Some UGA beat guy reported this morning that Richt wasn't interested in any head coaching position this year. Guess he was wrong.

Mark Richt, a world-class human being and excellent football coach at a program known for a loose application of discipline could either be the best thing that happened to that place since Howard Schnellenberger or a complete train wreck... either way I supposed I'm interested to see what happens.

of a certain segment of fans for two decades now. Meanwhile, they were killing people over drug deals in Gainesville, and doing women very dirty in Tallahassee. Payoffs for big hits have since been established as a thing at many schools, and the scholastic oversight issues extended to women's golf and cross-country, where no one is crying thug.

Just. . . always nice if we can fashion our perceptions around reality rather than what's being muttered by the fratboys. Miami is actually a tiny private school with a lot of wealthy. . . fratboys, and more highly rated academically than FSU, to take one example.

my kid to Disney World last August. Was wondering why plane tickets were so cheap, until we stepped out of the airport. Holy shit it is uncomfortable down there that time of year. Had fun, but won't go down there again that time of year.

I still think Mario Cristobal or Butch Davis would be a better choice, but Richt would be solid.  I think the U would probably get bored with him in five years, though.

My choice, if they consider Cristobal to not be ready, would be to have Davis with Cristobal as an "assistant head coach" and tacit "coach in waiting."  Davis could reinstate the "State of Miami" in recruiting and Cristobal could easily manage it with no drop in recruiting quailty when the transition is made.

Butch has left a trail of blatant rule violations at virtually every single stop. How can he possibly be considered for any job, much less a high level college coach, after he brought UNC as close to the edge as possible? I'm a UNC alum and followed them closely until Butch embarassed us all, only now, slowly, starting to root for UNC again. The guy is a swindler, crook, whatever term you want to use. College football is inherently a pretty dirty business, but he's second to none when it comes to cheating and impropriety.

He's my top choice for the Virginia job. Virginia is actually a higher ceiling job than Miss State with better facilities and better access to good recruiting regions and a much easier conference division.  It's not like the cupboard is bare either. Mike London recruited very well and next years team is loaded with upperclassman including a senior qb.   There is even a promising 3/4 star QB recruit in Corwin Cutler. London was basically Hoke in his solid recruiting but terrible player development and coaching ability. They can pay him..they already paid London 3.2 million/year.

Butch Davis is 64 years old and per his wiki page has not been a coach since 2010 - I dont see why Miami would go that route.

Richt is the easy home run hire due to him playing there and Lloyd Carr (minus NC) type success. I guess with Mullen you think maybe he might be a higher ceiling lower floor than Richt but that's a risk as he hasn't shown the ceiling with MSU but obviously that's a ridiculously hard division to showcase that.

If I were a Miami fan, I would be really "meh" about a Richt hire. Sure, he will probably have a floor of 7 to 8 wins. But his ceiling may not be much higher than that either. Plus he has been an HC for a long time now; how much real will to do what it takes to win at all does a guy like that have left?

Rutgers really needs to get Shiano if they can swing it. He is the only coach to do squat there in recent history and has strong name value. Sure he will probably be out the door in 2-3 years once he has rehabilitated his image, but RU would be in a better place.

Probably not the best thing for M and recruiting in NJ but great for Rutgers.

Obviously he's an alum, but he doesn't seem to fit Miami's MO of freewheeling, bad boys, do-some-blow-and-win-some-games style.  Maybe that's a good thing in their minds, but it's hard to picture Miami being run by a hard-nosed, by-the-book disciplinarian like Richt seems to be.

Richt strikes you as a hardnosed, disciplinarian? I thought that was Schiano...

Richt strikes me as the easy-going uncle, hence why the UGA coaching staff had problems with Pruitt being Harbaugh-lite down there rubbing everyone the wrong way.

My recollection is that Jesus was comfortable hanging around with Mary Magdalene.  So maybe Richt would see rubbing elbows with the Miami crowd as an evangelical opportunity.

Kidding aside, I think that Richt would be able to instill a culture of discipline in that program.  I tried really hard to dislike him at first (b/c of the Bowden pedigree I assumed he was a fraud vis-a-vis his values), but I've come to believe he is sincere in his beliefs.  I also don't recall too many Bulldog problem-cases while he was in Athens.

I wish the best for Richt.

you really don't hear about Georgia players having a ton of problems.  Richt seemed to run a decently tight ship at Georgia.  He just lost 2-4 games every season.  He did win the SEC twice, for what that is worth.  He should have an easier time of things at Miami.

Richt hasn't won SEC titles, but he's at least put up 9 and 10 win seasons with regularity over 15 years and has recruited well to keep the program stocked with talent.  Coker inherited probably the most talented roster in college football, and five years later was fired with a 7-6 record and a depleted roster.

I have to wonder whether Bo Pelini has just dropped off of everyone's radar.  Granted, he was only 5-6 at Youngstown State (still can't believe he went there!!!), but if he had stayed out of coaching for 1 year, he would have been a candidate for one of these open jobs, maybe not at the U, but at least at Maryland.

If he doesn't get this job, Miami is screwed. This is their Harbaugh [thats available]. You don't "give it to him if he wants it", you offer him whatever you can to get him there and "right the ship"... If Miami turns into what UGA has been for the last 4-5 years, they will be atop the ACC in no time. UGA's Achilles heel has been Bama. They've traded blows with Florida, South Carolina, but Bama CONSTANTLY has knocked them down. Richt to Miami. Make it happen, Miami.
