Collins & Martin will get a chance to play against Purdue......

Submitted by smitty1983 on

This is per Harbaugh this am on 97.1......after hearing about blacks injury.

Quote:

“Kekoa Crawford, Nate Schoenle, Grant Perry. Donovan-Peoples Jones is going to play a bigger role. And other freshmen are going to have an opportunity: Nico (Collins) and Oliver (Martin). One of them or both will definitely be in the mix,” said Harbaugh. “We’ve got good players and they have to step up.”

The most notable thing on the quote for me is that there is no mention of McDoom. I do not necessarily think it means anything, but it's clear he and Schoenle need to step up more than Martin and/or Collins. They've both been on the field every game at WR.

I'd love to see Martin and Collins in the mix, and everyone needs to step it up. I think RBs in the passing game (and an increase in TE touches) would please me the most.

Schoenle in spring ball. Walk on I think and hungry. Great hands. Have loved Martin's tape also. He looks like he is going to be a long time contributing player for us.

Bummed about Black of course but he will be back eventually and it's fun to have so many interesting options again at wr. Big opportunity for someone coming right up.

Glad the young guys will get the opportunity.  But I do think freshmen WRs have a tough time.  And really hoping to see some of our stud TEs involved.  Harbaugh not showing the whole playbook obviously.

Just win.

Isn't route running being noted as a potential issue for the passing game? Martin is a route artisan, no? Grant Perry + Oliver Martin sounds like a good improvement. Not that I don't want to see DPJ and Nico. Martin needs to be healthy as well

Oddly enough, it was Martin with the one's on Tuesday and he will split reps with Collins today. Ways cannot crack the one's. McDoom will play a bigger role, but it was Collins making big plays and Martin (now at full/or close to full strength) as the most consistent route runner with a better understanding of the offense. I think that will trump Collins' athletic ability in the end. Both will play Saturday.

I think with Black out we need to insert a taller more athletic receiver like Nico. At 6ft.5 he brings a facet to the game that the others don't. I'm sure he will have to be ready before he sees action but if we get him acclimated now, when Black returns, we will be scary on the outsides. Then add in 6ft. 7 TE's, Perry, DPJ, Crawford, McDoom.  If Martin is injured he should take his time. We dont need another slot guy, We need a big guy who can high point the ball and go up and out physical smaller DB's. We are really going to be good.

The fact that you thought that we were, or that we needed to be, better than that is really the problem. It's not all good or all bad, all black or white...there are shades of Gray. Wilton Speight is sometimes good, sometimes great, sometimes poor, sometimes horrible. Call out each one as you see fit, And, wait for it, hes wearing big boy pants as UM's starting QB and can handle it. I cama on the other hand, can handle no more of this self important nonsense speech that our fanbase is somehow morally or ethically above all other fan bases. Just get over it.

don't need redshirts. Most, if not all, of our receivers will be gone by year 3.

I went through the game film the other day and Speight struck me as being afraid to make mistakes after making a mistake. I think he should just let go and let the ball rip regardless of making a mistake or not. Reducing the number of mistakes comes from practice and in-game experience, not from fear of mistakes. Maybe he should learn from Rudock and put in an occasional pump fake to get the WR open?

Anyway, as a fan base, I really think we should back up all our players and give them the encouragement to thrive.
