Columbus Roll Call

Submitted by ThadMattasagoblin on November 20th, 2022 at 11:17 AM

I am in section 8c next week in the Horseshoe. I'd expect the largest Michigan presence down there since 2006 with us being undefeated. Who else is going?

To be fair, OSU fans filled the Big House in recent years because Michigan was routinely only in a position to play for its pride after a mediocre season, OSU was still in the middle of its unending golden age, and there were no true stakes involved for Michigan and OSU had already wrapped up a spot in Indy, so a lot of Michigan season ticket holders sold their seats not wanting to watch an ass kicking, and OSU fans gobbled them up on StubHub. And you could also feel good about buying a ticket to see a game where you were near certain your team was going to win.

If Michigan starts winning more games in this rivalry, you’ll start seeing more Michigan fans going down to Columbus.

Nah. Family room couch with snacks strategically arranged around same for me, thanks. Private bathroom, too.

But. Good luck to you and to the Good Guys in the toilet bowl game this coming week! Be safe!

Suggestion? Rent a car for the trip down, take the optional insurance. Because ... 👍

To hell with that. I’d love to be able to go but that’s assuming you would be going to an opposing fanbases stadium where you could simply enjoy rooting on your team. Reality is that you’ll be going into the belly of the most obsessed Xichigan hating assholes on the planet. The way my family was treated in 06 has made me drive 30 miles around Columbus, just to avoid it on a road trip.

I have been to Columbus 4 times with tickets from the Athletic Department. The last 2 times they were $197 for obstructed view. Under the upper deck without a view of the end zone. Never again.

I've been to 3 games there in the last 14 years. If you got thick skin and are not a stupid ass there is no danger. Will you get harassed and called bad words ? Yes of course you will these are Ohioans afterall. Just zip your lips ane dont engage in back and forth and keep it moving. Also try to sit behind Kevin Koger if he is there ! He is a big man who don't take no crap and OSU fans shut their pie holes in his presence  😂

I’ve been to one game there and this is mostly true. Never been called a “fa**ot” or derivative so many times in my life. No one physically messed with us, but I was with a group of about 8 guys. We paid to park in the yard of some buckeye fans house and the car didn’t get messed with, even with M flags and stickers on it.

However I did see a young woman in Michigan gear get assaulted in the toilet-shaped stadium’s concourse as buckeye fans charged down from the upper deck and just ran her over on their way down to the field to celebrate. It was just her and her boyfriend against a small pack of roving bros, so the local malice was carried out unchecked.

So, if you go, be cautious. More than just not getting baited into a bad situation, but also there is a chance people will assault you without provocation for being a M fan.

Wishing all Michigan fans who attend a fantastic day and experience.  Will be rooting hard for the Good Guys and you with my family in front of TV, with radio broadcast on over TV about 60 percent  of the time.

To those of you attending the game, good luck, you'll need it.

I live in Delaware OH and believe me when I tell you that OSU - and their fans - have been waiting on this one for a year. We have to get a lead early and try to take a few of their fans out early.

I was at the 2016 game with my daughter and son-in-law and the OSU crowd noise when that RB went in for the TD in OT was the loudest I've ever heard. This one could get louder. JJ is the key as he needs to keep his emotions in check. I don't think they can shut down the running game, but we will need a solid game from JJ to win

I will be there with my daughters in Section 6C row 7 - one daughter in blue and the other in red.  The one in red is what is sending us there because I'd be fine watching on TV but I hope the one in blue is smiling when the clock hits 0:00.

Hopefully we can take the crowd out of it early. Those fans were so drunkenly violent in 2016 there was no way the refs were making it out alive if OSU lost. I've never witnessed a bigger crowd influence in my life. It was that scarey.

I’ll be there!  My move is to only wear my gear in the Shoe.  The walk to and from the stadium is where the real danger is, so I cover up with my neutral colored coat for both walks.  This method has worked well.

I grew up in suburb 15-20 minutes from the stadium and moved back to the area last year. I think the “be careful” crowd blows things way out of proportion. Not a single person has made a comment to me about wearing M gear in public or at basketball games in my life. Attending football games people make comments, but if you are a rational adult and don’t engage it is not an issue and they move on. I was treated no worse at OSU than I was by MSU fans in Ann Arbor this year. When visiting home for thanksgiving I would go out at OSU wearing M gear the night of the game without issue, although that may have been because they were all loses for M. The only stadium I have been to where I have truly felt unsafe was the  Browns where on multiple occasions I have witnessed opposing fans being punched in the face.

I would not say I have had good experiences, I  just never felt in danger. I am sure those things have happened, but it just seems like there is a narrative that the majority of people going to the game will have an experience similar to what you described. I am not trying to downplay anyones experience, rather just saying a small chance of something happening  should not dissuade them from going to the game and enjoying watching.

So having drunken assholes throwing empty and half full cans of beer at yourself, wife and 8 yr old son are blowing it out of proportion? Having PSA announcements begging fans to behave and being told to rent a car in Ohio if your from Michigan is just people being overly cautious? Fuggin animals is what they are and playing Michigan just ups the adrenaline.

I guess our experiences shape our views. Like I said I’ve been to 5 games in Columbus without issue. The only time anyone has thrown anything at me was at Michigan stadium. Last year versus Washington people were throwing full thing of nachos at me for standing (even though 90%+ of the stadium was standing) because apparently at 6’1 I am too tall to stand. I understand why you feel the way you do, the way I look at it there are complete idiots in every fanbase or large group.

I will also be in 8c with 3 buddies. We always park at 250 W. Dodridge St. It is a fairly Michigan friendly place where the parking fee goes to help mentally impaired citizens, and is located in a place where the walk to and from the stadium is not overly hostile.

I’m on the fence.
Heading to Cleveland for Thanksgiving.
Will have to decide by Wednesday morning as we’ll need to take two cars..so that I can get to the game and 1991/2023/2026 UM Grads can get home.  We all went together in 2018 and they’ve decided once was enough.

I've made trips in '02, '04, '06 (Crabel's hit was legal), and '16 (smh).  I'm hoping to make another this year, but am still sorting out holiday logistics.

I keep telling myself I just need to see one victory there, and I never have to go back.  My hunch is that witnessing that stadium going silent may become an addiction.

I thought the fans were a bit more civil in '16 compared to my previous trips.  They had been kicking our behinds for a decade, so perhaps they grew complacent.  Best to avoid any primarily student areas if memory serves.

I went alone in 2018. Flew down from AK, rented a vehicle at Detroit Metro and drove down to Cbus. Found a park & ride on outskirts of town, rode in with a raincoat over my Michigan sweatshirt. Sat in 2nd row behind the Michigan bench, surrounded by red. Sat next to a preacher who was really nice until the game got out of hand and was swearing, flipping off the UM players 20 feet away. Old lady on the bus ride back rolled down her window and threw trash at UM fans walking on the sidewalk.

But oh to be there when Michigan wins! I am there in spirit supporting each of you that will be there. Be safe, travel in groups & GO BLUE
