Coaching Carousel: Joe Moorhead to…Akron

Very interesting move, IMO. Born and raised in that area, went to Akron my freshman year, and just an absolute horrible program. Literally where coaches at the end of their career go to walk off into a 3-22 record.

Given his pedigree and current role (Oregon OC), I figured he was more in line for larger roles.

So I'm not sure if this is more a DJ Durkin situation (had interviewing on his mind, hence the horrendous performance (again) vs. Utah), or after last night's performance Akron was the best he could get...

I do feel like Terry Bowden was at least respectable there, though...

This was about getting closer to home.

If the OC job at Pitt, PSU or WVU would've come open...he would've left for those jobs as well.

This is more like Chris Petersen, or even Don Brown.

Guys who want to be in a certain location for personal reasons (health, family, etc.)

Bowden just wanted to coach and wanted to get back to the "roots" of coaching. Like Pitino, Calhoun, those guys who've done it at the highest level and just don't want to let it go.

Wanted to be closer to home. He was leaving.

Honestly believe if Gattis had left, he would've come to Michigan this time to get closer. There had been rumblings that he was out, regardless of any opportunity near western PA.  Sounds like he'll give this a shot and then retire.

He would be a cool offensive assistant hire for sure, but should Gattis finds a HC opportunity, Matt Weiss really feels like the next man up to take charge of the offense and be OC IMO. Anything below a OC position at least feels like too big a downgrade for Moorehead in my eyes.

If he wanted to get back to the rust belt area, Akron is a fine place to be. Shouldn't be too much to pressure on him and I'm sure he's not looking to relive his Mississippi St tenure where it felt like his athletic department hated him from the get go.

Seems like Cristobal left the door wide open for leaving O by not signing his extension and his press conference. Wonder if that factored in to Moorehead taking this position or his inability to generate offense against Utah twice.
If Oregon, Baylor (Aranda to LSU) open with LSU and Oklahoma still open this carousel could swing for several more weeks.

Wish he would have waited till the off-season. If Gattis leaves, he would have been my #1 for replacement, given his great success vs OSU and the pieces we have on the team.

Feels like Akron would have been there too for him in a month. Gattis would have been a likely option there too

Edit: didn’t see my comment was basically posted two above… but I agree!

Anyone have thoughts as to the silence of the Oklahoma search? Makes me think either an assistant on a team in one of these games today, or Fickell.
