Concert at Crisler tonight- first (post shutdown) “large” indoor event at M sports venue?

Submitted by JimmyBeGood on September 23rd, 2021 at 9:01 AM

Glass Animals will be performing tonight at Crisler for students only. I believe there have only been a few indoor volleyball matches this fall in front of hundreds at M venues. This will likely be a few thousand in close quarters. The last concert there a few years back was 2chainz and Lil Yachty. What was your favorite comcert  at Crisler of yore?

Ann Arbor has really gone to the shitter the last decade or so in terms of concert performers. Hearing the performers Ann Arbor used to get compared to the C-listers we got when I was in college is depressing

Back in the olden days, they used to have a lot of big time acts there.

I saw Bill Joel and REO Speedwagon at the height of their popularity. Even people like Barry Manilow and Bob Seger made appearances up there.

I remember everyone noticed this incredibly gorgeous photographer at the Bill Joel concert that seemed to have her own area cordoned off from the rest of the phototgraphers.

You could tell from 100 feet away she was spectacular.

I couple months later, we found out he was dating Christie Brinkley.

somewhere between ‘79 and ‘82 Prince , The Police w/ Joan Jett, and the New Barbarians (early super group Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, Stanley Clarke … rumors of Jagger, or Clapton never came to fruition).

In my years in Ann Arbor, I went to three concerts at Crisler.

  • Grateful Dead
  • Eagles
  • Springsteen

All of them were amazing. Thanks for stirring the concert memory bank.

The Glass Animals are my daughter's favorite band. She's off to England to see them in November.

I was at that REM show in 1987!  I remember the dB's opening up.....were 10,000 Maniacs there, too?

I saw REM on the Fables Of The Reconstruction ('85) and Lifes Rich Pageant ('86) tours in Detroit and thought that those were better shows.  It's possible that The Replacements were one of the opening bands in 1985.

I'm not sure when they stopped having regular concerts but they were fun in their day.

This is admittedly not nearly as interesting/cool as the John Sinclair (where Jane Fonda met Tom Hayden) and Grateful Dead shows mentioned below but when I was in grade school I saw Kenny Rogers at Crisler.  It was my first concert, but as I recall it was great.  He sounded great, performed all his hits of which there many at that point, and his gimmick was pointing to the loudest section and then without fail throwing a frisbee right to it from the stage.

In my day, I saw Miles Davis, PFunk, the Allman Brothers, James Taylor, Dr. John, and Earth, Wind and Fire at Crisler. All fantastic, with the Allman Brothers perhaps the best of all (shrooms may have contributed).*

At Hill Auditorium--don't get me started. I worked on the Eclipse Jazz series, including for several festivals. One highlight was picking up Stan Getz at Detroit Metro and driving him to A2 in my Volkswagen Beetle. Utterly gracious guy, great conversationalist. I sat and held his saxophone, in its case, in a folding chair, while he went for a swim at the Rec Center.

*Noodled around and see that the Allmans show included Dr. John

1980 - Marshall Tucker Band. It was right after Travolta's "Urban Cowboy" movie came out. So everyone (including myself and roommate) wore cowboy hats! It was a great show and was sold out....

I recall Lupe Fiasco at Hill Auditorium, and the notorious Ludacris concert there as well.

My concert story though is around the Wale, Big Sean, and Clipse concert at the Power Center in 2010. Wale was the headliner (this was right around his debut album and before Big Sean's). The student government was charged with making sure Wale was happy. He had a few requests: first, for some weed. No problem. Second, a Braylon Edwards jersey to perform in. Now this one was a bit more challenging within their budget, but they made it happen. They give him the jersey, but he refuses it, saying he wanted a signed one. So, instead, he just calls Braylon up who last minute signs a jersey and gives it to Wale to perform in for the concert.
