Coaches' Poll - Michigan Picks up One Vote
I was reading through this morning's release of the coaches' poll, and second-to-last in the "Others Receiving Votes" section - lo and behold - "Michigan 1."
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/rankingsindex
So the question is, who ranked us at 25th in their poll?
Any speculation? Is it a pity vote like Spurrier's old vote for Duke?
In the words of a venerable MGoBoard poster: "wha happened?"
Wow. We posted at the exact same time. I bet RR voted for us-unless you can't vote for your own team.
I believe I beat you by one minute.
Nice work working the Friday morning internet... guess there's not much else going on.
we are 57th in the nation!!!
We have a vote!!
that it could have been RR throwing us on his own ballot?
Or is it another coach playing games so that if we are better than expected they can say something like "see, I was the only one..." ?
to vote for you own team, I would expect that every coach in the country would vote his own team in. Otherwise what kind of message would that send to his guys?
My guess is the Bill Cubit voted for Michigan.

Big East - 0 teams in the top 25
MWC - 3 teams in the top 25
These are strange times.

That is defenitely strange though.

Alabama- 5th, sorry dont see it. UTAH smoked them and they are 18th
MSU- and their dominince and BCS ready team, not even ranked.
WVU- goes from national championship contender to not even pre-season ranked in 1 season without RR.
Perception is a funny thing. Preseason polls dont matter unless you try to win a national championship from unranked. But its interesting to see how these teams get ranked.

bcsblue, the reason Utah dropped to 18th is because they lost alot of their starters. Including:
Brian Johnson (Starting QB)
Darrel Mack (2nd leading rusher)
Freddie Brown (leading reciever)
And a sizeable loss on the defence.
Bama on the other hand, had a great recruiting class, and return one of the best WR in the nation. J. Jones.

How in the hell did UCLA get 14 votes. seriously, they beat Washington, Washington st, (who combined to get a grand total of 1 win only becasue they played each other) Stanford, and Tennessee.
Seriously how many people voted for them.

How does CMU get 3 votes? somebody's got some 'splainin' to do...
August 7th, 2009 at 11:47 AM ^
Enough said! Plus they are returning about 10 guys back on defense which was awful last season and should improve. I think they could do it because their schedule has some teams that could move them up in the polls if they win.

Anyone else feel depressed over this?
I used to wait all of July and early August every year to see the preseason rankings to see where Michigan was and who was ahead of us. It was always something I looked forward to.
Now I kind of forgot that they even came out this early and didn't spend more than a minute looking at them.

well if you have nothing else to look forward to start looking forward to the daily videos on mgoblue at least until the season starts
but I agree with you. I used to always get pissed when SI ranked us somewhere in the middle teens in their college football preview issue. That all ended in 2007, when they had us preseason #6. Now I look at the polls with detached amusement. I am an optimist, though and believe we will be ranked again this year.

I wish someone would do a statistical analysis of pre and post season polls to see whether there is any correlation - at all. I am guessing the correlation in terms of teams on the list would be high, while in terms of where they are on the list would be laughable.
And that is one of the great things about college football - its unpredictability fosters extensive exercises in predicting, which people love to do.

Its impossible to figure out why some coaches vote for certain teams and not for others. I am just going with coaches will vote for teams to be in the Top 25 if it helps their case and makes their team look better.

is the most over-rated team according to this site of the past 25 years
Interesting, thanks. Overrating might = under-performing, but that would give credence to these polls. Which would be dumb.
My statement was clearly neutral except in reference to the pre-season coaches' poll. Whoever negged me, have the balls to explain why you either think these polls are worthwhile or whatever your idiosyncratic reasoning may be.

So you're telling me there's a chance... *YEAH!*

I counted 9 teams from the Big 10 that got a vote. We'd be tied with Minnesota for 8th place in the Big 10.
OSU - 1126 6th overall
PSU- 988 8th
Iowa- 257 21st
MSU- 136 27th
Ill - 38 35th
Wisc - 6 44th
NW - 5 46th
Minn 1 57th
Mich 1 57th
At least we got more points than Purdue and Indiana!

don't mean shit guys, My last season @ BGSU was meyer's first year there (yes i played for him, and yes he IS a dick) we were 104th in the preseason poll and we damn near finished in the top 25. IMO there shouldn't be any "official" polls until after week 4. there's no way to know how good a team is going to be until they've played a few games, and any team that starts out in the back of the pack in the preseason poll (ala utah) has no chance for serious consideration to play in the NC game.

I have to wonder if it was Mark Dantonio that gave us the one vote. LOL. If I was a voter in that poll I have to say I would have a hard time voting for us. Our last 2 season openers have not gone well for us. With the loss to Appy and then last years' opener which lead to a 3-9 season I think if I were voting for teams another team that had that recent history would probably not get my vote.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:48 PM ^
I'm all for us getting a vote, but I don't think we deserve it. Even if we do deserve it, don't get too excited because freakin troy has a vote.
I can't believe no one has figured this out yet... Rich Rod voted for his own team. Duh... :-)
about 6 other people have already said that.....
Why are Central Michigan and Troy listed in all capital letters?
August 13th, 2009 at 3:52 PM ^
Rich Rod came out and said it wasn't said it wasn't him. I would guess it could have been Ron English. Lord knows it wasn't Jim Harbaugh.
