CFB Risk Day 41 - RNG is the WORST....We're Only Up By 40 Territories! (4 turns left)
BeerBatteredAg's Stream (https://www.twitch.tv/beerbatteredag)
I've become a semi-regular on this stream. BeerAg talks to various Risk players from different teams to get their thoughts on the game. I like to propose changes to the game (I'm a reformer at heart). You can catch me tomorrow at 9:30 PM ET.
CliffsNotes Instructions
(1) If you want an order aligned with Michigan’s current battle plan before you attack/defend, go to Michigan Risk Central Command. You'll (usually) get a few options to choose from.
(2) If you insist on doing your own thing, head over to CFB Risk and attack Ohio State south of the border. Talking Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii, etc.
#TheMichiganDifference - Overcoming RNG to Get It Done
We had poor RNG luck last night. We came out with 7.5 territories fewer than expected, while OSU won almost 7 MORE territories than expected (including some lucky rolls in the Caribbean). Basically, RNG swung last night's roll by 14 toward the Bucknuts.
And yet....we have 83 territories and OSU has just 44 territories. That's because blue is ALL. OVER. THE. MAP. Nobody is safe from us, and y'all give the Maize and Blue the firepower needed to make it work.
#TheMichiganDifference
So yeah, we're in a good spot, but we aren't in the clear. The Bucknuts are still a threat, and as long as they're a threat, we have to keep our foot firmly on the gas pedal. They could theoretically take two regions tonight (Mexico and the Caribbean), which would give them the star power needed to steal the win.
It goes without saying, but we cannot let that happen. We have to keep them in check to the final whistle. This game can swing very, very quickly (as we saw with the Anguses), so keep getting orders and putting in moves. We're almost done.
Also, do your best to recruit a couple friends. We have seen 1-stars win key territories time after time in the game. Every Star Matters.
Now then, let's take a look at this beautiful map....
Go Blue and Screw OSU!
Call your aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, nieces and nephews and help them play. Text, SnapFace or InstChat this handy recruiting poster. Hook 'em and Go Blue!
I missed something somewhere - why is the Longhorn maize?
After Texas was eliminated, a number of their players joined us as mercenaries with the sole purpose of destroying A&M. The maize longhorn is paying homage to their efforts.
Nice!
They’re doing a great job of that. TAMU was first in territories for awhile. Now, they are hardly noticeable on the map. Having allies is good.
OK, cool. Hook 'em.
One other place mercenaries (players from eliminated teams) can go is to Team Chaos. As Chaos power grows, it assumes increasing importance in the end game.
Ummm, where in the heck did texas a and m go? They were half the map a few turns ago. Can we do that to OSU instead please?
I have to say it's about time M leadership got out of their own way. Early on it looked like the plan was basically the same as last year. Stupid smart people at it again. At some point they seemed to understand the way to leverage superior numbers. Finally!
Fuck ‘em up!
Remind me again why OSU gets to keep playing when they clearly cheated with bots?
I asked the same thing and apparently it was an mgoblog poster trying to frame OSU. Pretty lame.
Because you shouldn't penalize 600 players who are following the rules for the action of 1?
I think that could be a wonderful philosophical debate. Could the risk of your peers being punished deter you from breaking the rules?
The evidence suggests that punishing everyone because of 1 person leads to a host of resentment and doesn't tend to be an effective deterrent.
Actually, it isn't philosophical at all, it's a matter of practical application. In small tightly connected groups, such as sports teams and the service, it works great. In larger organizations or groups where there is no required "teamwork" it works terribly.
Because it was a Michigan person -- one of the people posting these daily updates to MGoBoard, actually -- who was making those bots.
Was that proven? And if so, why weren’t we penalized?
It was proven.
He did it as a lone operator and the community decided Michigan shouldn't be punished for one bad apple that didn't actually have any control.
Serious question: While the bot attack was proven not to be OSU, didn't they have a bad actor creating Alt accounts? Or is that part of the bot attack?
They did in v2, but there's no concrete evidence to suggest that they did this time.
Their huge spike in players on one night this time around was the night of the bot attack. Did they also create alts? Who knows, but it would have been in addition to crg's "contribution."
The UM leaders were very transparent with the game about what they knew and when they knew it. They had also already banned the offender for other reasons before the latest proof came to light.
aTm down to 9 territories. So, angus, was it worth it to back stab the Wolverines?
i'm glad you all are playing, it's been fun to watch and encourage.
question: if we have 83 territories but no bonus multiplier, we have way less soldiers per territory or stars per territory than, say, ohio, right? and if so, then the RNG could have a pretty harsh whipsaw effect on us as can't defend what we have? we could easily get whacked tonight if folks don't play. so, play.
Yeah, this is correct. I expect a bit of a reduction in territory this roll due to the lost region. It shouldn't be bad tho, if you look at power/territory we are at the same level as Wisconsin and OSU. Tamu has 3x more power per territory as us tho so I expect there to be a correction there soon.
We may lose a bit but it won't be catastrophic imo.
We also actually have something we haven't had in ages: protected territories. Not a lot but it helps as we allocate stars that we don't have to defend all of our territories. And the incursion into Southern Mexico and the Caribbean has reduced OSU's number of protected territories materially, forcing them to thin their forces.

Prescient.
Got my first MVP last night and turned Lexington the correct shade of blue. My biggest Michigan related accomplishment since I ran a 4.68 forty there 34 years and 60 pounds ago.
Hey, what happened to A&M? I swear I saw them a minute ago, the Leaderboard says they have single digit territories, for some strange reason.
Transfer portal.
It's funny. As soon as our shotgun approach broke through their lines and took away their regional bonuses, they realized the handwriting on the wall and literally gave up. They no longer defend any territories and only attack where individuals want - no central orders or decisions being made any longer. They claim to have intentionally given the victory to us to screw OSU (who had started to attack them as well), but it's really more like they quit when they saw they could no longer win.
Okay, is it possible for Team Chaos be eliminated?
I got my second MVP yesterday - I saved Colorado Springs. :)
