Desert Island Question: You Get to Bring One Band's Music - Who is it?

Submitted by xtramelanin on September 6th, 2020 at 8:40 PM

Mates,

Simple enough premise.  You have a premonition that you are going to be ship wrecked on a desert island (assume food and beverages and a never-ending music playing ability also available...).  However, you only have time to download one musician or band's work before you have to abandon ship.

1.  Who is that band/singer/composer that you will listen to until the rescue party comes in X years?

2.  Bonus points - if you get to pick one genre of music, what type is that?  Classical to country, rhapsody to rap, what do you choose?

Jimmy eat world. Had the Futures cd in my truck for two straight years in college and trips to Michigan Tech are long. Never got sick of it.

Alternative music is the genre I like.

Tough question. Since I’m on an Island, I’d pick Bob Marley. I would miss a lot of other bands though. Tom Petty has enough 70s through 90s range that he is another pick for durability.

I would pick the genre of Jazz. You should check out Donald Bird, “Here I Am” best Jazz son I’ve heard, and that is saying a lot. Bonus, he is from Detroit!

I'd go with Marley as well, most likely, but Toots and the Maytals are up there too. Just very uplifting, feel good music, and suits the island vibe pretty well.

Lots of good latin stuff too. Tough choice for sure.

On genre; would probably have to go with Rock, as it's such a broad category.

Jimmy Buffet sucks, I've tried but just can't stand his music other than that one decent song.

I thought of Toots and Bob as well, for the same reasons. Given an actual desert island scenario, I'd want something super chill (I love me some hard rock but every day on the beach? Nah. I'd rather go Motown/R&B)

Bob's music has more emotional range and depth, but even the happiest songs seem to have a bit of melancholy in them. Toots can be super joyful like you said, I'd probably go with those guys.

FYI Toots has been in hospital lately, hope he pulls it out, the man is an underappreciated legend!

Is this really a question? The obvious answer is the Michigan Marching Band playing "Varsity". Have any more poignant lyrics ever been written in the history of writing lyrics?

"Varsity! We're for you!

Here for you!

To cheer for you!

We have no fear for you,

Oh, Varsity"

Wow!  Sheer perfection!

They were a few years before my time but I had often heard that Traffic was the greatest rock band of all time. Been spending a lot of time with them this summer on Pandora and am beginning to come around to that conclusion.

genre: 70’s pop. 70’s on 7 is number 1 on my Sirius/XM dial because it is family friendly and frankly, I know all the words. I am constantly amazed at the breadth and artistry from this period (though I am sure similar arguments could be made for most any decade)
