CFB Risk Final - You Can't Have One Without the Other
It's Over, And We Left No Doubt About Who Are The Leaders and Best
Y'all did it. Nearly 1,500 of us went to battle last night and came out as decisive victors. When the dust settled, we had 71 territories to our name, while Ohio State had just 34.
More impressively, you helped us out-recruit Ohio State for the last turn. Their player count rose by over 200....ours rose by over 350! In fact, OSU's main recruiter (Westopher) was so impressed that he reached out to me and said...
"I just wanted to wish you a huge congratulations on pulling together the largest team in the game, and the largest sustained player base of all 3 games. Absolutely insane, you have my envy, and my respect."
For our efforts, MacGyver and I were awarded "Recruiters of the Year," but we would be nothing without y'all. Michigan's approach to recruiting has been different from the other big teams -- we rely on all of you to keep the community engaged and fighting. We don't have a single powerhouse recruiter. Instead, we believe that the power of our incredible community COMES from our incredible community. When you recruited a friend, it doubled your impact on the game, and that snowballed into a ridiculous advantage for us that lasted throughout.
I anticipate that more teams will try our approach in the future, but our success might just be The Michigan Difference. We will see.
All We Do Is Win, Win, Win
Despite the massive win, RNG didn't do us any favors last night. We came in at -8 vs. expected territories.
HOWEVER, we did get very lucky by taking each of Tuscaloosa, Starksville, and Tallahassee. We were underdogs in all three territories and only had a ~2.6% chance of winning all three. By nabbing them, though, we successfully "blacked out" the map -- meaning that we owned every territory in the game for at least one turn.
A few teams were trying for this achievement. For us to get it as a side victory in addition to our overall dominance is *chef's kiss*.
Krrsten on Twitch
BeerAg interviewed our fearless leader and Coach of the Year Krrsten on last night's Risk stream. I actually missed it, so I asked BeerAg for the clip, which he was kind enough to deliver last night.
So thanks to my forgetfulness, y'all can hear from Krrsten about how she got involved in Risk, what makes her a good General, her embracement of our freakishly large rogue army, and more.
In particular, she and BeerAg spent a lot of time discussing the ENORMOUS IMPACT of MGoBlog (thank you Seth!) and the contributions that each of you made to the winning effort. You can hear some of that at the 9:30 mark.
With all that said, thank you again for being part of this awesome victory. None of this would have been possible without you, the Wolverine Army. It was an honor serving with you.
Without further ado....
Muppet Time!
And you can't have one without the other.

Sing to the colors that float in the light;
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!
Yellow the stars as they ride through the night
And reel in a rollicking crew;
Yellow the field where ripens the grain
And yellow the moon on the harvest wain;
Hail!
Hail to the colors that float in the light
Hurrah for the Yellow and Blue!
Oh yeah, and . . .

I just wish the game could end in the same timeframe (or shorter) with one team having complete control over the entire map.
I get it, but that could take years.
Especially since defeated troops essentially respawn every turn.
Real Risk would have been over awhile ago.
I agree with you, but every team is a teleporting undead zombie army. No armies are lost, Risk rolls odds are not employed, and everyone can go anywhere on any day. If they reverse those three things, you could see one team get a big foothold and gain steam to control the entire board, but otherwise, we have to be happy with a thoroughly dominant win.

+1 for "It's Over..."

Isn't my thing, but applaud the persistence, enthusiasm, and the win.
Go Blue!

When do we get our rings?
I heard that Imjesayin is making the Championship Rings now, and they should be ready in like a week or two.
Imjesayin, please have mine delivered straight to the Schembechler Hall museum, thank you!

Can I continue not caring even after these daily posts are gone?
Huh. Given your recent posting history, you care more about the game than most people on the blog. Thanks for your continued support!
Your definition of "not caring" is...peculiar. You've written a short essay about how little you care.
Based on your history, it kinda seems like you have a negging fetish. I apologize that I will not be a source of endorphins for you for the foreseeable future.
Your ability to care or not is entirely within your own control. Nobody can make you not care more or less than you are already predisposed not to do.
Another thing entirely within your sphere of control is whether or not you choose to open and respond to these threads.
Nobody but you has any ability to control your level of care about these threads.
So...he could care less?
Given that he currently seems to care quite a bit, I'd say yes there is space below his current level of caring where he could potentially care less.
As someone else who hasn't been following the CFB Risk saga, I want to congratulate you on getting me to engage for the first time ever in a Risk thread to downvote your brittle, thin-skinned, whiny crybaby post.
You do realize that you have the ability to ignore an entire thread if its title indicates something that doesn't interest you, no? He did always title it CFB Risk ...
Kudos to you and MacGyver East Coast! It was a fun diversion and, most importantly, we won!!
Hail yes!
Hang the Banner!
Shout out to the technical team that built a new order website mid-game to support the strategy pivot. A great plan is nothing without the ability to execute, and we executed for an entire week before the rest of the game community understood something had changed. By then, it was too late to stop our momentum.
This cannot be overstated. To do what they did on the fly to get ~1400 users to distribute where they were needed was crucial.
100% of the credit for getting us moving on the "new" site (which was originally internally called the "Temporary Orders Site", believe it or not) belongs to u/dustinruns on Reddit (...I'd tag him here but I'm not sure what his MGo username is). He saw us struggling to get the OG orders site up and running -- we never did find someone who's an AWS console jockey to help us out -- and said "Hey, I've got this little proof-of-concept I made for an orders site in order to teach myself Flask..."
And the rest is history.
Thanks, dustin!
#TheMichiganDifference
This should definitely count towards the Directors Cup.
BTW - Grand Valley is the Stanford of DII, having won the Directors Cup 14 of the last 17 years and finishing 2nd those other 3 years. I wonder how much their club Dodgeball National Championships helped them?

hold on a minute. the NCAA called. east coast, it seems you and macgyver may have used some improper methods in recruiting such a large force. you're going to have to come down to central hall for an interview, and bring your brown jug receipts....
great job you two, and many others. i'll repost what i put in yesterday's thread:
For over a thousand years Roman conquerors returning from the wars enjoyed the honor of triumph, a tumultuous parade. In the procession came trumpeteers, musicians and strange animals from conquered territories, together with carts laden with treasure and captured armaments. The conquerors rode in a triumphal chariot, the dazed buckeyes walking in chains before him. Sometimes his children robed in white stood with him in the chariot or rode the trace horses. A slave stood behind the conqueror holding a golden crown and whispering in his ear a warning: that all glory is fleeting.”

This sounds like the sales manager I work with who immediately asks his sales team "That's great but what's next" when they announce a big new win.
"...memento mrrri..."

Our bag men treat recruits to Blimpyburger. Quints for everyone! NIL deals are pay-to-play for silly online games tangential to Sportsball.
I mail cheesesteaks to everybody. Wouldn't be hard for any two-bit investigator to follow the trail of soggy cheese wiz covered bread...
In other words, I think I'm safe from the NCAA.
My money was on provolone for you. Delassandro's, Geno's, Pat's, Tony Luke's or a secret place known only to locals?
Dalessandro's is my place. I actually know the owner, because I am friends with her daughter. Very nice Greek woman who is determined to feed everybody in the city.

Mmmm. Blimpy’s.
Do they give out little silver pants for second place?

Just remember, "There's two "o's" in Goose."
If we're all recruiters, I guess that makes me Matt Weiss.
I new someone was in my emails!
I really don’t know anything about this game or why it is even played, but I have enjoyed your updates and have been pleased to read of your successes. Well done!
If anyone is looking for a guide on how to behave on the internet, Wolverine 73 just wrote the book on it with one sentence. I'm just sayin'.
1973 was a good year, my freshman year at UM. I would guess that was your birth year.
March 14th, 2023 at 10:06 PM ^
'73 was a great year, other than getting f#ck$d over on the Rose Bowl vote. Still voted co-national champs on two of the ratings services. I know we don't count those, unlike the clowns an hour to the NW in East Landfill.
Being a freshman, and not understanding the effin' politics, I was pissed after the 10-10 tie with no bowl game.
