CC: When is Hoke's next scheduled presser?

Submitted by michgoblue on
Does anyone know when hoke would next be scheduled to speak with the media in the ordinary course of things? If we were eligible for a bowl, I expect that there would be a Monday presser, as usual, but since the season is over, I have no idea as to the schedule. Also, as fodder for discussion, assuming that Hoke is really going to be fired, what is the likely timing re: lining up a replacement. I can see a few possibilities: 1. The Harbaugh scenario: Jim is almost certainly out in San Fran. The question is when. If he makes it through this week, he will likely make it for another week after that because a win on Sunday against Oakland is almost guaranteed. (For those who don't follow the nfl, Oakland is basically Hoke's 2014 offense pre-OSU combined with richrod's 2010 defense). However, the following week -12/16 - San Fran plays in Seattle, and should lose. If they do, I could see them firing Harbaugh at that point. Or, assuming that people behave like adults, I could see a situation in which Jim and the owner work out some buyout so that San Fran doesn't have to pay him the full 2015 salary under his contract provided that Jim does not go to another nfl, team for that season. Either way, he could be out shortly after 12/16. In this situation, assuming that off the record discussions have been occurring or will soon occur, I could see Hackett dragging out the hoke firing by a week to 10 days, and hiring harbaugh by late December (pre-Christmas) so that harbaugh has a week or so to get his staff together before the recruiting dead period ends. 2. The Miles scenario: Since LSU has finished their regular season, there is no reason that a potential Miles hire couldn't be announce at any time. I don't see miles refusing to leave before either the bell bowl or the taxslayer bowl. If miles is the likely guy, I expect hoke out by the end of this week and miles announced a week later. 3. Anyone else: too little info to predict, but hopefully within two weeks in order to try to salvage recruiting.

That doesn't really change anything. Of course the niners want to trade him for compensation. They have him under contract and want to get rid of him, so their choices are paying a buyout or getting draft picks in a trade. They'll take the picks.

If he wants to come ressurect Michigan, he'll still do that. We obviously don't have to abide by any NFL tampering policies in contacting him and they won't be able to initiate a trade until after our search will most likely be over anyways. If he wants to come to Michigan, he'll make that known before he could be traded. The niners' front office and management can't do anything to prevent him from coming back to college.

If there's no buyout to be paid when a college coach leaves to coach a high school team, then someone in the University of Michigan administration might be encouraging Brady Hoke to take the Muncie Central job.

The Muncie Central Bearcats are coming off a 4-6 season. While he wouldn't have as many as "115 sons" to care about if he took the Muncie Central job, he'd be close to his alma mater, Ball State University, where he enjoyed the greatest record of his head coaching career, 12-1 in 2008.

Nice idea on looking at the flight tracker. I'd starting watching the FlightAware sight for the UM plane (Tail #N582CJ) back when Brandon stepped down as a means to see where they might be looking for an AD. Interestingly enough, shortly after the Maryland loss the site posted the following message:

"This aircraft (N582CJ) is not available for public tracking per request from the owner/operator."

I can only speculate that, even a week before the OSU game, the back-channel conversations with coaches or agents were underway and they didn't want us knowing where.

Fair enough. I'm unfamiliar with NFL rules.

Still, the trade provides an alternative to outright dismissal, and I imagine we'd have more luck if Harbaugh were faced with outright dismissal. There's no indication at all that he wants to come.

He is literally the most clammed up head coach about his future....

Strongly disagree. The trade plays in our favor in numerous ways... it removes his sense of agency. If he wants to go to the Raiders and not leave his house but the 49ers are only willing to listen to trade offers from the Jets and Panthers, he can simply walk away to Michigan. Also, the trade route only opens up in February meaning he'd be in limbo for over a month, if he doesn't want to wait he can immediately come to Michigan.

This was covered in one of the threads yesterday, but Harbaugh was almost traded to the Browns last year.  According to an article on SI (I found it yesterday, but I'm too lazy to look for it this morning), Harbaugh nixed the deal.

Gruden was traded from the Raiders to the Buccaneers for (2) first rounders, (2) second rounders and $8M.

Doc Rivers was traded last year from the Celtics to the Clippers.

That literally changes nothing. If SF wants to get rid of Harbaugh they're going to get as much for him as possible. If he wants to come to Michigan, their trying to trade him is not going to stop him. Edit: UMross beat me to the same point and made it more articulately.

I personally don't think Harbaugh ends up here, but this is not why I feel that way. No team will trade draft picks for him without him signing an extension...and presumably if he wants to coach at michigan he will have that conversation and turn down the extension rendering the trade pretty pointless.

He was never going to get fired, he's too valuable a commodity and Baalke isn't going to just kick him to the curb for nothing. They can't trade him until well after the super bowl, well after the coaching search will be resolved, and he was going to have to use whatever buyout clause he has in his contract anyway. The trade rumors change nothing. If anything that fact that the rumored destinations would have him working under Reggie McKenzie or John Idzik make it less likely he stays in the pros.

Jon Gruden was traded for Draft Picks from Oakland to TB in 2001. He is the last NFL coach to be traded.

Interestingly, both Parcells and Belichek were involved in deals with the Patriots and Jets where draft picks were sent so that they could switch teams, though not technically a trade.

Its happened in baseball a couple of times, and Doc Rivers was traded to the Clips not too long ago.

Though he was not a coach--and therefore entirely OT--this reminds me that Ernie Harwell was the only announcer ever traded in ML baseball.  (In 1948 from the Georgia Crackers to Brooklyn for catcher Cliff Dapper).  Ernie substituted for Red Barber, who was hospitalized at the time with an ulcer.

In exchange for securing the rights to obtain Bill Belichick from the Jets after Belichick’s sudden resignation as the Jets’ head coach, the Patriots sent the 16th overall pick in the 2000 draft and fourth- and seventh-rounders in 2001 to the Jets for the rights to Belichick, a 2001 fifth-rounder, and a 2002 seventh-rounder.

Bill Barnwell at Grantland called the Belichick trade from the Jets to the Patriots "one of the greatest trades in NFL history." LINK

Harbaugh's probably gonna block any trade and refuse to sign an extension.  He wants to stick it to the 49ers and make sure they get no compensation for his departure.  They pissed him off, and that's something you just don't do.

So, no scheduled pressers with the media the next few days?

It would suck to trot him out for a Monday presser only to have another one shortly after that to announce he's fired.

It would also suck to be an assistant in a recruit's living room at the same time the coaching staff is being publically fired.

If he's gone, they need to announce it and not keep him and his staff twisting in the wind.
