Coaching Staff Changes if Weiss is Fired

Submitted by UMVAFAN on January 18th, 2023 at 8:25 PM

If Weiss is fired after the investigation is complete, should Michigan hire a quarterbacks coach or should Harbaugh assume the responsibilities?

I would opt for the latter, move Sherrone Moore to the Offensive Coordinator role exclusively, shift Grant Newsome from TEs to OL coach, move Jay Harbaugh back to TEs while retaining special teams, and then bring back Chris Partridge as the Safeties coach. Partridge is a great recruiter so would be a huge asset after having so much on field success, and could bring immediate talent at corner from the transplant portal. A true freshman corner who started 9-10 games at Ole Miss just entered the portal and his primary reason for leaving was coaching uncertainty. His name is Davison Igbinosun and he was the number one recruit from New Jersey in 2022, so he definitely is a Partridge guy and would be a strong bet to follow him to Michigan if he joined the coaching staff again. This would be the last key piece to having a complete team next season.

Other thoughts on the staff make up if changes are necessary?

Something tells me Partridge will want more than a safeties job.

But if Weiss is out, we won't skip a beat. IMO, a coach that doesn't recruit well isn't so valuable.

No one can definitely say what the reasons are but the offense looked more complete and organized when Weiss joined the staff. They had a lot of new pre snap motions and the two minute offense (still not great) was light years ahead of where it was. Part of that might be improvement if the O line, better QB play from Cade versus Shea, or Sherrone playing a bigger role but it looked better. The are plenty of good offensive minds out there to hire but changing things up doesn't always work out and considering how powerful the offense generally is, I'd prefer to maintain the current staff.

All the changes you mention happened the moment Josh Gattis took his talents to South Beach.  So yeah, we can "definitely say what the reasons are".  Weiss is a good run game guy, and so is Moore - but neither can run a sophisticated pass game that's integrated worth a shit into the run game.  The pass game of 2021-22 was not that, it was disconnected and aloof.  Yeah, it was somewhat effective because good players can make it work, but was far from an integrated counterpunch that could blow the doors off any limits a good defense might offer.

If Weiss does exit, I would really like Harbaugh to hire someone that can organize a modern pass game that's integrated into the Harbaughffense.  You know, the kind of thing Gattis envisioned but couldn't pull off.

Brian David Griese (/ˈɡriːsi/ GREE-see; born March 18, 1975) is an American football coach and former quarterback who is the quarterbacks coach for the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL). He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the third round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He played high school football at Christopher Columbus High School and later college football at Michigan.

Griese played three seasons at Michigan, leading the Wolverines to the 1997 National Championship (as recognized by the Associated Press). After being selected in the third round by the Denver Broncos in the 1998 NFL Draft, he earned a Super Bowl ring with the Broncos in his rookie season, as a backup to John Elway in Super Bowl XXXIII. Elway retired after the Super Bowl and Griese became the starting quarterback for the Broncos during the 1999 season. Griese was a Pro Bowl selection with the Broncos in 2000. After leaving the Broncos he started at quarterback for the Miami Dolphins (5 games in 2003), Chicago Bears (13 games in 2006 and 2007) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (21 games in 2004, 2005, 2008). He is the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese. Griese is a former color commentator for Monday Night Football on ESPN.

Griese is founder and board president of Judi's House, a children's grief support center in Denver, Colorado. Brian's mother, Judi Griese, succumbed to breast cancer when Brian was 12. The grieving process was hard for Brian, and so he established Judi's House to serve grieving children in the Denver area.[11]

He also helped establish what would become the Griese, Hutchinson and Woodson Champions for Children's Hearts golf weekend in May 2007. The event benefited the capital campaign for construction of the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital as well as the Michigan Congenital Heart Center (MCHC) which resides within Mott. He also remains involved with the From the Heart Organization, a relationship that dates back to his playing days in Ann Arbor when he would visit Mott every week.

I like this idea. It was told to me, before the news that currently is circulating, that Weiss might leave. If that were to happen, the plan was to find a passing coordinator/qb coach. Brian would be someone who would fit the staff very well. Not sure he would be interested.

Also I saw someone mention above the impact that Weiss has had and I have to say there’s a lot of respect on the staff for him and how he coordinates an offense. It’s more than just schemes. He was brought in to help organize the offense and that he did.

Id be concerned about moving Moore away from O line but if he is destined for a head coaching job soon it may make sense to get Newsome ready to assume the role once he departs. Moving to O line coach now, with Moore still around to assist, is a solid play. Its clear Jaybaugh can coach any position. Bringing Partridge back in some capacity would be ideal.

It’s not unheard of to split up OL coaching responsibilities, so I could see Moore taking on the OC while retaining coaching of the interior linebacker line positions and adding the Tackles to Newsome’s plate. Grant might need a little more seasoning before taking on the entire OL.

Promote current Michigan offensive analyst Kirk Campbell to interim QB coach. He has been here for a year so the transition would be seamless. Previously he was at Old Dominion where he spent two seasons as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach (and Penn State before ODU). His focus would be on JJ and helping Moore with game prep by taking whatever Moore doesn’t want or need to do.

Good point! Hopefully Campbell wouldn’t be Ben McDaniels 2.0, but your thought process on this is solid. I agree, we should take a risk on an outsider for QB coach. I hate to play with the chemistry (every QB coach has their own throwing process, just like swing coaches in golf), but if we get the right guy it could be next level outcomes for us.
