A stud DT would be nice.   As far as Netori Johnson is concerned, he was recruited primarily as an O lineman at UGA.  He couldn't see the field so they switched him to D line, where he didn't get much playing time either.  In other words, he sounds like a possible upgrade for us.

Obviously it's going to be tough to find someone in the transfer portal who is totally fine coming in to be a depth player.

If I were Michigan's staff in this precarious situation, I would be trying to identify a guy that is looking to continue his education at graduate school, or perhaps would be interested in coaching after his college career and see if there are any administrative roles I could offer him after his last season of eligibility. With McCarthy coming in, you're probably looking at losing one of Milton or McNamara to the transfer portal. Villari I can't imagine is going to be competent in year two, so if you can find a guy like that who you don't necessarily expect to come in and compete for the starting spot, but can provide some depth and continue his academic career that's probably your best bet.

All this to say, the roster management in the program right now is a complete mess.

Deserved or not, Villari does possess a scholarship, which means as of today (Dec 24), there will be 4 scholarship QBs on the 21 roster, alll with enough eligibility to maybe outlast Harbaugh? If you bring in a transfer, do you think UM could hang onto Milton (no way) and McNamara (maybe not)? Is bringing in a transfer worth the possibility of ending up with a QB room of: transfer, Villari and McCarthy?

One thing I've been thinking to this point is the way the quarterback group has evolved, it looks like is bound for some turbulence ahead.

Basically what's played out this year is your Rs. Freshman depth player has outplayed your Rs. Soph starter, who was thrust into the role after your expected starter sat the season out because of clashes with the coaching staff.

Now you have a 5* freshman coming in behind a projected starter who is going to retain his Rs. freshman eligibility which most likely means Milton is gone.

So now, you have 2 guys on the roster with the same amount of eligibility, but two years of experience a part.

One guy has game day experience, and mostly has played well at the college level. The other guy came here to be a multi-year starter and isn't going to be keen sitting behind a QB that has the same amount of eligibility as he does. The other guy isn't going to be keen to losing his job to bluechip recruit.

So once again, something has gotta give, and it's entirely reasonable to have yet another transfer. It will probably be tough to bring in a 5* QB in the 2022 class, behind the 5* QB you just brought in this season, so you're probably looking for a guy who's intangibles you like, but is going to need some development.

Problem is, you only have 2 scholarship QB's on the roster, one of who is Villari. You're going to have to see what you can find in the portal, but problem is in this scenario, you have what should be a high level starter, and then absolutely nothing behind him.

All this is to say, we're looking down the barrel of a roster management nightmare that quite honestly was probably completely avoidable if the staff hadn't meddled with the QB room, played favorites, but told their players the program runs as a meritocracy.

Who is going to grad transfer unless he's a starter?

Going to be hard to find someone to come in to be a backup and I don't see any starters out there.

Due to the Portal, QB depth charts are going to be thin now and forever.

Best we could do is find a kid to bring in and redshirt. But that's pretty much a waste of a scholarship.

Better off getting an awesome walk-on program going.

Really? Because we have too many Heisman contenders in our current QB room? I'd love to know which quarterback on our roster is you think is an All-Big Ten level player next year?

I'll never understand this board's irrational aversion to transfer quarterbacks. Our QB room is bleak. We have exactly 3 scholarship QBs on our roster - two returning starters who are in the bottom of the Big 10 East, and one true freshman.

Putting aside stargazer fantasies about JJ being the next Trevor Lawrence ready to take over the starting job from day 1, there's nothing on our roster that could give a rational person the impression that we are all set at quaterback next year.  That's before accounting for potential transfers AND the inevitable injury to the starter that seems to occur almost every year.

We almost had to resort to sending a walk-on QB in to start against Ohio State this year and people are complaining about going after transfer QBs?? I feel like im taking crazy pills.

You might be taking crazy pills. Cade showed plenty this past year that he could be a very good QB and if he improves a little bit by next year will probably be one of the better QB’s in the conference. We are bringing in a 5 star QB that by all accounts is a star in the making. If you need to go deeper then that on your depth chart your probably in trouble and this is assuming Joe leaves which we don’t know what he will do.
This team more DT’s and CB’s then it need to waste a scholie on possibly a third string QB that has a good chance of never playing

Next year Upshaw, Ojabo, Newburg, Morris, & McGregor should be ready to provide depth to Vilain & Hutchinson, but there is no help in the 2021 class.  And, we really need Hutch to come back and Vilain to develop into more of a pass rush threat.  We probably also need Mazi to develop in the middle so the ends can actually get after the QB.  I think the Jeter/Kemp ship has sailed, but Hinton may still be able to continue to incrementally develop, although I doubt he'll ever live up to his 5-star profile.  Who knows, maybe a new d-line coach can develop these guys a bit more than Nua.

This year might not be a reflection on the talent of players.

Consider how horribly Penn State did as well.  You think Penn State is a crappy team with crappy players and crappy coaches?  I do not.  I think that they are probably a good team with a lot of talented guys and decent coaches that got caught in a highly unusual disaster of a year.  I don't think this year is predictive of Penn State's future.

Looks good? These are the same guys that sucked this year.

Lots of guys don't look great in their first snaps of experience.  All of them are young players with reasonable expectations to improve.  Jeter & Kemp are maxed out based on their age and years in the program.  The rest have a reasonable expectation to improve, particularly Smith, Hinton, Ojabo, & McGregor.  Morris & Upshaw may turn out not to the have the ability needed.  This is merely an assumption based on their recruiting profiles.  But, the two younger ends (Ojabo & McGregor) and the two younger DTs (Smith & Hinton), all of whom are 4 and 5-star players in years one or two, should have reasonable expectations to improve.

He did play some this year and I thought he looked OK.  He clearly has the size and physical ability.  His problem seems to be knowing what to do.  I think he'll still develop into a good DT.  I like him to be a breakout player next year.  I think he has more potential than Hinton.  If both stick around for 4 years that could be a position of strength in 2022.
