Why is it "college football's first game" if Hawaii played last night?

First FCS game or first Saturday night game?
August 28th, 2016 at 12:00 AM ^
first game in the states i heard them say.
August 27th, 2016 at 7:48 PM ^
North Dakota State could beat a helluvalot of FBS schools....elite program and back to back to back to back to back NCs
August 28th, 2016 at 12:37 PM ^
Let's just hope Iowa is not one of them
August 27th, 2016 at 7:47 PM ^
Pretty sure that both of these teams would smash both Cal and Hawaii. Already looks like this should be a much better game
August 27th, 2016 at 8:08 PM ^
but then I realized Hawai'i is likely ranked beneath these two teams in Sagarin's ratings and Cal gave up 31 points to that team so
Ed: Actually NDSU is actually #44! Cal is 54, Hawai'i 138, and CSU 145 so I bet CSU could at least give Cal a fight
August 27th, 2016 at 8:15 PM ^
I think St John Bosco would smash em as well

Elite HS teams won't beat shitty D1 programs
August 27th, 2016 at 7:52 PM ^
NDSU vs. Montana last year was an awesome lid-lifter. Hope this one is a good contest as well.
August 27th, 2016 at 7:55 PM ^
Five straight national titles is really impressive in this day and age.

Good matchup. I watched the NDSU - Montana game to start the season last year and was impressed with both teams
August 27th, 2016 at 8:09 PM ^
It's just bananas that NDSU has won the national title 5 times in a row. And since it's FCS, it's not just them clinging to #1 all year, it's doing that plus winning the whole playoff.
Bananas.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:10 PM ^
This is a pretty good game both teams well coached.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:11 PM ^
If NDSU doesn't beat Iowa, I feel like they'll lose a close one. They look like once they got going a bit on this drive that they can hold their own. Be interesting to see how that game turns out.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:19 PM ^
Wouldn't be surprised if they beat iowa at all. Iowa plays very conservatively and Ndsu will pull out all stops to try and beat a ranked B1G team. Ferentz hasn't shown much ability to adjust mid game, they traditionally struggle in non conference, and also the years after their once per decade surprise teams after Ferentz solidifies another crazy extension.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:27 PM ^
Absolutely...NDSU can beat Iowa if they execute well & Iowa comes out flat. Ferentz ain't all that imo...last year was an oddity.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:28 PM ^
This current Iowa team beats NDSU by 17+. Can UM beat Iowa at Iowa?
August 27th, 2016 at 9:17 PM ^
Iowa was a good team but also a beneficiary of a mediocre divison and crossover games with indiana and maryland. They barely beat average Wisconsin, Minny, and Nebraska teams en route to getting lucky not to face OSU in the B1G Championship, losing to MSU instead. MSU and Iowa proceeded to each get throttled in their bowl games that each were very fortunate to be in. They won the games they needed to to get there, but neither team were the world beaters their records suggested. So, yes NDSU will give them a game. Iowa just doesn't blow anyone out, especially disciplined teams. Ferentz is as close you get to Carr, with less talent.. I'll just leave it at that when facing lower division champions as a ranked team.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:18 PM ^
In other news the Lions first team offense still has not scored a touchdown.

Can't believe they put all the preseason games on FOX Sports...the one freakin network Vue doesn't offer!
August 27th, 2016 at 8:26 PM ^
Is anyone surprised by this? Do we expect anything other than suckage?

Nope but they need to put Jake in!
Edit: Nice pick Matt! Put Jake in...maybe he should be shooting for starting QB job!
August 27th, 2016 at 8:52 PM ^
or, fewer than Ryan Mallett has tonight
August 27th, 2016 at 8:23 PM ^
Defensive struggle so far, big fumble by NDSU to give CSU a big opportunity.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:38 PM ^
Nice to have college football back. And as a bonus, Apple TV finally added FoxSportsGO just in time for football season.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:48 PM ^
Yep, go Bison! The town is jacked up tonight. Good test before they go down to Iowa City in a couple weeks. Don't count them out of that game either. The Hawkeyes offense better come to play.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:51 PM ^
Ndsu vs. Iowa is like us vs. App State in 2007. The Bison are a very good program. I don't get why you schedule them over like Delaware State if you're going to play an fcs team.
August 27th, 2016 at 8:55 PM ^
I think Iowa needs to experience the_Horror this year
August 27th, 2016 at 10:21 PM ^
Iowa should be 2-0 and probably around #15 going into that game and Iowa is still overrated. NDSU might be able to pull it off.
August 27th, 2016 at 9:01 PM ^
I just referenced the similarity below... Ferentz is much like carr too in conservative play calling, Iowa is ranked, ndsu is a lower divison multi year defending champ... the only difference is, Iowa always shits the bed after their magical season per decade and no one cares
August 27th, 2016 at 9:23 PM ^
Speaking of the horror... any other '07 grads who didn't realize going to 3 rose bowls in 4 years wouldnt always be normal? Appy State was the first home game I watched via telly as a grad and it was all downhill from there until now. I must be the good luck charm? Pretty sure we need to start an mgofundme to send me to every michigan game from here on out.
August 27th, 2016 at 9:14 PM ^
Nice FG NDSU...tie game going into the half 3-3! Man I'm shocked this is a solid defensive game both sides you dont' see this much.
August 27th, 2016 at 9:24 PM ^
Charlestown Chew scores! 10-3.

Wow, great run by CSU for the game's first TD! Also, NDSU with the bone-headed move to not do the onside kick when kicking from the 50. How coaches don't get that the ~10 yards of field position you're gambling is totally worth a chance at awesome field position is beyond me.
August 27th, 2016 at 9:27 PM ^
If NDSU loses this they're going to take their rage out on Iowa hehe! oh the_horror!
August 27th, 2016 at 9:27 PM ^
that Holloway kid is pretty fast. that was a great TD run.
August 27th, 2016 at 9:32 PM ^
Not sure why we have to have spoiler thread titles for something so inconsequential in the era of the DVR. Just put up the open thread and those of us that plan on watching the game later can still jump on the site.
August 27th, 2016 at 9:43 PM ^
is anyone seriously DVRing this game?
August 27th, 2016 at 9:52 PM ^
Yes, me. I'm football and betting deprived. Put a little action on it before taking the kids to Disney for the evening. Now I'm home, cracked a beer, and started watching while browsing mgoblog.
To be honest, I don't really care about this particular game, but really don't like spoilers in titles. They serve no purpose, and I'd rather get ahead of it now before some decent games are ruined down the road.
August 27th, 2016 at 10:23 PM ^
If you're not watching the game live, you shouldn't complain about seeing people posting about it. During the season, people are going to be posting threads about ND, MSU, Michigan, Ohio State and they're not going to wait a few hours for one guy.
August 27th, 2016 at 10:52 PM ^
Correct, the game threads happen all the time, and should. However, a good thread title reads "NDSU/CSU Open Thread", whereas a bad one posts the score in the thread title. Putting live scores in the thread title serves absolutely no purpose.
August 27th, 2016 at 11:46 PM ^
Dude. This is a sports blog that you are checking on while trying to put off the games until later. You expect no one to post anything in the thread titles about games. If MSU loses to Furman, I bet someone would post a thread about it giving it away for you. Furthermore, if you check facebook and like espn or detroit news etc. scores are going to be on your newsfeed.
August 27th, 2016 at 9:36 PM ^
Wow Frasier flicked 1 guy away on that run and 3 CSU guys flopped
August 27th, 2016 at 9:43 PM ^
Nice TD but damn this game is just dragging for some reason
August 27th, 2016 at 9:43 PM ^
NDSU ties it - now this game is heating up!
August 27th, 2016 at 9:49 PM ^
Just tuning in! Meaningful football!!! I love it. Didn't get to watch last night's game so, this is my official first viewing of real football for the 2016 season.
Nice pick.
I'm also surprisingly cool with listening to Mack Brown do color commentary.
August 27th, 2016 at 9:58 PM ^
Sometimes he has really good insight into the game and sometimes all he does is just spew mindless hyperbole
August 27th, 2016 at 10:07 PM ^
Seems like every big play in this game gets called back. Close game, but not as exciting as last year's match-up. Hopefully the 4th quarter will provide some thrills.
August 27th, 2016 at 10:20 PM ^
Mack Brown thinks Georgia Southern is playing.
