Dantonio leaving MSU in 2 yrs? Discuss.

Submitted by Chester Cheetah on
Dantonio is doing a rather fine job at MSU regarding changing the culture and attitude of the players and fans (some for the better, some for the worse). I believe his coaching talents could be used elsewhere, and other football programs would be willing to pay him more than MSU does for these certain services. Does anyone else think that after a couple more "MSU-successful" years, he would be heading out to coach someplace else? For example, if Lane Kiffin or Gene Chizik don't work out at their respective schools, do you think Marky D. would head south? Or any other possibilities? Discuss.

I dont see him going anywhere for a while. He just doesnt seem to me to be someone who will leave that school anytime soon. The only thing that I could see happen is if a school gives him such a rediculus contract, that he has no choice but to take it. Other then that, hes not going anywhere.

Dantonio is not going anywhere. His relationship with the university, Izzo, AD Hollis, and the way the fans love him, MSU is his last stop. He has said it many times before. I find it funny how he gets under you UM fans' skin. Saying "it's better than being 3-9" got all of you riled up when he was just stating the opposite of MSU's record. When he talked about how our coaches and players have stayed at B11 media day, many wolvies thought he was taking another shot at them. He has got all of your $2.99 Wal-Mart special edition UM boxer briefs in a bunch and I find it hilarious.

Because that shows a lack of class from Hart. The whole press conference thing, people are always going to have their opinions so I'm not going to call Dantonio a saint for saying that. But Hart's comment was directed right at MSU. Yeah, we're going to get a little upset. Dantonio's 3-9 and comment about coaches and players aren't even directed at UM and you guys get crazy.

You are completely ignoring the comments that I'm talking about and are talking about tOSU vs UM game. OSU is not a rival and he is close with Tressel. UM is a rival, and after your boy Mike Hart's comments, not too high on his list. It's not like MSU needed OSU to lose this game. They also had to beat PSU so it's not like it was all in OSU's hands. Therefore, the comment doesn't mean crap to me. We weren't going to beat PSU anyway. I'm talking about the 3-9 and coaches/players not leaving comments. He mentions nothing in that about UM yet you automatically assume he is taking a shot at you. That makes you insecure. You're insecure about your program right now and you are scared of the fact UM isn't dominating this state anymore. Of course, the arrogance factor will never allow you to admit it, but everyone outside of the UM fanbase knows it.

Maybe the fact that MSU has had two straight winning seasons, two straight bowl games, and HAS dominated in-state recruiting. People are starting to follow MSU again. Why are there people writing articles about it if it's not true? It's not just newspapers, ESPN, rivals, etc. are saying the same thing. Well at least you got your first choice as a head coach.... oops. Wasn't it like your 4th or 5th choice? Yup, looks like that Michigan job is too good to pass up. At least you guys have won a lot of NC's since 1950. Oh yeah, you've won one.

State has not won a MNC, Michigan has. During my lifetime, Michigan has had one losing season and missed one bowl game. State has done that what, 4 times just this decade? One year does NOT make a program. (Unless you're a State fan, it appears). But hey, maybe this year, you'll beat Michigan for the 2nd time IN A ROW. I bet you've been waiting your whole life for that. (There is no way you were alive in the 60's)

How are you dominating in state recruiting? More players does not mean you are dominating. Gholston was a MSU lock, even though UM wanted him. We took MSU lock Austin White, and now MSU fans think Nick Hill is better. We have the best QB, RB, and WR in the state.

He's close with Izzo and acts like he's there for good. As long as MSU can afford him, I don't see Dantonio going anywhere. I'd be happy if he did. him leaving would sure be a slap in the face heard throughout Spartyville.

I think that's the only one. He's gone from OSU DC to Cincy coach to MSU coach. That doesn't appear to be a guy who wants to leave the Midwest. Maybe Notre Dame could back up the money truck for him, but honestly, there's probably other "hot coaches" they'd try to get first. Dantonio has gotten the job done at MSU so far, but he doesn't strike me as a Notre Dame coach. Well, unless MSU turns in a couple more season between 6-6 and 9-3. Then he'd totally strike me as a modern Notre Dame coach. Zing!

As soon as RR starts slapping Tressel around like Tressel did to Carr and Carr did to Cooper, I think Dantonio will be lobbying for his job behind his back. He does have history there, and if he pulls off one more victory over UM, considering how badly the last thirty years of MSU coaches have done, OSU will probably hire him in a heartbeat, and would probably hire him anyway, even if he loses to UM the next couple of years, as long as he keeps MSU near the top of the little eight. I was talking to an MSU fan down here in Florida yesterday, and the subject came up. I told him that MSU will have to decide, in a year or two, whether they care enough about being a football power to pay the coach in the top ten, or if they want to keep bargain-hunting and watch every good coach they have leave for greener pastures. I'm betting they bargain-hunt.

First of all, how old is Tressel? And how old is Dantonio? What is Tressel's record there? How many BCS bowls? Yeah, I don't see OSU firing Tressel to hire Dantonio there buddy. Are you wearing a tin hat?

I think he was jokingly referring to how Ohio State people abbreviate "THE University of Ohio State" as tOSU, but Michigan folk abbreviate the Pryor college choice joke as tUoOS.

I think that MSU will keep Dantonio as long as they want him. At age 53, he's getting close to too old to switch jobs, and he wouldn't be a "sexy" enough hire for another school to offer him a huge raise above his $1.8 MM salary.

and his recruiting base is Michigan/ Ohio/ Midwest, not national so where would he go? I also think that he is a good, but not great coach (e.g. he may make a Rose Bowl appearance once every 10 years or so and will be 2nd to 5th in the B10 every year).

I don't think MSU will let another well-liked coach leave. At this point I think they'd much rather overpay than reinforce the belief that MSU is just a coaching stepping stone. I'm of the opinion that: 1. Beating a worst-ever Michigan team + 2. Being outscored 94-25 by the other elite B10 teams + 3. Poor showing in their oft celebrated bowl game != A Walk-on-water-like-Tebow coach. Having said that, he's made them relevant again.

+1000 sir, this is exactly how I felt about last season. The poor showing was a disaster, given that Georgia didn't even care to be there for the first half. Once they started trying, they put MSU down like a rented mule. Also, I wish is could give more '+1's for using !=.

I think he'd have to be offered a good NFL job for him to leave. If not, he's a perfect Sparty fit (slight douche, huge inferiority complex, everything he does is in response to Michigan, etc).

Yeah, I don't think he's bailing. It's not like he's at Eastern, his salary is still pretty high. He would have to have a couple really successful years at MSU for any big big program to go after him, and MSU would probably pay him just as much as any other school would (with some, but very few exceptions). Like some people said, a big program is only going to drop big dollars for a guy they think will be around for a while, and Dantonio is no spring chicken.
