CC: Bob Stoops?

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on

Dan Wetzel suggests that Michigan should pursue Bob Stoops. Dan thinks that if Coach Stoops were going to leave OU, there would be no better time, and no better place than Michigan. While I would never say never, this appears about as likely as a Freaks and Geeks reunion show. Which now, come to think of it, begs the question why there isn't a Freaks and Geeks reunion show, but I digress.

talking while he's coaching the 49ers.  I want Harbaugh not because of the "michigan Man" bull shit, or the Bo disciple, or that his whole family is connected to this University.  I want Jim Harbaugh because he flat out wins everywhere he goes and he has a "fuck you" attitude and he would take no shit from the Drew Sharp's of the world or Mark whiney Dantonio and he would love nothing more than to run up the score and go for two when the game is already won down at the Horseshoe.

Harbaugh is the guy we want and the guy we need.  The only thing that matters is, does he want to come to Michigan.  Jim Hackett and whoever gets hired as the permanent AD will find that out.  If he wants to come back to Michigan, the Athletic Dept, Stephen J Ross and Al Glick and whatever other big donors Michigan has will find a way to satisfy his finanacial and logistical needs.

I cannot envision a scenario where the powers that be at Michigan don't sit down with Jim Harbaugh and offer him the job.  It's not an interview, it's an offer.

If Michigan doesn't score the right hire this time, it will a decade before this program sniffs 10 wins.  The last two hires have proven beyond all doubt that you offer the homerun the job and see if he bites and then move on if they say no.

There won't be another Brady Hoke hire, because if there is, there will be 25,000empty seats next September.  Try and recruit that!

I love Wetzel's article.  Stay tuned for next weeks column, where he reasons that the odds of banging Jennifer Lawrence aren't good, so he will try to bang Scarlett Johanssen instead.

The article fails a simple test.  Which is more likely at Michigan, Harbaugh or Stoops?  The answer is Harbaugh whether it's actually likely or not.

that Bob Stoops would come here.  He's untouchable at Oklahoma, and we're not a step up from them.  Why would he leave?

He's not going anywhere unless he decides he wants to coach in the NFL for some crazy reason.

He's been in Norman since 2000 and have turned the Sooners around after nearly a decade of dreadful football!

May be his looking for a new challenge and would like to coach another prestigious football program. If we miss on Jim Harbaugh and Stoops wants to coach here, I would sign him to a contract to be  our new coach!

Does not make sense for the guy. He is a living legend. Unless he replicates his success at OU, and does it soon, he's damaged his legacy. More likely he stays put, and has the same self-perpetuating program Michigan had for 38 years.

While I don't think Stoops is coming here I think Wetzel's point is interesting.  There have been rumors that OU fans are frustrated with what they see as disappointing seasons the last few years and I'm sure Stoops sees that as a being a bit ungrateful.  Wetzel seems to reiterate that it won't happen but it's worth UM's time to at least feel it out.  I doubt Stoops leaves but if things were to get stale or the fanbase chases him out then it seems plausible.  I know most of us would say we would take the last 14 years of OU football in a heartbeat and say "how could they be upset with his performance" but he has high expectations and has been a disappointing few years.

The only thing that gives this credibility is every other time a good coach left somewhere because of absurd fan pressure or excessively high expectations.
