Current top Ohio St 2024 commit, the #1 WR Jeremiah Smith, taking official visits to other schools

Unlike the news about Ohio Sts 2024 QB commit, Air Noland, this is not a rumor.

He's the 2024 #1 WR at On3, Rivals, and 247.

When is he going to make the final decision: “Not until signing day...... I want to see games and how everything plays out. I’d say December but it might change.” LINK: https://www.on3.com/news/ohio-state-five-star-plus-wr-commit-jeremiah-smith-wont-make-final-decision-until-signing-day/

He says he reads the comments on his twitter. There's fans from several schools asking why not this, why not that? Maybe he's not feeling so secure with one "born on third" coach.

Honestly this post sucks.  It takes us to the level of MSU and how they would post this information about us losing a top recruit.    To me makes us look like bad IMO.    Really who cares if a recruit is taking looks 6 months before signing day.

Somewhat related, someone's resource advantage seems to be under threat:

Nick, Urban, and Dabo have all pined for the old days. I find that interesting. NIL may have its imperfections, but if it ends up distributing talent more evenly, that seems like a clear positive.

Both can be true. The very few top-tier teams will still sign the top classes over and over, but even if just a few more 5stars and 4stars end up elsewhere AND maybe, more importantly, it makes those same top teams have to expend more time, energy, and money recruiting that they didn't have to before, it can tip the balance enough.

Hopefully for them their top rated NFL QB can throw more than 2 TDs a game in their biggest games. Cornelius Johnson does that just by himself.

I have no doubt in my mind that OSU could lose every single recruit and sign only PWOs and there will still be educated rational Michigan fans on this board who will say that "OSU will be fine." Whatever that even means.

I'd say 3 losses is possible, but highly unlikely. 9-3 is their lowest plausible floor, with losses to us, Penn State, and one of Wisconsin or Notre Dame. Unlike Meyer, Day has dominated the rest of the Big Ten. Based on some cursory Wikipedia research, not only is Michigan the only team to beat them, the only team to come within one-score was (absurdly) Indiana in 2020.

They had a close game with Minnesota in 2021. I'm trying to remember what the controversial thing was in that game that worked to Ohio St's favor. I do remember the game was closer than the score indicated. Last years Penn St game was close too. Penn St outgained them. 3 picks by Sean Clifford gave the game to Ohio St. Maryland made a big showing on them in the 4th qtr last year, but still lost. Ohio St's defense is very suspect. That type of thing shouldn't happen in the 4th qtr with an inferior team. Maryland got 1 more yard total offense for the game.

The difference this year is going to be Kyle McCord. He won't curl up like a caterpillar when adverse conditions come, like the cold windy weather at Northwestern, or the pressure Michigan defenses have put on Stroud.

So yeah, 3 losses is probably unlikely because McCord isn't mentally soft like Stroud. But it is possible. They also could be 11-0 when they play Michigan.

I don't see why it matters that Harbaugh recruited Stroud. It doesn't change the fact that he lacks the competitive mindset we want out of a QB.

You often don't find these things out until you have a guy playing big games and they're really put to the test. We really wanted Shea but for him he never reached the point where the game "slowed down." Similar thing with Joe Milton where despite being a practice god he wilted when a real game started.

There aren't that many talented QBs per year, and one with Stroud's arm talent is extremely rare. Of course we recruited him! Who knows, with better coaching, perhaps we could have toughened him up. But if he had come here we might have been disappointed with his softness the same way we were disappointed with Shea and Milton's lack of field vision. J.J. has been our first QB in the entire Harbaugh era who has checked every box, and the first one at Michigan since Henne.

How do you know this?

That’s a little illusory. Penn State last year had a fourth-quarter lead. Their 2021 game was also close; Penn State had the ball down 6 midway through the 4th. The Maryland game last year was 36-30 when OSU got a defensive TD in the final minute.

Look, I hate OSU so much that it hurts.  And I hope their top recruits all go elsewhere and their recruiting falls off a cliff in Columbus. But we have to give credit where credit is due. Their recruiting has been outstanding the last 3 years:

2020: Number 5 overall, average player score of .9179

2021: Number 2 overall, average player score of .9452

2022: Number 4 overall, average player score of .9417

So sadly, we should expect they will be fine when it comes to recruiting. I just am thankful that Ryan von Thirdbase (tip of hat to Seth) hasn't coached them up like his predecessor Voldemort could. And that they hate snow ... and cold weather ... and the sniffles.

No shit. Their average player score (which is what really matters) has been top five for over a decade. Every year, I think.

I'll listen to arguments that the tops of their classes have been weighted too much toward certain positions (like WR).

LeCheezus

That is the argument.  It’s heavily weighted towards WR’s.  If you sign 4-5 top 100 WR’s every year, it is highly likely a team that signed 4-5 top 100 guys at different positions every year will be a better team.  Half those WR’s are going to transfer or not work out.  There are only so many practice and game snaps to go around.  Similarly, if you start 4 or 5 tackles on your OL that were former top 100 players, your line looks awesome on paper but your guards get wrecked by good DT’s when you try to run.  In general it seems Day has tipped the recruiting focus heavily toward offensive skill position players - outside of some highly ranked edge guys and corners, OSU doesn’t seem to be racking up the high end or midrange talent at DT and LB like they used to, and they have been abysmal at safety.

Im not saying OSU is a complete paper tiger, but there is a real argument to be made that their classes aren’t as good as they look.

If that’s solely what a lot of these kids are going for, just waiting for the highest bidder, I’m curious how sustainable that is for a football program. Look no further than A&M.

They brought in that historic recruiting class last year, and then how many of them just transferred out because of how awful and disjointed the entire team was. Sure, they had all the NIL money in the world to offer, but they essentially created a team of bounty hunters and guns for hire.

NIL is an important component and is here to stay, but if that’s all you have to offer, I think over time you’ll still get weeded out by plenty of top prospects.

They want to get paid, sure. But they want to win too. And they want to get prepared for the league.
