If Die hard is a Christmas movie, so is Lethal Weapon and Blow.  I mean they both have a Christmas Tree at some point in the movie.

Love it.  Watch it every Christmas.  The ladies cringe that there are about 150 F bombs but other than that great movie.  They don't make action flicks that good anymore.

Check out Nakatomi plaza when in LA.

who could disagree with this?   nothing celebrates the birth of Christ quite like blowing up nakatomi plaza.

by corrollary, if die hard is, then lethal weapon most definitely is.

Absolutely it is.

My question is what threshold must be crossed to go from "movie with Christmas elements" to "Christmas movie"? Example. Iron Man 3 and Shazam! both take place during Christmas. Between them you have Christmas music prominently throughout, ornaments as improvised weapons, a Christmas themed beauty pageant, the funniest movie Santa in years, a Christmas decorated mall, a Christmas carnival, and feel good themes including finding home and family. I've never heard either referred to as a Christmas movie so what threshold have they not crossed that Die Hard has?

We watch it on Christmas like a fair number of folks. Actually, we adopted a tradition of watching "Spaceballs" on Christmas Eve, even though the movie has nothing to do with any holiday, so I can't really talk.

Good movie, but NOT a Christmas movie.  You guys that think so are just being argumentative!  (I'm not an argumentative kinda guy, so it's not my fault...)  Its a really good action movie that happens to take place at a Christmas party - big deal.  I mean, The Wedding Singer takes place at weddings - is it a movie about getting married?  No!

Yes, all those things and more are true. Now do this: Take every one of those references out. Does that change the plot one bit?

Nope. This movie (which I love) could easily take place at a 4th of July party, McClane could write "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" on the shirt, and they could play the "Star Spangled Banner" over the end credits. Nothing would really change.

Die Hard is one of the greatest action movies of all time, but its setting at Christmas is incidental. The plot doesn't depend on it.

I see your perspective.  So if you apply the same criticism to "It's a Wonderful Life" (IAWL), you will come to the same conclusion, even though IAWL is widely considered a Christmas movie!

IAWL is partially set around Christmas, just like Die Hard, but is mostly about George's life and his financial crisis and issues with the bank.  There's not even as much Christmas music in IWAL vs. Die Hard.  To top it off,  the basic message of IAWL is essentially, "suck it up and be happy with what you have even if though were screwed out of something unfairly by assholes."  However, IAWL does deal with the Christmas themes of depression and suicidal ideation, so I guess that makes sense.

Take the plot out of IAWL and stick at elsewhen on the calendar and it still works with the same ideas--I'm not saying it's a bad movie at all and I think it's got a very powerful message at the end.  But to apply the same criteria and call IAWL a classic Christmas movie and in the same breath state that Die Hard is not, is at the very least disingenuous and most likely apocryphal.

I have spoken.

Edit to add:  F*ck xOSU.  Go Tigers.  Beat Bama.  Etc.

Whatever your thoughts on whether or not Die Hard should be a Christmas movie, in this day an age, it absolutely is one.  It's speaks to the zeitgeist more than anything else.  No other action movie (No, not even YOU, Jingle All the Way!) has really cemented itself in Christmas pop culture like Die Hard has.

So whatever your opinion in the matter, (and you're not wrong, either way) pop culture dictates that it's a Christmas movie and it's likely here to stay.

Exactly. I was going to say the same thing...it shouldn't be, but it is.

Speaking if Jingle All The Way...

1. Home Alone

2. Grinch (original cartoon)

3. Jingle All The Way

4. Die Hard

5. Charlie Brown

6. The Holiday

7. The Santa Clause

8. Elf

9. Four Christmases

10. Polar Express

HM: Best Man Holiday

Don't @ me. And miss me with your Christmas Vacation and Christmas Story...I have my 10 and there is nothing anyone can so to change my mind about my top 8. I've got all my bases covered, with this.

And yes The Holiday and yes it is 10x better than Love Actually. Also, Bad Santa was good, but not one I repeat. Same with the silly Office Christmas Party and The Night Before movies.

My question to the group is...is Toy Story a Christmas movie? If so...bye bye Polar Express...I only watch you every Christmas Eve to fall asleep. Works every time.

(Trading Places moves in as well if I'm allowed to call that a Christmas Movie...Four Christmases isn't great...it's just always on when nothing else is so I enjoy it every year).

I'm out. Merry Christmas, everyone!!!

+1 for The Holiday.  Excellent movie you can watch with anybody from 8 to 80.  Great music, too.  My wife and I used part of the score to enter the hall at our wedding (the part where Cameron Diaz gets out of the cab and runs back to the house).  Her idea....I promise.

Merry Christmas!

One of my new favorites is Green Book.  Since it ends with a traditional Italian Christmas Eve 7 Fishes dinner, does this qualify as a Christmas movie?  Actually experienced the modern day version at my in-laws last night.
