably didn't sell their allotment.  Usually thier fans are pretty beat down, but they are on a 2 game win streak, so there is that.

You're going to have to walk - there is not a great way to get a ride close to the stadium unless you go at the crack of dawn.  There are restaurants at State and Packard, but again they will be pretty packed unless you go early.

I'm in the Alumni Band and have to be there at 0-dark-thirty.  There is never much traffic then.

with Mr. Yost exiled, 1) who's going to create the viewing threads tomorrow? and 2) if, God forbid, things are not going well at halftime, who's going to save us with a second half thread?

Possible taunts for a Rutgers jabroni:

  • "2014!"
  • "We hafta beatcha in the first quah-tah cuz we got dat ting danight."
  • "Springsteen!!"
  • "We just totally F***ED your strength of schedule!"
  • "Go Bucks!"
  • "Bon Jovi!!"
  • "Touchdown?  I got your f**in touchdown right heah."
  • "We still get credit for Greg Schiano."
  • "You'll probably win this game, Michigan.  But just think how embarrassing it will be if you lose."

One transportation option for you might be to park at Briarwood Mall for free, and then pick up the shuttle across the street at the Kensington Hotel. I think it’s only $1.50 per person each way, and you’ll get dropped off/picked up in front of Crisler. Note that if your slow walker has issues standing for a long time, there can be a long wait for the shuttle after the game depending on a bunch of factors (how close the game is, how bad the weather is, if the cops are determined to let every car out of the Crisler lot while the shuttle sits in traffic down the road, etc.).

I don't think there are many breakfast places too close to the stadium. Best bet would be to go somewhere near Main Street but closer to E William/Hill, but none of those places would really be that much closer than the Broken Egg. Could also just grab something from the Pastry Peddler on Packard.

I would say be in A2 by 9:30 or you will be in annoying traffic. Section 2 is almost all Michigan fans regardless of opponent. You may have a few scattered, but prolly not much with RU. I would park as close to stadium as possible if you don't mind spending the money. If money's an issue park on the street east of Crisler in the neighborhood. Breakfast, honestly I would hit up a drive thru on way in. Nothing really worthwhile too close if you have a slow walker. My two cents. Hopemit helps Or gives you some ideas. Go Blue!

OP: "Coming into Ann Arbor from the Detroit area, about what time does traffic start getting stupid?"

My answer: Avoid I-94. Approach from the NE (M-14). There will still be traffic; it just won't be as bad as on 94.

Even though it doesn't make inherent sense for me as I live right along the I-94 corridor, this is actually how I approach town on game days and I would recommend this too. Actually, even getting off M-14 and Ford and taking Plymouth-Ann Arbor into the north side of town, then finding a way to drop south towards the stadium....that works too most weeks. A lot would depend on where you wanted to be in relation to the stadium though.

Here's my dumb Gameday question:  Isn't it rather ironic that College Gameday is sponsored by the Home Depot, which is constanly pitching ideas and motivation to home do-it-yourself-ers?  I can't think of anything less productive and do-it-yourself-er-er than watching a 3 hour college football preview show that takes place on Saturday morning when no games are on...you know, prime do-it-yourself project time.

Honestly, you couldn't pay me to uber/lyft on Gameday in Ann Arbor.

If I were you, I'd park downtown in one of the parking garages (flat $5 rate, at least in the new underground library lot between 5th and division just south of Liberty), enjoy A2 a bit/campus, walk down, then walk back up downtown after the game, hit up a restaurant and then head out once traffic has subsided.

Come in on 14 then take the Miller Rd exit to come in the back way. Less traffic getting in, and parking is available in those neighborhoods usually.
