A DETROIT penalty
Arright it's been 5 days but last night Huard brought it up and just now Danielson mentioned it and earlier there was another announcer who I can't recount - all referenced the ref butcher job on the Lions. That is 3 different set of announcers on COLLEGE games that I happened to be watching at the time in the past 15 hours. If there is more please feel free to add.
We (Lions fans and yeah I get this is a Michigan board) need to own this and run with it. Right now the iron is hot and everyone in the country is aware. Lets refer to every butchered call as a "Detroit Flag", or a "Detroiter" (for non flags). We need to embrace this and control the narrative and get a Merriam-Webster entry. You know what a NY style pizza slice is. You know what a Philly Cheesesteak is. From here on you will know what a "Detroit Flag" is.
Realize that doesn't roll off the tongue so open to suggestions.

Motown miscue?
Dtown detour?
Doesn't sound any better

Okay.

Ain't no penalty like a Deetroit penalty!
October 19th, 2019 at 5:13 PM ^
Cause Detroit penalties nevah stop.

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?

Germans? Pearl Harbor?
October 19th, 2019 at 5:05 PM ^
This post is a whiny take...
Lets refer to every butchered call as a "Detroit Flag",
... and about as stupid as people calling French fries "Freedom" fries by way of comparison.
Yes, the refs blew calls. That's why you don't put the game in the hands of the refs. If Detroit doesn't trade TDs for FGs on Monday night, they win that game -- plain and simple.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:10 PM ^
The Lions made the NFL define wtf a catch is (after losing a game due to bad interpretation of the rules).
The Lions lost a playoff game due to horrific officiating.
I could go on but I won't because...... after all you are the Stig
October 19th, 2019 at 5:21 PM ^
The Lions lost a playoff game due to horrific officiating.
You're better than that. That was 1 play. 1 damn play. The game is 60 minutes long. What's your excuse for the other 59:50 in the game?!?!?!
October 19th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
So refs have zero impact on outcomes of games. Got it. Even the fucking NFL and NCAA disagree with that.
October 19th, 2019 at 6:00 PM ^
It's not that they have zero impact. It's that if the Lions really were good enough to win those games they would have won them regardless of how much the refs effed everything up. That's what good teams do. Do the Patriots, Chiefs, Packers, 49ers, or any other team that has a history of being good at football complain about refs? No, they win the damn game.
October 19th, 2019 at 6:18 PM ^
oh fuck this take! most nfl game point spreads are under 5; looks like 3 games this week. a bad call can easily switch a game from win to loss; especially due to timing.
hell, dudes on this blog did a study of that osu debable a few years ago and determined like a 20 point swing due to bad calls. even if there is some bias there, try overcoming that shit on the road vs a top 10 team.
and osu ain't ever going to complain, because they typically benefit from the calls. remember almost no holding calls on them for like two years?
October 19th, 2019 at 6:33 PM ^
I like how the teams you listed are typically the teams who get calls in their favor all the time...
October 19th, 2019 at 5:53 PM ^
It was not just one play. You are trivializing it as it fits your narrative that Lions should have done more. NFL blowouts are rarer than close games (no data but just watching games it feels that way)
October 19th, 2019 at 6:03 PM ^
No shit, it's been far more than 1 play, it's been like 6 games lost because of flagrantly obvious missed calls.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:12 PM ^
I used to wonder why so many people had a beef with you, but now it's pretty clear you put in actual effort to try to troll people on a college sports blog message board. That's pretty pathetic.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:16 PM ^
"a beef"? Good to see that 90 year olds are joining the fray.

October 19th, 2019 at 5:16 PM ^
Actually, PATHETIC can probably contain, in its definition, someone who keeps track of internet beefs.
Try Italian Beefs at Portillos in Chicago instead.
October 19th, 2019 at 6:25 PM ^
good stuff. i couldn't believe there was a portillo's stand at the illini game. And they now sell beer inside the stadium!
October 19th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
The only beef I have is with WD... for him mocking the institution I busted my ass to get into and graduate from.
Additionally, you think you do but you don't know what the word trolling is. Tolling is someone who posts just create noise.
YOU disagreeing with my post does NOT make ME a troll.
My post didn't do that... anyone who has played sports at a high level knows you don't put games in the refs hands... you take care of your own business. Rather Lions fans have been crying about refs for 60 years.
October 19th, 2019 at 6:05 PM ^
He's saying you're either a troll a total idiot......I guess it's the latter.
October 19th, 2019 at 7:26 PM ^
You graduated from OSU or Stae?
October 19th, 2019 at 5:20 PM ^
Sorry but the Lions put the game in the hands of its defense. They did what they needed to do to win the game. By your logic they're not allowed to win by a minimum of 1 point. They have to win by more than one point because they're playing an opponent and the refs.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:24 PM ^
You are right. Also, if the Lions had won the game 80-0 the refs would not have been an issue either.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:26 PM ^
Yep, need to go 7-7 on scoring drives with TD’s every time to win football games...another stupid take
October 19th, 2019 at 5:30 PM ^
Such a shitty take, man. Yeah, don't blame the refs... Just.. be better! Come on. Like Stafford didn't want those 3rd down conversions. They're fighting hard and playing well and they got boned. Theyre trying to turn the reputation of the franchise around and the refs aren't letting them. It's bullshit.
October 19th, 2019 at 6:37 PM ^
And with this post of yours I make a mental note to remember your handle and never respect another take of yours again.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
But you gotta say it like the Pistons announcer-
DEEEEEEEEE-TROIT PENNNN-AL-TY!!!!
October 19th, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
I don't like it, it gives the impression that Detroit is the problem, not the fucking incompetent refs
October 19th, 2019 at 5:07 PM ^
Detroit has enough negative shit associated with it.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:11 PM ^
Well earned.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:12 PM ^
I’m still waiting for ownership, management, coaches or somebody to stick up to the NFL for all the dedicated fans that buy the overpriced tickets parking souvenirs and what but nothing.
October 19th, 2019 at 6:26 PM ^
This. This right here. Someone in the Lions organization needed to take a fine and absolutely blast the NFL and the officiating. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Martha & the Fords passed it down to everyone in the organization to keep their mouths shut and not upset their cash cow.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:14 PM ^
Here is the Problem: EVERY fan base thinks the referees are out to get them
Not the team, not the players, but Them
So you can try to patent this, but Others will be out there saying, HEY that is NOT a Detroit Penalty, or another instance of Michigan getting jobbed out of ther 98th consecutive national championship--remember when that happened to Us? Only, it was worse, because it happened to Us
October 19th, 2019 at 5:14 PM ^
I like it. I'm tired of Lions fans going quietly into the night. We need to stand up against this shit. Maybe it will make refs think twice before fucking the Lions
October 19th, 2019 at 5:16 PM ^
If your goal is so the Lions get favorable calls going forward, then I'm all in.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:18 PM ^
Detroit fans have reached a new low.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:19 PM ^
Gary Danielson played quarterback for the Lions for a long time, so it's not crazy that he would be aware of such an event.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:23 PM ^
Yes, because Detroit is the only NFL team that has ever gotten jobbed by bad calls.
October 19th, 2019 at 6:06 PM ^
Only team where someone has posted this at least once in each of the last 6 years.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:31 PM ^
October 19th, 2019 at 5:48 PM ^
I guess you missed the part of my post that said that 3 different announcers on college games in the last 15 hours keep bringing it up. You know .......the first part. So - they're not letting it go. That was pretty much the point.
October 19th, 2019 at 5:31 PM ^
Be sure to also refer to every short person you see as ‘JT’.

A Fannie Flagg?
Gene Rayburn to the Match Game panelists, "In the pregame meeting the Head Linesman instructed his referee crew: ' It's just the Detroit Lions. Let's blank them over' "
