Coaching bits from WTKA roundtable

Per Sam Webb Beielin could have had the Orlando Magic job last year and DOES NOT believe Beilein's primary reason for leaving is that he wants to prove it in the NBA.

Craig Ross: "In 3 or 4 years from now Michigan fans will regret Luke Yaklich isn't the head coach at Michigan." Mentioned Steve Fisher, Matt Painter, Tom Izzo, Johnny Orr, and Bill Frieder as guys who went from assistant to head coach and had success. Webb is skeptical this will happen.

The pie in the sky candidates (Stevens, Wright, etc.) likely aren't happening.

Michigan could get Nate Oats but he's not willing to interview due to just taking the Alabama job. Webb hasn't seen or heard that's he's a candidate however.

Brian: "Once you get past guys like Steve Prohm I don't see a single head coach out there that I would prefer to an internal hire or Juwan Howard."

A must some of the current assistants are retained especially Yaklich. Webb: "It would behoove Michigan to ask all three what it will take to keep them."

Webb: "It's going to be an interesting month." Brian: "Month?!" Webb: They're still in the search firm vetting phase." This would contradict Baumgardner's report that Warde had a ready made short list.

My little guy died unexpectedly last fall. One of the toughest days of my life as any pet owner can tell you. No one is forcing you to click or read any thread so I really don't understand why people feel the need to come in and leave smartass comments like this all the time.

Do you honestly not see the stunning hypocrisy in this? You're physically unable to make a comment on someone else's point without saying their opinion is a joke or putting "LOL" at the end. You're not looking for a discussion, you want a soapbox to yell at people. You should be treated like the guys with the huge Jesus signs with a megaphone outside the stadium on Greene Street.

I think it's funny that you're so offended by me returning fire on people who have added nothing to this thread other than personal insults. If you think I'm just going to let that keep happening thread after thread you're sorely mistaken. If you and some other posters could stay on topic instead of making everything about me we wouldn't have these issues but you can't help yourself can you. Seriously fuck off.

You're right, we're missing out on such thoughtful topics like this useful thread, which already gets a summary posted on the main page by Seth every episode. Or a separate thread on hiring Luke Yaklich, which definitely wasn't brought up before yesterday when you thought of it. And how can I forget you filling your diaper about if Warde Manuel worked hard to keep Beilein, as if there's any concrete evidence that posters here can provide on that. These insults at you happen for a reason, you need another hobby.

I said this in a thread yesterday:  While 1201 (who may or may not be Maizen, but who cares) does have a generally negative view, especially with respect to football, his commentary and contributions to the board since the Beilein resignation have all been nothing but positive.  He continues to relay info and start decent threads, and his opinions on THIS topic are no different than those of the majority of the board (not that agreeing with the majority should be a posting requirement, but it, unfortunately, often is here).

Of late, I find more of the "F U 1201, you are Maizen and you are negative and I don't like you" posts more annoying than 1201's actual posts.

"IamnotMaizenor1201"  would Parse out to "I am not Maize nor 1201".

I see what you did there, you tried to make it appear like you were claiming not to be Maizen, but you actually disavowed being Maize.  Since you didn't disavow being Maizen the only logic conclusion is that YOU ARE MAIZEN.

Mostly I think this has to do with the fresh wounds from getting our heats ripped out from us a few days ago.

Agreed though - outside of signing recruits (not sure if we're hitting and deadlines there?) doing this right is important even if it's very late in the cycle.

Brian's comments didn't make any sense to me. There is a huge gap between Juwan and the assistants.

Juwan is a candidate for NBA teams. Our assistants didn't get hired into the Horizon league.

Juwan is a candidate for NBA jobs because he's an NBA assistant coach.  It makes sense he'd get into a couple of those meetings.  Becky Hammon is also a candidate for NBA jobs and people straight-up scoffed at that being a viable person.

The goal of a college basketball team is to get a coach who can do a good job in that spot.  Howard may well be a good college coach, but right now his sum total experience in college is as a player 20+ years ago.

Please no Prohm. Him & Jordan at Butler are two guys I think way overrated. His style isn’t about defense or really anything other than pickup ball. Not a fan. I do think on your list, after Donvon big drop off. Howard intriguing, but lots of question marks.

This would contradict Baumgardner's report that Warde had a ready made short list.

Not necessarily. It takes time to communicate through the back channels.

Here's the tweet. It also contradicts Webb's assertion that Beilein's primary reason for leaving was to simply coach in the NBA. Me thinks this came from Warde directly or someone close to him and he's trying to cover his own ass.

Per source: After Beilein's talks with the Pistons last year, AD Warde Manuel became convinced JB would leave if/when another NBA offer came. Has had a short list ready since that time.

Not a money decision. Beilein wanted to coach in the NBA. https://t.co/sNkwAZn1OH

Kinda feels like this was the peak for Michigan basketball.  Actual top CBB coaches aren't going to want to come here, because Michigan wants to keep things clean.  Which severely limits your coaching pool in the college ranks.

That leaves you with trying to find an upcoming assistant type, and none of those are likely to have the same combo of coaching and eyeing under the radar recruit types that Beilein did.

I think you're underestimating the position. Something Warde has been pretty good at is keeping his nose out of the coaching staff and giving them the autonomy to succeed or fail on their own. Warde won't be making a coach "keep things clean", he's going to hire the best coach imo. Now granted, he may very well think the best coach is Porter Moser, but there's not going to be any mission statement the coach is going to have to agree to. He'll get the keys to the program.

Sam kind of sounded like he's pushing Shaka Smart, and that he's telling us to stop being hard on Shaka Smart, because it could very well be Shaka Smart.
