Oh wow, nevermind. I didn't know that either. Just knew that he was doing a fantastic job at Boston College. Knowing that, I agree the fit would definitely be questionable. Barry Odom (Mizzou's DC) could also be an option. Mizzou had a pretty good defense this year and he's fairly young and probably seeking a jump to a head coaching position.

This is so hilariously terrible of a take I don't know what to do with it.

NO ONE with any career ambitions should take the Maryland or Rutgers jobs. You are resigned to nothing but mediocrity at best. They are deadend jobs for subpar candidates who are coaching out the string or have failed at multiple stops and are looking for a final shot.

If you were going to take a Big Ten job, you take it in the other division, which is wide open year after year after year. At Maryland/Rutgers, your aspirations are 5th place every year. Its an awful landing spot for a young guy like Durkin and if he's at all smart he will turn it down. It'd be idiotic as he would be doomed to failure and likely set his career back as a head coach for years to come.

I should note, I'm not just saying this because I want him to stay. If he was offered the Illinois job, I'd say go for it.

That's such BS. Just because a team is 5th (or worse) in a division now doesn't mean that will always be the case. OK St used to be an after thought in the Big 12, Baylor even worse, and the right coach has made them real contenders. Same for Mississippi St or Washington St, and even though I don't see either of them making the leap any time soon, those types of jobs can be great stepping stones for an elite job. Or it could be a way to make 3 million a year for a handful of years, which isn't a bad reason either.

With Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and Penn State all playing in the same division, AND raiding your recruiting grounds, I think Maryland is fool's gold.  Let an up and comer go there, a la Dino Babers or PJ Fleck.  Young enough to not care about getting fired yet brash enough to endure the constant beat downs.

that situation with Smart and Saban worked well becuase they are both defensive minds like Dantonio and Narduzzi.  I don't think it's a coincidence that Harbaugh's offense's have done well because he's had Drevno with him most of the time.  It's been a turnstyle at OC at Bama since Jim McElwain left

While he and Harbaugh were still firmly in place in San Francisco. I was filming something with him and he knew I was a Michigan grad and told me a number of great Harbaugh anecdotes. I asked him a bunch of stuff about Michigan and the 2011 search and talked to him about his career trajectory and whatnot. I came away from the convo thinking this guy is an NFL guy who wants to be an NFL Head Coach.

I don't think he'll leave the NFL for a lateral move. I could see him leaving for Head Coaching opportunity, but I would assume that would be merely a stepping stone to get him into the league as a HC.

Yeah, I'll pass.

I want someone who can stop these hyper spreads like OSU and IU.

If you include the 2011 game which we won, OSU is averaging 37.2 PPG against us that last 5 years.

Indiana is averaging 32.7 PPG in the last 3 meetings and that's if you include the Zander Diamont game last year where they only put up 10. Take that one out when they have an actual QB and it's much worse: 44 PPG.

Good DL coach that has done a great job with the DL this year.

Over his career, Mattison has been one of the best, most accomplished defensive coordinators around. The only spread teams that really gave Michigan trouble defensively under Mattison were Ohio State and South Carolina--both of which had superior athletes. Durkin didn't do any better against OSU than Mattison. If Mattison had stayed at Baltimore instead of coming to Michigan when Hoke wanted him, people around here would be thrilled to get him now.

Jim Leavitt might be the answer. He was able to shut down Rich Rod's top notch WV teams. In 2006 he beat 7th ranked WV 24-19 and in 2007 beat them 21-13 when they were ranked #5. Maybe someone can do an in-depth reasearch on him, but he was a pretty good coach at South Florida. He was also Harbaugh's LB coach in San Francisco.
