CC: Dan Mullen's MSU Bulldogs kicking butt again today

Come on, Brandon. We'll all chip in. We HAVE to make a run at this guy. What he's done at Mississippi St. in turning an SEC cellar dweller into arguably the best team in the nation is more impressive than what Dantonio did at Michigan State.

There are a ton of other schools where he can recruit better, will have access to more resources, and can make a ton more money. Aside from the fact that its Mississippi which isnt exactly an awesome place to live

On a serious note though Michigan can pay much more plus he could dominate in a weak big ten. Realistically speaking, miss st cannot keep up with bama auburn and lsu for long he might have a great season this year but its unrealistic he keeps this up. A few years ago some miss at fans wanted him fired after they went 5-7 go figure

I am not sure if the assumption that Michigan can pay him more is correct. Especially given the backlash against the athletic director who has payed coaches more and tried to earn the money to do that. I would bet the Mississippi state can pay him pretty well, and probably will after this season. He has a program now that is in contention for a national title in a conference where he will always be able to compete for a title. Given his success this year, he should have no problem pulling in recruits. I really see no reason for him to leave to go anywhere. We should probably focus elsewhere, though it never hurts to offer.

This is such a great question. I think that some of these hot coaches see what a fucking mess the M program is right now that they don't want any piece of it. They are so amazingly behind OSU and MSU is, unfortunately, slowing passing our program. Even though MSU has kicked M's butt lately, their program as a whole still isn't better. More recent success, sure, but that doesn't make it a better overall program. Another five years of this though, their program just might be considered better than ours.

Our team probably averages a full 'star' better ranking everywhere (4 vs 3) but they obviously arent performing at the level Miss St is. One could make a convincing argument that a decent coach could come in here and win big and quickly

Ok I'll bite. Cole (down the road), Ryan, Lewis, Peppers, F Clark, Funchess, Butt, Willie Henry, and R Glasgow I think are all reasonably likely to be drafted in some capacity. Then factor in freshmen/underclassmen who haven't played and there are a bunch of draftable guys on the roster. The problem isn't the individuals, it's more that the whole is much worse than you'd expect the sum of the parts to be

6 years at Mississippi state and they are competing for sec and national titles. No I don't want that at michigan in a weaker conference. I don't want the coach who knows the offense that has won national titles and produced heisman winning QBs.
He's winning at Mississippi state this is like competing for titles at Indiana.

I agree 100%. Personally, I was for RR getting another year. The problem was that the situation around him had become so toxic that it would've been all but impossible for him to turn it around here. He had a bunch of strikes against him from the get-go, and wasn't able to overcome them. I understand why he was fired, but I don't hold it against him. I'm glad he's doing well at Arizona and hope he continues to do so.

Uhhhh while I agree he's not coming, he's also not staying at Mississippi State. Rankings don't matter when $3M/yr can be $5M/yr and be at a bigger name program. But like most speculate, that will probably be Florida.

Why do people assume Florida is guaranteed to make a change? They are 3-1 with only a loss to Alabama. Sure, barely scraping by Tennessee isn't anything to write home about but they also beat a 5-1 Kentucky squad who has wins against Vanderbilt and South Carolina, which is still worth something. They can absolutely finish with 9-10 wins this year.

In equally relevant news, the coaches of the New England patriots, the Crimson Tide and the Philadelphia eagles are doing great things. We should TOTALLY make a run at those guys.

Note: not meant as snark to the OP. More generally directed at the number of OMG Mullen is a good coach and we should totally go for him posts lately. As of poaching the hottest young coach (currently) is that simple. Why would he come here, given our situation, over the number of other schools that will want him?

The "issues" people keep citing are not that great. As this season deteriorates the factions are going to learn the cost of internal division(if they haven't already).  Any new AD and/or coach will have the backing he needs.

His resume before this year was a whole bunch of 7-win seasons.  It's not unreasonable to want to wait a bit to see if he can take the team to the next level.  He apparently has, and I would definitely support him being the next coach here.  If you want to criticize people who, unlike most of this blog, aren't so reactionary as to make conclusions based on the current week, go for it.  I don't care.

Eh, it's one season following a ton of mediocrity. Realizing that that's really good for MSU, what Harbaugh did at Stanford is much more impressive to me. I'd prefer either Harbaugh or Miles before this guy, and maybe a few others (Art Briles, Gary Patterson, etc.)
